Declutter: 6 Fun Recycled Cable Organizers for Real Geeks

Declutter: 6 Fun Recycled Cable Organizers for Real Geeks

There is nothing as annoying as a wire mess. While we have made strides as a society to eliminate wires in every way possible, from WiFi to clippy headsets, the problem still continues with many objects. Cable boxes, cell phone chargers, television sets, gaming consoles, computers and laptop stations, speakers – all of these things create a tangle of wires that are an eyesore. But you can declutter your house using recycled objects that are likely just laying around. Look at these six creative and fun ways that people have been able to reduce their unsightly wire tangles around the home. Read more »

“Get A Geek in Five Easy Lessons” – FAIL?

“Get A Geek in Five Easy Lessons” – FAIL?

Girls who want to “get” a geek, you might learn a thing or two from Leslie Sobon’s post at AMD – or NOT.  In her post, she outlines five “easy lessons” on how to bag one of them tech guys that you have been eyeing. Now you can just click on that link and get started on your lessons.  This could be the end of my post.  Then again, I don’t think I can just sit here and not say anything.  Now, don’t get me wrong – I could very well be one of the last ones to go all gung ho about feminism/sexism – but there is something about Read more »

A Geek's Frak List

A Geek's Frak List

I’ve always maintained that Facebook can help boost productivity, contrary to many companies’ policies.  Then again, not everyone works in a set up like the one we have here at FG.  Today, I ran across the site called Unclutterer, courtesy of a friend on Facebook.  The post that got me distracted all day is about lists of things that you won’t do again. You know how some people have bucket lists? Well, I’d like to call this the Geek Frak List – things that I will not do again in relation to gadgets, toys, and other geeky stuff.  I have been sitting here for hours thinking about items to put Read more »

Some "Useful" Venn Diagrams

Some "Useful" Venn Diagrams

Who doesn’t love Venn diagrams? They’ve always had a way of making concepts easier to understand. I suppose this is true for most visual learners. It seems that countless other people have found a better use for Venn diagrams – to make your work day more bearable. Take that diagram up there (via Next Round). It’s been making the rounds for some time now and I am not certain that it’s accurate, but it sure will take your mind off whatever’s bothering you! At the very least, you’ll be assessing your social aptitude (or ineptitude), obsessive tendencies, and intelligence. And, if you take any of that stuff seriously, then you Read more »

i5023: The Chinese Version Of The Big Bang Theory?

i5023: The Chinese Version Of The Big Bang Theory?

Do you remember that episode of The Big Bang Theory where the boys were playing with controlling their lights and then the some guys from Szechuan Province, China ended up controlling the lights in Sheldon’s apartment? (For reference, this is episode 9 of season 1: The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization.) The Chinese geeks were what came to mind when I found out about a group of four young men from Fudan University; and unlike the characters in the TV series, these guys are for real. Wang Xinyu, Xu Jian, Zhang Kan, and Lu Yuanda have become celebrities in their country and have even been dubbed as the “Chinese Big Bang Theory” guys. Read more »

Geek The Library Week

Geek The Library Week

I just realized how significant this week is. At the beginning of the week, I posted something about Pi Day (which, by the way, got a lot of mixed reactions; some thought it stupid while many others thought it cool). I just found out that this week, March 15-19 is also Geek The Library Week – at least in the United States. Geek The Library Week is basically an awareness campaign that aims to promote the local library. While there are people who totally get how important libraries are in education and self development, not everyone really gets involved. Indeed, in this age of instant information (via various media), hardly Read more »

Geeks: Women’s Secret Turn On

Geeks: Women’s Secret Turn On

Why it is a secret, I do not understand. Onepoll, an online market research company, recently conducted a survey to find out what women find attractive in men. While this is nothing new, the survey had a bit of a twist – the criteria focused on attractive features that women would NOT admit to under normal circumstances. Here’s the top 10 list: 1. Has facial stubble 2. Is a bit geeky 3. Has a hairy chest 4. Avid book reader 5. Cries at soppy film 6. Sings along to a song while dancing to it 7. Grey hair 8. Sweaty after workout 9. Wears glasses 10. Has a passion for Read more »

New Year’s Resolutions Of A Geek

New Year’s Resolutions Of A Geek

I think we’ve been programmed to come up with New Year’s resolutions. Even if deep inside, we know that we can change anytime of the year, we still find it more significant if we make these decisions at the beginning of a new year. Perhaps the timing matters for many of us. As I sit here contemplating the new year ahead of me – trying all the while not to dwell on the fact that it’s back to the grind tomorrow – I ran across some blog posts on “geeks’ resolutions.” Naturally, that got me thinking about my own list – another list, a “geekified” one, on top of my Read more »

Ban “Nerd” and “Geek” Says Professor

Ban “Nerd” and “Geek” Says Professor

Did you run across the New York Times article published on Sunday about “geeks” and “nerds?” Titled “New Programs Aim to Lure Young Into Digital Jobs,” the article talks about how we have to change our views of people who are into technology. While this is already happening, the article delves deeper and looks at education as a key factor. I actually found the article to be very informative and funny at the same time. A professor from Bennington College takes on a slightly different view, though. David Anderegg, a professor of psychology says that instead of trying to reinvent “geek” into “cool geek,” we should just stop using the Read more »
