I don’t know if you remember Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, also known collectively as Zim & Zou, but some time last year, we showcased their very colorful papercraft gadgets. If you are not into pretty colors, you might not appreciate their work at first glance. However, the intricacy of the details of each papercraft gadget will certainly elicit a positive response from anyone.

The French designers are back, and this time, they have turned their attention to another thing that never fails to get my attention: the hamburger.

Zim & Zou have constructed a papercraft hamburger that will definitely turn heads. Their work is dubbed the “Future of Food” and is being featured as the cover for the magazine Icon. Gaze at this papercraft hamburger ensemble in full.

As I said, one can’t help but do a double take, if only because of the colors used. However, closer inspection will give you a better appreciation of the work and creativity that has gone into the papercraft hamburger. Here’s the future of food up close.

These Papercraft Gadget Replicas Will Make Your Eyes Pop Out!

What do you do on a rainy day when you find yourself on the brink of suicide because of boredom? I highly doubt that a lot of you would instantly say “work on some papercraft“, but after seeing this series of photographs, you just might be tempted to give the hobby a hand.

Zim & Zou is a French graphic design company composed of Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann. They have just released a new project called Back to Basics. Think of it as gadgets recreated using paper. Not just any gadget, mind you, but classic gadgets that will make many of us feel nostalgic. Oh, and this is not the boring kind of papercraft (I hated that in grade school) – take a look for yourself.

At first glance, all you may notice are the colors that my 3-year-old niece would love. Upon closer inspection, however, you will not fail to appreciate the work that went into each of these papercraft gadget replicas.

Speaking of cameras, don’t you feel a special affinity for the Polaroid? The last time I had an encounter with one was last year in Singapore when some promo girls for the F1 Night Race took our picture. That Polaroid was nowhere near as colorful as this, though.

The Sony Walkman was THE gadget back when I was a kid, and anyone who had it was cool. Now if Sony had produced Walkmans in these colors, I wonder if they could have sold even more?

Ahhh. This papercraft gadget replica brings me back to my high school days when the only mobile phone available was this brick of a Motorola. Our unit had more subdued shades, of course, but this replica still brings back those memories.

Saving the best of the papercraft gadget replicas for last…the good old 3 1/2″ floppy disk that contained a whopping 1.44MB of data. I think I had all possible colors of those disks, and actually, I only got rid of those stacks several years ago. I can see disks with this color sell rather easily.

Rubik's Cube fancy dress costume

What are you going to go to your next fancy dress party as? Historical or film characters are obvious choices. Game characters are the de facto standard for a budding geek, but actual toys surely take things a step further.

The great thing is that I could actually see myself being able to make this Rubik’s Cube costume. After all, what electronics/sound geek doesn’t have rolls of duct tape available, plus cardboard boxes from the latest Internet delivery?

Once you’ve sussed that, how about having a go at the 360. If you get peckish, make yourself a Rubik’s Cube sandwich.

Lemmings get the stuffed toy treatment

I didn’t think I’d spend much time writing about geeky stuffed toys, but I’ve already shown you the Star Trek meerkats and Plush Jobs, so perhaps it’s not so surprising that these woollen lemmings caught my eye.

Here you have walker, floater, blocker, builder and miner – no bomber to be seen, whaddya know.

This is definitely a DIY project. If you’re not up to making lemmings and their accessories, you’ll need to find someone who’s handier with a pair of knitting needles.

Meerkats boldly go… Star Trek knitted toys

I don’t usually rave about little stuffed toy animals, but I had to post this up because it’s cute and a little bit geeky all at the same time.

I love meerkats (I’ve even adopted one at London Zoo for the year), so this pair dressed up in Star Trek outfits just had to be shared.

Kirk is of course wearing gold, the original command colour. Spock is in Science blue. They wear Federation emblems proudly on their chests and have their ranking stripes on their sleeves. Spock (unusually for a meerkat) has those classic slanting eyebrows.

As with my non-trekkie meerkats, hind legs and tails are wired with pipe cleaners to allow them to self stand.

They’re unbelievably inexpensive, too, with the first one being £2 (about $3) and then others ordered at the same time just £1 (about 70 cents). I’d charge more, but there you go. They can even be knitted to request, including other key characters.

The Enterprise isn’t included, though.
