The French designers are back, and this time, they have turned their attention to another thing that never fails to get my attention: the hamburger.

Zim & Zou have constructed a papercraft hamburger that will definitely turn heads. Their work is dubbed the “Future of Food” and is being featured as the cover for the magazine Icon. Gaze at this papercraft hamburger ensemble in full.

I apologize upfront if some of you might get offended at some points which may be politically incorrect!

You know how there are some groups who think that eating meat is inhumane because of the way the animals are bred and killed? I honestly think that the arguments are not enough to sway me, and not only because I like my meat. Now torturing animals is another thing, but farm-bred animals meant for human consumption is another thing.

In any case, this is not a matter of ethics or political correctness. It is a story that boggles me as I write. If you think that McDonald’s is evil because they are “mean” to the cows they breed for the meat, but you like your hamburgers, then science might just have a solution for you in the near future: nothing less than petri dish hamburger.

The mere thought of eating meat that grows out of a lab dish is enough to disconcert me, but I am sure that if I think about it, many other things that I ingest will disconcert me as well.

Mark Post of the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands has come up with what could be a potential solution to the world’s humongous need for meat. He has been able to culture meat in the lab – in petri dishes, of course. He says that this could be a possible replacement method to provide for our need for meat, as opposed to having to breed and slaughter animals. The vascular biologist also points out other advantages such as conserving energy, land, and water, not to mention the positive effect on emissions.

Carnivores like me are probably already mentally retching. As much as I have tried to grow a liking for veggie meat and other similar substances, I just cannot come to terms with it. If this is your concern, Post says that his petri dish hamburger is way different from the fake meat that we have today. In fact, the petri dish hamburger product is just like real animal flesh. Now what doesn’t that make me feel better at all?

Then again, a Halloween party may be all hyped up because of the costumes that people put on, but one cannot forget the food and drinks served. If you are hosting your own Halloween party, it is imperative that you get this aspect just right in order to make your party a success.

Of course, if you want to be a stickler for details, you need to make the theme stick. For example, if you want to go Trekkie, serving Star Trek-themed drinks is a no-brainer. You can also buy some Romulan Ale to add to the ambiance. The latter can be a drain on your pocket, though.

There’s a decent number of butterbeer recipes which you can find here with the following results.

The base of butterbeer is cream soda. In fact, if you don’t have a sweet tooth, you can actually consider naked Cream Soda to be the light version of the drink. Together with the fizz of cream soda is butterscotch — or anything that emulates a butterscotch flavor. The more natural, the better of course. You can make it yourself.

The entire process of churning out a batch of butterbeer from scratch could take you roughly 40 minutes, but this involves mostly the wait of melting brown sugar in a large saucepan then combining the ingredients — together with the carbonated drink afterwards. Then of course there’s the option of serving it spiked with a bit of rhum to complement the caramel flavor, serving it ice blended, or serving as is, chilled.

Note that this drink is heavily laden with sugar and can really give you that all time high (and crash) that you may not want. A serving of cream soda contains over 120 calories and depending on your mixture, the butterscotch can contain 50 to 70 calories per serving. That’s nearly 200 calories for one serving of butterbeer.

But well, if you’re doing that 8-movie marathon in the next several years with your kids, having a real tankard of butterbeer can make family movie nights very pleasant.

DUDE. Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?

My family and friends and pretty much anyone I’ve ever had breakfast with — they all think I’m nuts. Because I can’t stand soggy cereal so much that I eat it differently than everyone else. Instead of doing the traditional thing where you pour your cereal into the bowl and then drench it in milk, I pour milk in my bowl first and then take the cereal box with me to the table. There, I pour cereal into the bowl a little at a time — just enough to cover the surface. Eat that, repeat. No cereal drowning at the bottom of the bowl means no soggy cereal.

