The interest of Portal fans was piqued some time ago when talk of the board game Portal The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game went round. The wait is over – well, almost – as the board game was shown off at this year’s Gen Con., where the guys at Polygon got to play it. Envious much?
Portal The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game is the result of Cryptozoic Entertainment and Valve Software putting their heads together. It’s here, but not quite because it’s only available for pre-order. It does come with a perk – Portal 2.
Now, down to the details.
The game premise is simple. Sara Miguel of Cryptozoic explains:
“It’s a modular board game, and you’re basically trying to kill the other test subjects. You want to be the winner and you’ll do anything to get the cake.”
Sweet idea, isn’t it? You want the cake. You will do anything to get it. You’ll kill anyone who gets in your way.
Except that it’s not a straight line from point “you” to point “cake”.
There are three rows of test chambers where players have to move the test subjects on the board, taking turns. You get to high-five yourself when you are able to get the majority of the test subjects inside a chamber when it falls off the right side. At this point, the humans are “recycled” into cards (which gives you special moves, the use of Portal turrets, etc.) OR slices of the much-coveted cake.
Now all I know is I want cake. The more slices, the better.
While the board game is unique on its own, it will make Portal players feel right at home. You can pre-order your copy for $34.49 here.
