Regular readers will know what a fan I am of alternative clocks and watches. Any way of spicing up the chore of time-telling has to be a good thing.

I didn’t come up with this idea when I created five concept watch designs, but I wish I had.

Called OV’L, this wall clock displays both the date and time on a series of concentric circles. The inner four circles display year, month, day and weekday, while the outer circles display hours, minutes and seconds.

I’m not entirely clear whether this clock really exists or not. Designer Stefan Vasilev is into graphic and logo design, so this could just be a concept.

In any case, it looks great, and I’d be really happy to have this on my wall. It might even cut down on the amount of time I spend looking at time passing. After all, I’d actually have to work out the time by studying the dashes, rather than simply being able to glance up and see a regular clock face.

This kinetic energy clock is a bit of an investment, coming in at £350 ($500). 35cms (14 inches) in diameter and available in a range of colours, it represents three years work by Will Aspinall and Neil Lambeth.

It’s very easy to tell the time (at least to the nearest fifteen minutes). A single ball marks the time on a spiral index of the hours. As you’d expect, the markings get closer together towards the centre of the spiral. At 12 o’clock (midnight or midday) the ball drops down a channel at the back of the clock and begins again at the bottom.

The initial prototype was built out of beer cans and other scrap, and was a far cry from this polished product, which is hand built to order in London.

If you want one, you can order it from Aspiral Clocks.

The idea is that you attach the basic mechanism to the fridge door and then place various “activity” discs around to form the 12 hours of the day. In fact, you could probably use even less, as seen in the picture.

The concept is probably good for those who have a very regular schedule, but I don’t think it would work for me. Though I might get up at much the same time every day and make a coffee, I don’t need the fridge to tell me to do that. Plus, I don’t think I’ll be regularly (if ever) taking part in some of the activities depicted on the blue magnetic discs:

Make what you will of some of those. You could probably quite easily make your own activity discs too.

Where does the kit come from? We don’t know, sorry.

I love this marriage of concepts and materials — parts of an analog clock fused with original Atari 2600 video game cartridges.

Sadly, if you’re after the game itself you’ll be disappointed to hear that the innards have been removed to make way for the clock mechanism.

Plenty of titles on offer including Ms Pac Man, Pole Position, ET, Donkey Kong, Demons to Diamonds, Swordquest Earthworld, Casino and Asteroids. $20 each.

“CantAffordEmCrafts” will also try to help with requests if you have your own cartridge, though not all of them are easy to fit.

I have never been a morning person, and waking up before noon has always been a feat for me. While I have been waking up before half of the day is over for quite some time now, it does not mean that I like it or that I have gotten used to it. In fact, every now and then, I get these spells wherein no matter what I do, no matter how many alarms I set, I just CANNOT get out of bed. This has led me to think that I need to take some drastic measures.

Enter the Danger Bomb Clock.

This alarm clock is nothing like I have ever seen before. It seems that the traditional metallic ringing and clanging alarm clock has nothing on this one. You see, this alarm clock is a bomb – in a good way, that is. When you set it to a specific time, instead of emitting an irritating beeping or a nerve wracking ringing, the Danger Bomb Clock will EXPLODE! Well, make an explosive sound, at least. I am pretty sure that that kind of sound will be beyond irritating or nerve wracking – it should simply wake you up, yes?

What is cool is that you cannot turn it off by simple pressing a snooze or off button. It has three “codes,” which is randomly set when you indicate an alarm time. And you have to be able to choose one of these “codes” in order to diffuse the bomb. That means a little bit more of mental work, which may very well be what wakes you up.

All this for only $28 – a good investment if it will wake me up in time to do more work.
