It’s officially called “The Non-American’s Guide to American Football”, but I think my title will do just as well. The Geek Guide to American Football. It sounds good, and after all, there might be one or two of you who have found themselves in the position that Leonard of The Big Bang Theoryfound himself many seasons ago. Remember that scene where he had his nose buried in a football for dummies book? Suddenly Sheldon jumps in with his football knowledge. You do not have to admit it publicly if you don’t know anything about American football. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I honestly don’t know much except for a bunch of well-padded guys running around and patting each other on the butt. But just in case you have a need to understand the game that is called American football, there is something that can save you. Or at least give you a working knowledge so you don’t look like Leonard. (No need to tell you NOT to wear an oversized football jersey, right?) Let me try to get this right and list the basics. Feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong.

There are two End Zones. They are found at the ends of the football field, which is 120 yards long. Who knows how long a yard is? The chart says 100 yards = 91. 4 meters.

Uprights. The word is uprights, not goals. I can see why they are called uprights, but it’s hard not to think of them as goals. After all, they are used for kicking field goals!

A touchdown is worth 6 points.

Okay that was lame. I really don’t get the “downs”, except that they stop playing. I guess I am just lucky that I do not have to learn American football by heart right now. It still is an interesting game, to be honest, and perhaps one of these days, I’ll get into it. Especially if the NBA lockout never ends. For you guys who can use a handy reference, here’s the guide to football, thanks to Reddit. You might even get good at NFL on the PS3 because of this!

Remember the list that NPR published earlier this year? Titled “Your Picks: Top 100 Science-Fiction, Fantasy Books“, the list has caught the attention of every science fiction and fantasy enthusiast in the planet. And then some.

If memory serves me correctly, there was even a question (or poll) going around on Facebook asking people to indicate how many of the books they have read. Or maybe that was another list.

In any case, NPR’s best fantasy and science fiction books list is quite impressive, and I have to admit that I have a long way to go – both in terms of science fiction and fantasy. I do, however, recognize a vast majority of the titles and authors, so much so that I have an idea as to what book I might be interested in or what book I should not even think about opening. Now if you are new to science fiction and fantasy or you are only now discovering the wonders of these genres, then you might have been a wee bit overwhelmed with the list that NPR released.

Don’t be embarrassed to admit it. A hundred books seemingly randomly presented with only a brief description – anyone would be confused where to start!

You can thank the guys at SF Signal instead. They have taken a humongous task upon themselves and came up with an awesome flowchart that serves as a guide to NPR’s best fantasy and science fiction books. The cool thing about the flowchart is that it does what a flowchart is supposed to do – guide you step by step so that you will eventually reach an endpoint, which in this case is deciding on which book to read. It starts with asking you whether you want to read a fantasy story or a science fiction story. What better place to start, yes? You can even find a book if you can’t make your mind up!

Here’s a peek – the chart is too big to be seen on this page, so please click for the full size.

Flowchart for NPR's Fantasy and Sci-Fi Book List

So tell me, which book is next on your reading list after seeing the flowchart for NPR’s best fantasy and science fiction books?

Don’t get me wrong – I love this series, but I have never denied the fact that every reading makes me depressed because all the “good” ones die. Even the “bad” ones with “good” sides die. They all die. Still, I think it’s merely a representation of real life – sooner or later we’ll all die, albeit not in such dramatic or grisly ways as George R.R. Martin’s characters do.

Anyhow, the season finale of HBO’s Game of Thrones is this weekend. Can you believe that? I need to catch up on the TV series, as I haven’t had time to watch!

Finale or not, in keeping with the GoT spirit, I found this flowchart which can predict your future – at least about the nature of your death (to a certain degree). If anything, the lines are amusing and they are based on the characters in the series. There aren’t any outright spoilers, but it still is rather easy to figure out which characters are referred to, so I suggest putting off reading the flowchart in detail until after you’ve watched the season finale. Of course, that’s only if you are bothered by spoilers.

Click to figure out those squiggly lines

My path was pretty straightforward and boring – from START to “War is easier than daughters. You may live yet, if you’re willing to get bloody.”

Oh, just in case you still haven’t been introduced to the show, here is the perfect guide to Game of Thrones.

The taboo around tattoos has diminished a lot the last past decade. It’s not looked down any more if you have one or two nice tattoos on a discreet place on your body. Now it’s a question of getting a tasteful tattoo somewhere not on your face or head rather then not getting one at all.

A year ago I got my first tattoo after thinking about it a year long, I wanted something really meaningful and be sure it wasn’t something I would regret later. I decided on a poem which I wanted on my shoulder, but at the ink shop I decided why put it somewhere where I can’t see it every time I want. So I had it inked on the my inner left arm and till today I like it very much.

Since venturing into the tattoo world I pay more attention to others their tattoos and I noticed I see more bad ones then good ones. They are obviously chosen without second thoughts and placed in spots that are not hidden by regular cloth. Not that they should be hidden, to each their choice but if it is a FAIL tattoo you’d be wishing it was under your clothes. Because lets admit it the taboo might be less but if you want a job which deals with high status you’ll need to cover up those tats.

The people of Houston tattoo removal have devised an excellent flowchart to help you decided to get a tattoo or not. And this is something you should definitely consult if you have yet to get a first tattoo.

I went through the flowchart with the tattoo I currently have on mind and passed the chart without a problem. I can safely say I made the right decision with getting my tattoo. But then again I don’t have stars all over my face or Tony Danzas face on my leg.

This fun flowchart sure made me think about which target group will be buying the iPad the most. iPhone became a mayor regular consumer product. Just like the iPod a lot of Windows user have an iPhone so I really wonder if Windows users will be buying the iPad in masses or choose for a Windows tablet.
