The Most Creative Way to Recycle an Old Boeing 747

The Most Creative Way to Recycle an Old Boeing 747

Where do airplanes go when they die? Do they have airplane heaven to look forward to? While most airplanes are dismantled and the separate parts are dealt with accordingly (scrap metal shops, recycling, etc.), here’s one airplane that has been re-purposed and turned into a house. Definitely not the kind of house you see everyday. Take another look at that, and tell me that it isn’t a beauty! The house uses parts of a decommissioned Boeing 747, with the guys of David Hertz Architects being the masterminds of the project. The house is located in Malibu, already one of the most strategic places in the area – strategic in terms Read more »

Whisky Power: Electricity of the Future?

Whisky Power: Electricity of the Future?

I’ve always maintained that whisky is good for mankind. It can not only soothe frazzled nerves, but it can also be used to disinfect wounds. Whisky can be used for cooking as well. I am sure you can add so much more to the uses of whisky, but try to beat this: it seems that whisky just might help with generating electrical power! Scotland is known for many things, but whisky is perhaps the number one thing that we think of when this country is mentioned. Now, the very same whisky that has helped put Scotland in the map is now going to power the country – electrically speaking. Basically, Read more »

Are You Ready for the Moss Invaders?

Are You Ready for the Moss Invaders?

All sorts of theories about alien beings invading the earth have been concocted over the years, and I am pretty sure that there has been at least one story written with moss as the invading life form. What Kimi Spencer and Marko Manriquez have created is not meant to cause fright and paranoia about aliens taking over our planet, though. The two have given urban art – a.k.a. graffiti – a different twist. Instead of spray paint and other “traditional” materials, Spencer and Manriquez are using moss to create a different kind of art, which was showcased at the ITP Winter Show 2010. The use of moss is not only Read more »

Tech helps to save energy at the Winter Olympics

Tech helps to save energy at the Winter Olympics

With all the excitement of the opening ceremony and on-piste sporting action, it’s easy to forget that the Vancouver Olympics was also touted as being one of the greenest on record. To help with that, a system called the Venue Energy Tracker has been devised to monitor how much electricity is being used to provide heat, light and power to the Olympic Village and main venues. The results are pretty impressive, too. In the first three days of the Games, a 20 per cent reduction in energy consumption has been marked thanks to sustainable practices. In total that’s around 66,000 kw/h saved so far, with a target of 18 gigawatt Read more »

Porsche Panamera Hybrid Variant Confirmed

Porsche Panamera Hybrid Variant Confirmed

The Porsche Panamera raised some eyebrows when it was launched this year. It’s quite singular really: a Porsche with four doors, and a sedan at that! It does cater to a different niche than your usual, run-of-the-mill Carrera or Boxster. However, it seems having a luxury sports sedan is not enough for this German marque. At the LA Auto Show, Porsche has confirmed that the previously-announced planned hybrid version of the Panamera is in the works. Porsche is likely to use the same technology from the hybrid Cayenne currently being developed. While the turbo version of the current Panamera runs on a 4WD drivetrain, the hybrid might have to drop Read more »

Downloading software: being green or just more convenient?

Downloading software: being green or just more convenient?

How do you obtain legal software? Do you go out to a local computer store and buy off the shelf, order it from an online retailer, direct from the vendor, or do you download it? According to a recent study (for Microsoft, no less) downloaded software is eight times more carbon efficient than its boxed equivalent. Some interesting UK-based statistics suggest that if the 16 million units of software sold last year had been downloaded instead, there’d be enough electricity saved to power 12,000 households for a year. Imagine what the stats in the US would be. Read more »

The Cleanest Gadgets On Earth

The Cleanest Gadgets On Earth

Remember the movie “As Good As It Gets?” In it, Jack Nicholson plays this eccentric guy who had a thing for cleanliness. I do not remember all the details of that movie but I sure remember his cupboard full of soap bars, which he would use to wash his hands. With the swine flu scare, I can just imagine a lot of people washing their hands more than they usually would. Anyhow, did you know that germs can be spread easily through gadgets that we use on a daily basis? Think about that keyboard you use at a public place (school children in libraries, for example). How about the phone Read more »

Show The Earth Some Geek Love With These Gadgets

Show The Earth Some Geek Love With These Gadgets

We just celebrated Earth Day a while back, and I don’t know about you but I was pretty much caught up in all the hype. I have to be honest about it – I am quite passionate about going green and I try my best to do my part. And when it comes to this, gadgets are no exempt in my opinion. I was doing some reading on the greenest gadgets there are and I came across a couple that I find particularly appealing. Read more »

Samsung Introduces “Blue Earth”

Samsung Introduces “Blue Earth”

You’ve heard the line “don’t leave your electronics out in the sun, specially in your car on a bright sunny day… otherwise, it’ll just “fry” up”.  With the recent announcement of Samsung‘s “Blue Earth” the line is now “make sure you leave your phone in the sun to charge up! :) It’s not a flip or fold-up phone… though it does look like it right? What’s great is that it’s a full touch phone… yup, following the bandwagon, but with the beautiful twist of “green” through and through.   Read more »

Make Biofuel From your Leftover Beer

Make Biofuel From your Leftover Beer

Reading the title of the entry, you wou would think ‘Why would I do that, I never have beer leftovers! And although I only very rarely drink beer I must agree with that. But the folks at E-Fuel claim that regular household sugar or even beer can generate lots of biofuel with their E-Fuel 100. For a staggering $9.995 (local tax credits may make the item more interesting). As a collaboration with a brewery in Sierra Nevada has shown, the E-Fuel 100 is more geared at companies than your average household. Read more »
