Gears of War 3 is Epic Games at its best. Having nothing to prove, their task this time out was to provide a satisfying finale to their blockbuster game series, and it shows. With all the pressure off — Gears 3 was a guaranteed success before it was even begun — Epic was able to execute the most confident release of their career. Read more »

Gears 3 Is Almost Here
What is the deal with these Gears of War trailers and all the weepy, mopey music? Who’s idea was this? The song in question in this new trailer is “Into Dust” by alt/rock band Mazzy Star, which Epic Games used to craft the latest — and likely final — trailer for Gears of War 3, which they’ve dubbed “Dust to Dust.” Read more »
To Spoil or Not to Spoil?
An early alpha build of Gears of War 3 leaked to Torrent sites in July, followed by in-game videos hitting YouTube and the like shortly thereafter that showed off key moments in the game. A new interview by Edge Magazine with executive producer Rod Fergusson finds Epic Games sticking it to those who would choose to ruin the experience for themselves. So I ask you… Are you one of them? More Game Companies Hacked
First, there was the PSN über-meltdown. Either an extremely evil person tried to get their hands on all those users’ credit card information, or some smart aleck thought it would be a good idea to teach Sony a lesson about security measures by obliterating their entire network. Afterwards, another arm of the company, Sony Online Entertainment, was also hacked, compromising the personal information of SOE’s 24.6 million users. (SOE was never taken down the way the PlayStation Network was, so it’s services never suffered an outage.) But that was only the beginning. Around mid-May, the website for Eidos Interactive (publisher of Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and others) was hacked, compromising Read more »
Gears of War 3 Goes Cinematic
Wow, talk about epic. In case you haven’t seen the new trailer for Gears of War 3 that includes tons of footage of its cutscenes and most cinematic boss battles, I’ve uploaded and embedded it for you here, in high-res. And it’s worth the look, even if you’re not a GoW fan. Read more »
Tech Demo Shows Off the Future of Gaming
Historically speaking, there have long been two titans in 3D video game engines: id and Unreal, with the latter being put to use in more games than any other engine available. id has been responsible for game engines such as the celebrated Quake II engine and the more recent Doom 3 engine. Their latest iteration is id Tech 5, and it’s being used to create the dynamic, post-apocalyptic world of Rage. Gears of War developer Epic Games is behind the Unreal engine, which has been used on dozens of games — everything from BioShock to Mass Effect. Epic’s latest version is Unreal 3, and last week at the Game Developers Conference Read more »
Gears of War Ends This Fall
Gears of War 3 marks the conclusion of the blockbuster video game trilogy, but exactly when it would arrive has been a source of much debate among players. Today Epic Games revealed to the world that the finale would arrive on Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 for Xbox 360. By the way Gearheads, I wouldn’t fret over the trilogy ending. It’s just the conclusion of this story. As Halo proved, series publisher Microsoft knows how to keep a franchise alive beyond its first storyline — especially when it sells gazillions of copies. I’m sure there will be plenty more Gears in our future. The third Gears of War is expected to break Read more »
‘Shadow Complex’ Dev Making iPhone/iPad Game
Remember that awesome Xbox Live Arcade game from last summer called Shadow Complex? It was a fantastic shooter that all but redefined the concept of side-scrolling. I was fortunate enough to be given an early preview of the game at Comic-Con last year, and then the good folks at Chair Entertainment, who built the game, even comped me with a review code to download the game. Sadly, the blog I was writing for went under shortly thereafter, and I never got to write my review of Shadow Complex. But it would have been glowing, I tell you. It was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I had all year Read more »
Unreal Engine Running on Apple Devices
At today’s Apple keynote event, Epic Games showed up to tease a new game they’re working on called Project Sword. Showing off some of the 3D gameplay the game will make possible, using Epic’s Unreal Engine (the same game engine used for Gears of War, Mass Effect, and more), they’ve made a free app available to download from iTunes. It’s called “Epic Citadel,” and it’s basically a FPS-style 3D castle/village environment for you to wander around in and take a look at what the Unreal engine can do on iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I just downloaded the iPad version and have to say, I’m impressed. The controls are simple and Read more »
