Over the past seven weeks I have been obsessively watching the new hit sitcom from CBS. No, it’s not about some pre-pubescent sexy girls, married couples or dysfunctional families — it’s actually about a bunch of nerds. The show is The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory is one of the most refreshing sitcoms to air on a mainstream network in years. There is a big gamble on the part of the network to come out with a sitcom that does not pander to the lowest common denominator, but instead goes for the intellectual in all of us. Where else can you find a sitcom that finds something hilarious about Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, the Turing Test, the time travel paradox and Stephen Hawking? Some jokes may actually fly off the heads of people who barely read but that’s also what makes the show so effective. The jokes do a great job of sorting out the true geeks in the audience. You are left with the feeling only the geekiest, nerdiest will be able to sit through The Big Bang Theory and that’s just how the geeks like it.