Some entrepreneurial genius came up with an even better idea. They call it the Obol, and as you can see from the picture, it’s a bowl divided into two parts: one for the milk, one for the cereal. Not only is it divided, it has this ramp thing so that as you guide your spoon around the interior rim, you scoop up some cereal and then grab some milk to go with it on your way out. Like I said: genius!! Not only that, but the Obol also has a bottom that’s specially made so that it can be held in just one hand, with a little lip for your thumb to hold to easily.

The Obol company says you can use their special bowl for other foods, too, like soup and crackers, chips and salsa, or even cookies and milk. The one downside to the Obol is its price: a single bowl will run you $18.95 plus shipping. (There’s also a 3-pack available for $49.95.)

But you can’t put a price on cereal that never gets soggy.

Another great thing about food in fantasy stories is that you can actually make the dishes – or at least give it a try – in real life. Today. This is not a new concept. There are already people making a big deal out of feasting like hobbits.

The first episode of Game of Thrones may not have shown a lot of dishes that would make you slobber like an American shar-pei, but believe me, the entire (book) series is full of delectable dishes. Just hang in there and I am pretty sure we’ll get to see more food in the upcoming episodes.

In the meantime, you might want to check out this awesome blog called The Inn at the Crossroads. This is the blog of two women who are avid fans of George R.R. Martin and of, well, food. The inevitable has happened – food from the book series Song of Ice and Fire has become a reality, thanks to these two women.

The blog is relatively new but the gals have been busy in the kitchen, making medieval versions and modern versions of food from Westeros. The result? A load of photos and descriptions of dishes that will make your mouth water. Or not – depending on your preference in food. Medieval food, after all, is not something that appeals to everyone.

In case you are an ace in the kitchen, and you want to try something new (or old, depending on how you look at it), here are some of the tastier medieval dishes from the blog.

Let’s start with Winterfell, the setting for the first episode of the HBO series. This is what they typically have for breakfast. Description: “There was much more than she’d asked for: hot bread, butter and honey and blackberry preserves, a rasher of bacon and a soft-boiled egg, a wedge of cheese, a pot of mint tea. And with came Maester Luwin.” (I: 113)

Next up is a salad of green beans, onions, and beetroot. The ladies tried a medieval version and a modern version, the difference being that the broiling is employed in the latter, as opposed to boiling. Their choice: the modern version.

This one’s for those who like fish – trout wrapped in bacon. They got me at bacon.

The next three are for meat lovers.

What if you use the best milk in the world? Human breast milk, that is.

You may be gagging from the mere thought of eating ice cream made from human breast milk, but it seems that there is something to be said about this “new” product. As a matter of fact, I don’t think the use of human breast milk in adult food products is not that novel. This is, however, probably the first time that human breast milk is being used in commercially sold ice cream!

Founder Matt O’Connor is no less then enthusiastic about his “invention”, and he aims to let the world know just how great his Baby Gaga Ice Cream is. In spite of “selling points” such as the source being all natural and free-range, unsurprisingly, not everyone is buying the idea – that includes me!

The ice cream can be bought at 15 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom, WC2E 7NG – if you can find some space in your fridge, that is. Here’s a video plugging this exotic concoction.

I may not be able to say no to ice cream generally, but I think I shall pass up on this one.

Angry Birds.  Regardless of  the platform one chooses to play the game on, it’s addictive, fun, and as the number of downloads prove, immensely popular.

Angry Birds has spawned creative individuals to create breakfast based on the game, a branded board game, and so much more.

One individual has taken his love for the game to a wonderful new level, an Angry Birds birthday cake.  Not only that, the cake can also be played!

The cake above took a whopping 10 hours to create!

This super sweet is an:

“Interactive Angry Birds cake, playable with a real slingshot and, of course, made of chocolate, icing and so forth. It’s a cake made for a boy named Ben. It took 10 hours to make, and only 2 minutes to destroy.”

As you can see from the video, not only does the cake look delicious, but more so than that, looks like a tremendous amount of fun!  What a wonderful way to celebrate the birthday of one’s child!

Chocolate Skulls is the baby of Marina Malvada, who got started on the idea of skulls made out of chocolate way back in 1993. As with many noteworthy creations, the skulls were not really planned. What happened was that the artist was casting skulls, but of different material. It just entered her mind to create something edible, and what better to use than chocolate?

