Bacon Candy

The first time I heard about the combination of bacon and all things sweet, I totally balked. I mean, I love bacon and I love chocolate (who doesn’t?), but the thought of putting them together does not sit well with me. When Darice wrote about Chocolate Covered Bacon last year, though, I was almost convinced. Come to think of it, I was convinced. I just have not run across the product yet. Writing this post also reminds me of Bacon Flavored Lip Balm, which really does not entice me at all. But whatever floats your boat…

If you are into trying bacon in all its possible forms, then you will be delighted to hear about another concoction that is definitely not your ordinary sweet: Bacon Candy.

I suppose that seeing the label “Bacon Candy” is enough to tell you that the candy will taste like bacon. But if the product description is to be believed, it gives you more than the ordinary bacon flavor. While the sales pages does say that the candy is full of “meaty pig goodness”, the sweet part of candy is not forgotten. So what do you get from Bacon Candy? A sweet and smoky bacon flavor.

To be honest, I am not in a rush to try it out. Perhaps my taste is too conservative for this. Still, I wouldn’t mind giving a tin as a present to friends who have a sweet tooth and who can’t get enough of bacon as well.

Bacon Candy comes in a tin, measuring 3-1/4″ x 2-1/2″ x 2″ (8.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 5.1 cm). Each tin contains about twelve individually wrapped candies and costs $8.95. It is a little expensive, but you can’t find this candy in your neighborhood confectionary store, can you? And for what it’s worth, I think that the tin itself is worth the price. After eating up all that Bacon Candy, I am pretty sure you can find a lot of uses for the tin.

Bacon Explosion

It is a real holiday, albeit unofficial. International Bacon Day was created by a group of students from CU Boulder (Colorado) in 2004, and it is celebrated yearly on the Saturday before Labor Day in the United States. Obviously, these guys are hardcore bacon lovers. It is worth noting, though, that this love for bacon is also celebrated in other parts of the world. In the UK, Manchester to be exact, some students celebrate Bacon Day on January 14. This is a way of getting some comic relief before they take they exams. (I wish I had known about this when I was a student!)

So anyway, what can you do to celebrate International Bacon Day? It’s really a no brainer: eat as much bacon as you can! Now you have an excuse to indulge.

Just in case you are a vegetarian, and you will not touch bacon to save your life, you can still join in on the fun. International Bacon Day was meant to be enjoyed by everyone, so the founders of the holiday have made up rules that make it open for everyone. There is fake-con – soy bacon, for example. For those who eat meat but not pork, there is turkey bacon. Whatever floats your boat, as they say.

So as early as now, I suggest calling up your friends – or messaging them on Facebook or Google Plus or Twitter or whatever – and letting them know that you are throwing a bacon party tomorrow. I bet you’ll have the entire neighborhood wanting to join you!

I don’t know if you do celebrate this “Hallmark holiday”, but here is something I discovered over the weekend. I got the best Valentine’s gift ever – a web site about everyone’s favorite food: BACON! Dubbed Republic of Bacon, this site is all that bacon lovers need, really. I have to warn you though – do not visit if you will have problems getting your hand on some bacon. The moment I laid my eyes on the site, I had to get a plateful of crispy bacon goodness!

So what makes this site worth visiting aside from the fact that it is all about bacon? There is this post which is somehow about going against the flow of the practices of this saccharine holiday. Don’t get me wrong – I am totally for spending special time together with your partner and showing your appreciation for each other. I just hate it when you have to go from one restaurant to another when you’re dying for oysters simply because everyone and their mom has decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or evening for that matter).

These cards will make anyone smile – Valentine’s Day or not.  This first card does not need any explanation at all, does it?  Try telling your partner that he/she is > BACON and you’ll definitely see how much you will be appreciated!

Now I know for a fact that bacon will put me in a good mood anytime – especially after I keep failing at a level in Angry Birds. What better way to get revenge on those freaking pigs than to eat some bacon and relish every single bite?

