Classic Comic Books Look Stunning as Stained Glass
Comic books are tremendous, classic comic books even more so. Comics still hold a soft spot in the hearts of many with films featuring comic book characters released seemingly every month, the recent conclusion of another Comic-Con, and new methods for sparking comic cravings. The books themselves (the good ones) are works of art, with one artist, Brandon Michael Barker, taking iconic comic book covers, envisioning them as art, using stained glass. Read more »
Assassin’s Creed Goes Multimedia
This week saw the release of two side projects to the Assassin’s Creed universe — one a monthly comic book, the other what appears to be a motion comic or possibly even an animated film or series. Of course, the game Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is mere days away from hitting store shelves, so the time is ripe for Ubisoft to expand its bestselling empire. Assassin’s Creed: The Fall is a comic book from Wildstorm, an arm of DC Comics. This 3-issue miniseries follows the story of a Russian Assassin named Nikolai Orelov. Unlike Altair and Ezio Auditore, Nikolai is not an ancestor of Desmond Miles. Instead, he’s the ancestor of Read more »
When Marvel Met TRON
What if the Marvel Universe was actually inside the computerized world of Tron? Marvel Comics has just released a set of 10 variant covers that show artists’ renderings of what some of Marvel’s top-tier heroes would look like inside Tron. I’ve never been a huge fan of variant covers, but these covers — by Marvel artists Mark Brooks and Brandon Peterson — are all kinds of cool. Awesome enough to make me wish Marvel would do a Tron-ized version of their universe. (Hey, they’ve already done Zombies, Apes, and Noir versions, so why not?) No doubt this is further evidence of Marvel’s ongoing assimilation into the Disney empire. Read more »
Why I gave up comic books
I love comics. I really do. I think it’s the most underrated of all art forms. Stories can be told in comics that can’t be told in any other medium, and that excites me. But a while back, after years of buying comics religiously every single week, I gave up on comics altogether. Here’s why. Read more »
Buy Your Capes Online
I grew up outside of Boston, Mass, and when I was little, we lived in this two-story house off of Pleasant Street. It wasn’t much, but it did have a cool patio on the second story, which was pretty neat to me at the time. I was pretty young when we lived in that house, and I was a huge fan of comic books. So my mother decided to get me these Underoos with Superman, Batman and Spider-Man on them. I’ve told this story before, but the end result was that I loved superheroes, and I’ve always wanted to become one. I caught this on Twitter today, and I’ve spent Read more »
Open Books Quicker With Lightsaber Bookends
Say what you will about Episodes I-III of the Star Wars series, one thing they did very well was the lightsabers. Right off the bat they were slicing through doors, turning robots into victims of a laser-formed ginsu knife, and let’s not even get started about Darth Maul’s double-sided piece of awesome. It was one of the neat things about those films. So what better way to keep all of that Star Trek fan fiction you’ve been writing in one place than with a pair of lightsaber bookends? That’s right, you too can have it appear like your books are the victim of a Sith lord’s lightsaber, all for just Read more »