This year, Chocolate Skulls is entering a new phase – one which is set to give the project more exposure than ever. I think that the concept alone is enough to spread the word. These skulls are 100% edible and are cast from real human skulls. It is thus no surprise that people who have seen them in real life say that the candy – it is candy after all – is strikingly accurate, anatomically speaking.

The first skull is made of Cuban and Mexican Dark Chocolate. Now we all know that dark chocolate is healthy, so there isn’t anything you cannot like about this piece!

I have to admit the skulls do not look particularly appetizing (especially when you think about the molds that were used), but they are still nothing but awesome. And, they’re made of chocolate – how can they not be awesome?

Haruna’s Omelette (Is This a Zombie?)

Since this is what got me started on the idea, here’s Haruna’s omelette. While it wobbles around like a slime from an rpg and glows in the dark, it actually tastes unbelievably good (according to the characters).

Akiko’s Jam (Kanon 2006)

Glowy yellow foods reminded me of another item from the 2006 version of Kanon. Anyone who watched that will undoubtedly remember Akiko’s infamous jam and how anyone who eats it suddenly gets a little disorientated. If you haven’t seen it before, you can watch the jam scenes on Youtube.

Sanae’s Hyper Rainbow Bread (Clannad)

Of course, if I mention Akiko’s jam, there’s no way I could leave out Sanae’s bread from Clannad. Normally her bread just tastes bad, filled with strange things like octopus and rice crackers. When the bread is combined with Akiko’s jam, their effects are complimentary and it can knock a man out.

CC’s Pizza (Code Geass R2)

This thing has a crust made out of sausage rolls, and it has broccoli, beef, and some white chunks as toppings. It probably isn’t out of the ordinary for anyone actually living in Japan, but for someone who is used to pepperoni and cheese, this pizza seems really weird.

Misa’s Rock Hard Rice Balls (Kaichou wa Maid-sama)

Although rice balls are called that, they are actually supposed to be a triangular shape. Misa somehow compresses hers so much that it forms a perfect sphere and is so hard that it can crack a tooth. Did I also mention that her rice balls are salt flavour?

Tenma and Eri’s Stampeding Rice Balls (School Rumble)

Since we’re on the topic of rice balls, none can compare to the rice balls in School Rumble. Harima has the bad luck of tasting Eri’s rice balls, which is compared to having a stampede of horses in your mouth, as well as Tenma’s rice balls, which is like having stampeding mammoths in your mouth while a volcano is erupting. I’m amazed at how Tenma was able to maker her rice balls into perfect cubes. You can see Harima’s reaction here.

Nagi’s Detergent Porridge (Hayate The Combat Butler)

It’s reasonable for first-time cooks to mix up some ingredients, but mixing up cooking oil with dish washing detergent is probably something only Nagi could do. On top of that, she actually fed this detergent porridge to a sick person without even tasting it first.

Kana’s I Don’t Even… (Minami-ke)

Seriously, I have no clue what that is supposed to be.

Misato’s Curry Ramen (Evangelion)

Believe it or not, they actually made Misato’s mix of instant curry and instant ramen into a real product. If you don’t remember this particular food, watch episode 5 of Evangelion. I haven’t tried it myself, but this editor gave it a 2/5 so I’m guessing it tastes just as appealing as they make it out to be in the anime.

Suicidal Vegetables (Dai Mahou Touge)

Remind yourself of this scene the next time you toss some vegetables into the pot. After all, they did give their lives so that you could enjoy a delicious meal.

How do those little critters fit all that food and drink into their frames???

If you ask me, there is no other use for a burger than to fill up an empty stomach.  No matter how you do it, the fun part is in the EATING.  This guy disagrees with me, though.  He found a new – and probably healthier – use for burgers: painting material.

The video below shows how Phil Hansen got hold of a bunch of burger patties and used the grease from them to create his own version of da Vinci’s classic Mona Lisa.  I think the paper on the wall is wax paper?