Call it crazy, weird, even borderline sacrilegious, but I think that many of you will agree that SayUncle – the guy who originally shared the photo – is a genius for having come up with this set up.

Not much I can say about it, is there? Bacon and sausages – how can you go wrong? Now here’s the challenge: who can come up with better bacon-themed Christmas decor?

So far this is the best bacon food creation I have come across online. Bacon and chocolate is great, but bacon, chocolate and peanut butter is sublime. Maybe it is because lately I have taken a liking in eating sandwich meats with something sweet.

Only three weeks ago I had a chorizo sandwich with tomato jam, since then I have been adding tomato jam on all my meat sandwiches. The peanut butter and bacon combination sounds so appealing I’m contemplating getting both to try out a bacon and peanut butter sandwich.

The Peanut Butter Bacon Cups are made and sold by the New England Candy Co Esty shop.

This listing is for 2 giant cups. Each cup is a whopping 4″ across and weighs 6 oz, for a total of 12 oz of goodness.

They cost 12.99 dollars and ship in the U.S. only. The chocolate is standard made with milk chocolate but if you prefer dark chocolate you can request it special made. The shop has a 100% positive feedback so chances are big that you are going to love it.

Then the bacon is smothered in chocolate, two versions actually, dark chocolate and regular chocolate. Considering this is a very fatty delicacy I would go all the way and get the dark chocolate instead of the regular chocolate.

The chocolate covered bacon is made by California based Marini family, it is one of their newest products. As Joe Marini says:

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Who doesn’t love bacon?

And I totally agree with him, I’m do not have much of a sweet tooth but chocolate I like and I like them most combined with other flavors such as peanuts or coconut. Chocolate combined with bacon is something I have to try once.

For those of you who live in the U.S. you can just order some from their website, they ship with next or second day air. You’ll get a fresh batch of chocolate covered bacon that holds well for a couple of day stored in the fridge. Although I see no reason to store it in the fridge, I would eat it in one day.

You can order your batch on Marini’s website. Half a pound of dark or regular chocolate covered bacon costs 9 dollars and 1/4 lb costs 6.98 dollars.

This certainly beats bacon flavored lip balms by miles. I would give a word of caution if you want to try the chocolate covered bacon, I foresee it to be highly addicting.

Now bacon fanatics can try to get a unique bacon item for their bacon collection; a Kevin Bacon bust made out of bacon and bacon bits. The life sized sculpture of Kevin Bacon’s face was created to be auctioned off on Ebay for a charity cause.

Another surprising and unorthodox art piece, although can art be unorthodox? Art is art it can be as traditional or unusual as ones creativity can create. Even though the sculpture is made out of food it will last a long time as it has been lacquered for preservation. Do take note that this means that the bacon sculpture is not edible despite how appealing it might seam to take a bite out of Kevin Bacon’s face.

Tired from the plethora of fruit flavored lip balms? Now you can buy food flavored ones with Bacon flavor being the most notorious one to me. Other choices are pickle, corndog, nacho and wasabi. I really wonder how it would taste to wear those lip balms, like just having eaten? Or would it make you hungry?

Personally I don’t like flavored lip balms, with one exception, coconut flavored. It always reminds me of being on the beach, especially nice when it’s in the middle of winter. Otherwise I’m plain boring with lip balms using a plain non flavored one, so this Bacon Balm and the other food flavored ones look very daring to me.

I can see food flavored balm being an issue, especially if you are going to eat, unless you combine your food with the lip balms flavor. Easting sushi? Apply Wasabi lip balm. Having a taco? Apply Nacho lip balm. You get the gist. At least with the fruity flavored ones it is like dessert applying it after eating.

Any bacon fan should get the bacon flavored lip balm, myself included. Bacon is not the healthiest food and if this lip balm comes close in tasting like real bacon it can serve as a hold over for the days you don’t eat bacon. As long as it doesn’t make you want to eat more.

It’s time to talk about our favorite food again, bacon! I haven’t eaten bacon for almost a month and I’m starting to have strong cravings. It didn’t help matters much that I just found an infographic with seventeen facts about bacon, none of which I was aware of.