Never mind that the video is part of a campaign by Arby’s and that it was launched more than a year ago. It’s still pretty cool to watch. Don’t blame me if the catchy song in the background keeps playing in your head long after you’ve watched the video, though.

Talk about a different kind of art. Now, who wants a burger – or two – for lunch?

I am in awe of these 3D pancakes. For a guy “just trying to make some cool pancakes for his daughter,” Jim (he only gives his first name) is a master, chronicling his daily adventures in pancake making on his blog, and I tip my lightsaber to him.

He also makes 2D pancakes that are quite impressive, such as this iPhone. But it’s the 3D ones that make me all kinds of giddy. I mean, have you ever seen pancakes that can stand up on their own before? Among Jim’s masterful creations: the dinosaur skeleton seen above, a crane, a ferris wheel, a biplane, a carousel, a volcano, a birdhouse, a campfire, a bridge, and even a toilet!

No one can argue that Jim doesn’t love his daughter, since he goes to this much trouble for her every morning. But am I the only one wondering what the heck his recipe is? I’ve made plenty of pancakes in my life and never have I come up with any that were what I’d consider “sturdy.” According to his blog, he overcooks them slightly, which give them more strength, and then uses uncooked batter as mortar to hold them together. He claims he even assembles them on the griddle!

If you have a designer kitchen interior this unibody cutting board would fit perfectly in it. I’m more of a this kitchen is being used daily and not for show but the board is made of wood and wood goes with most kitchen interior.

I’m constantly looking for reasons to buy another one and this unibody wood cutting board just might be it. Normally I use a plastic board to cut raw meat because it’s supposed to be more hygienic. A quick read on Wikipedia tells a different story that there is an actual doubt if plastic is more hygienic then wood. Considering bamboo has natural bacteria-fighting properties I would use that one for raw meat.

If I owned this unibody cutting board I would name it the iBoard which I would use in combination with my yet to be invented iKnife.

The board comes in two sizes, 13 inch(325 x 227 mm), 15 inch(364 x 249 mm) and 17 inch(393 x 267 mm). It’s made of oiled apple tree wood. If you are familiar with wood boards you know a good mineral oil needs to be applied a couple times a year to prevent the board from drying and cracking.

Currently the only price listed is 43 euros and the product is marked as currently not available depending on the designer. Well I hope he starts producing them soon because Christmas is only three months away.

Tired from the plethora of fruit flavored lip balms? Now you can buy food flavored ones with Bacon flavor being the most notorious one to me. Other choices are pickle, corndog, nacho and wasabi. I really wonder how it would taste to wear those lip balms, like just having eaten? Or would it make you hungry?

Personally I don’t like flavored lip balms, with one exception, coconut flavored. It always reminds me of being on the beach, especially nice when it’s in the middle of winter. Otherwise I’m plain boring with lip balms using a plain non flavored one, so this Bacon Balm and the other food flavored ones look very daring to me.

I can see food flavored balm being an issue, especially if you are going to eat, unless you combine your food with the lip balms flavor. Easting sushi? Apply Wasabi lip balm. Having a taco? Apply Nacho lip balm. You get the gist. At least with the fruity flavored ones it is like dessert applying it after eating.

Any bacon fan should get the bacon flavored lip balm, myself included. Bacon is not the healthiest food and if this lip balm comes close in tasting like real bacon it can serve as a hold over for the days you don’t eat bacon. As long as it doesn’t make you want to eat more.

Man, ThinkGeek has everything. Well, almost everything; I keep waiting for them to offer an Inception spinning top.

Starting today, they’re offering the ultimate in Ghostbusters merchandise: Stay Puft Marshmallows! According to the website, these are “gourmet marshmallows” that are “delicate and delicious” (which is how they justify the $20 price tag, I suppose). As an added bonus, in lieu of absolutely nothing, they’re also caffeinated. That’s right — in addition to satisfying your sugar fix and celebrating your mondo geekery, you can also get enough energy to go rampaging all over town, just like this sugary treat’s namesake.

And that’s not hyperbole. One tiny little Stay Puft Marshmallow contains more than 100mg of caffeine. (An 8.4oz can of Red Bull has only 80mg of caffeine.) Did I mention there are 16 marshmallows to a box?

Cooking for Geeks: Real Science, Great Hacks, and Good Food is for people who love good food but go beyond appreciating the finished product. If you’re the type who does not always follow recipes to the letter, then this book just might be the one you’ve been looking for. If you’re the kind who needs to know what happens – scientifically – when concocting your creations in the kitchen, then this book is definitely for you.

O’Reilly’s press release describes Potter’s masterpiece as:

My love of food is not that deep that I would get a tattoo to show it, especially not of bacon. As much as I would like to, eating bacon everyday wouldn’t be good for me. Others seem to have a different idea, they went as far as getting a tattoo to show their love for bacon.

This one is my favorite, very realistic done and good artistic work. Most importantly it’s placed on the arm and not some weird place.

The graphic is very well done, but the place it’s on and the upside down cross is just plain weird. Note that I cropped the photo to remove the “crack” of the person if you know what I mean. Who wants to see bacon next to that.

The drawing remembers me of cartoons from late 90′ early ’00. It does not make me want some bacon like the first two tattoos.

Now this a bacon related tattoo I could see myself getting. Classic done.

I guess this person has no problems at all with what too much bacon does to one’s heart. If I had that tattoo on me I wouldn’t be able to eat bacon anymore. Each bite you take you chew and think about the effects.

Bottom line is these people like bacon enough to show it with a tattoo. While I personally don’t like all the tattoos it does take guts to tattoo your favorite food on your body.

Ordering food at McDonalds was always a pain, they hire mostly teenagers to work there and they are droned to ask what you want for everything. I always know what I want, so I will start by saying which menu I want, which size, with which drink, which sauce and if it is to go or not. And 97% of the times they don’t listen and start asking everything I just told them.

So today when I saw those self ordering computers I went right away to one of them to place my order. I chose my menu, size, drink and sauce, paid with my bank card and got a receipt. Then I went to the pick up counter with my order number. There where two employers handling the counter and I saw they had a bit difficulty keeping up even though there was only three people standing there including me. But even so I was in and out of there in seven minutes.

There where also employers around the self ordering computers to help out. The interface is pretty simple and not unfamiliar considering the railway uses self service computers to buy tickets. But then there are always people who don’t find it easy to use.

A combination of counter ordering and self ordering could ease the upheaval during peak times. McDonalds exists for years, has the same food for years and yet you find people waiting till it’s their turn to start deciding what they want. I once had guy in front of me ask to see the difference between a medium and large fries.

McDonalds is the biggest fastfood franchise in the Netherlands and it’s always busy. Implementing a self ordering system is the best improvement I have seen so far here. Now if the supermarket in my neighborhood could start using a self check out service, that would save me time.

Over at the MIT Labs, the Fluid Interfaces Group is running a project that involves what they call Cornucopia, a “personal food factory” which is essentially a three-dimensional printer that brings together ingredients to produce food. The machine stores food in refrigerated canisters, and then when food is needed, the machine pipes in ingrediets, and heats or cools these as necessary. These are then deposited layer by layer until the desired output is achieved.

Cornucopia’s cooking process starts with an array of food canisters, which refrigerate and store a user’s favorite ingredients. These are piped into a mixer and extruder head that can accurately deposit elaborate combinations of food. While the deposition takes place, the food is heated or cooled by Cornucopia’s chamber or the heating and cooling tubes located on the printing head. This fabrication process not only allows for the creation of flavors and textures that would be completely unimaginable through other cooking techniques, but it also allows the user to have ultimate control over the origin, quality, nutritional value and taste of every meal.

I think the main advantage of this gadget is the precise control by which users can define how much they want to eat, in terms of nutrition content, and how one can create textures and flavors that might be difficult to achieve through traditional cooking techniques. Now that’s something that I think even celebrity chefs can’t do!