This infographic should be send to the butchers I frequent too, it has happened more then once that I have to explain them what kind of bacon I want. Now with the information of this infographic I can formulate it better to them.

I was not aware that the the kind of bacon’s where country related, sure I hear them mention Canadian bacon on TV but never really thought about it. Here in the Netherlands we have British bacon and a very thin sliced and small poor excuse version of American bacon which is called “ontbijtspek” which translated means, “breakfast bacon”.

When you order a BLT sandwich you have no idea which kind of bacon you are going to get nor if it is well baked. Last time in Amsterdam I went to a cafe for lunch an ordered their BLT sandwich and got lightly baked, mostly “raw” thick cut British bacon. Needless to say I did not eat it, that was 7 euro I’m never seeing again.

My favorite bacon is a crispy Oscar Mayer which sadly enough is not sold in the Netherlands. Luckily my regular lunch spot has a terrific BLT sandwich that keeps me happy. All BLT sandwiches I eat I compare to theirs.

Fact number five is also very interesting, 23% of men rank bacon as their favorite fragrance. Calvin Klein where is your bacon perfume for women?

They say love goes through a men stomach, I would say a BLT sandwich does. So ladies next time you have a guy over for dinner just make sure bacon is included. Although this counts for guys too having a lady over, I wouldn’t say no to bacon.

My love of food is not that deep that I would get a tattoo to show it, especially not of bacon. As much as I would like to, eating bacon everyday wouldn’t be good for me. Others seem to have a different idea, they went as far as getting a tattoo to show their love for bacon.

This one is my favorite, very realistic done and good artistic work. Most importantly it’s placed on the arm and not some weird place.

The graphic is very well done, but the place it’s on and the upside down cross is just plain weird. Note that I cropped the photo to remove the “crack” of the person if you know what I mean. Who wants to see bacon next to that.

The text says is all, “True Love”.

The drawing remembers me of cartoons from late 90′ early ’00. It does not make me want some bacon like the first two tattoos.

Now this a bacon related tattoo I could see myself getting. Classic done.

I guess this person has no problems at all with what too much bacon does to one’s heart. If I had that tattoo on me I wouldn’t be able to eat bacon anymore. Each bite you take you chew and think about the effects.

Bottom line is these people like bacon enough to show it with a tattoo. While I personally don’t like all the tattoos it does take guts to tattoo your favorite food on your body.

I was perusing Think Geek today to look for some cool items for the office, when I came upon these beauties: Bacon flavored envelopes. I don’t use a lot of envelopes around the office, mostly because I do everything online. But there are occasions when I have to send something via snail mail, and licking the envelope is always the worst part. That nasty gummy tast that comes with first contact, then the after taste that you have for the next three days making everything taste like gasoline on concrete. No thank you.

So what’s the damage? $8.99 for 25 envelopes, which in my case, might last two years. And if that means I’ve got two years without that nasty taste in my mouth, then it’s worth it. I wonder if they’re shipped in a bacon-flavored box. That would be awesome.

There’s not much to say about the game other than that it allows you to show off your bacon baking skills on your iPhone. And it’ll rip you off for $1.19. Dept. of Uselessness as far as I am concerned, not because we don’t like bacon here at FG. we love bacon, if used interestingly but this is just another stupid money costing app.

A guy has created a thermal lance, built out of bacon, to cut metal.

Bacon is fattening because it contains a lot of chemical energy tied up in its proteins, and especially in its fat. You can release that energy either by digesting it or by burning it with a healthy supply of oxygen. The challenge isn’t creating the heat; it’s engineering a bacon structure strong enough to withstand the stress of a 5,000F bacon plasma flame.
I used prosciutto (Italian for “expensive bacon”) because it is a superior engineering grade of meat. I wrapped slices of it into thin tubes and baked them overnight in a warm oven to drive off all the water. Then I bundled seven of those together, wrapped them in additional slices, and baked the bundle again until it was hard and dry.
