There’s simply no more iconic movie car among geeks than Doc Brown and Marty McFly’s time-traveling, aluminum bodied sports car. Powered by nuclear plutonium and made to travel through time via the Flux Capacitor, it can drive on land, fly through the air, and even ride atop railroad tracks. Now that’s all-terrain.

Another iconic vehicle from the silver screen, the Ghostbusters-mobile was a dilapidated but tricked-out 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor commonly used as a hearse. Which I suppose is ironic, given that this one was used to fight the dead instead of carry them.

The old Ford Anglia fixed up by Arthur Weasley had very little to speak of in the beauty or gadgetry department, but it could fly and turn invisible when needed, thanks to magic. It even managed to develop a personality after an encounter with the Whomping Willow, when the forest near Hogwarts turned it wild.

(If you want to split hairs, KITT called the small screen home, but I could also point out that KITT, in various incarnations, has starred in several made-for-TV Knight Rider movies.) KITT is the quintessential 80s talking Trans Am — and he not only talked, he had attitude. He was loaded with gadgets for fighting bad guys, too. There have been numerous attempts to revive the franchise (did you see the 90s TV movie with a red KITT where the ‘Hoff put karate moves on a pre-X-Files Mitch Pileggi in a shopping mall? *shudder*), including two additional TV series and a perpetually in-development big-screen adaptation, but no KITT has ever outdone the original.

The live-action Speed Racer movie was rubbish, but the real-life realization of the cartoon Mach V was a thing of beautiful perfection. It came with some killer options too, including wheels that could turn 360 degrees. The movie’s later Mach VI was more “futuristic cool,” but there’s no comparison against this baby’s old-school sexy curves.

There have been so many Batmobiles, but none of them anywhere near as strong or frankly as believable as the Tumbler from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The love child of a Lamborghini and a Hummer, the Tumbler was billed as a military prototype, giving it a realistic justification for existing. It gets extra credit for being able to transform into the Batpod motorcycle when it’s damaged beyond repair.

V-8 Interceptor

It sucked to be a post-apocalyptic gang member when you saw this “Pursuit Special” headed your way. The V-8 Interceptor was an instrument of vengeance for former cop Max Rockatansky, who set out on a campaign of blood against the gang that killed his wife and child. It didn’t have a ton of options, but it compensated with a killer reputation.

Have you ever heard of Tee Fury? It’s this nifty website where every day, they make one new t-shirt available for just 24 hours or until it sells out. All shirts are sold for $10 (+ shipping), and they never make that same t-shirt again. Their designs come mostly from members of their forum, who create the artwork, and Tee Fury then pays the designer $1 for every shirt they sell.

Basically, they profit off of your fear of missing out on something good.

Their designs are always geektastic, but as a geek of 80s, today’s design really captured my attention. The designer, “nganci,” combined Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1 with Transformers, the Batmobile, the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the turtle van driven by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the A-Team’s signature black van, and KITT from Knight Rider. The result is this awesome homage to the unforgettable cartoon and movie vehicles from the 80s.

They’ve got sizes available ranging from Small to 2X. Get yours now, but hurry: tonight at midnight they’ll be gone forever.

We’ve all heard those platitudes. If you live with your parents, then you probably still hear them on a daily basis. If you struggle with breakfast, I am totally with you. It is difficult to get up in the morning – even more difficult to chow down breakfast when you are barely awake.

Your best bet? Some cereal. To add a little more motivation, throw in some of these cereal box designs by Ian Glaubinger. This prolific artist has a lot of work in his portfolio, but it’s the cereal box art series that holds my attention right now. Take a look.

I have never seen Gremlins – unthinkable, but I don’t do horror films. Even 80s horror comedy films. I would not mind seeing this creature in my cereal box, though. It’s not that scary. :P

The Ghostbusters is something else. Who wouldn’t want a view of the guys and slimer while waking up and chomping down some crunchy cereal semi-soaked in milk? The only thing missing? Ecto-1!

I can imagine many a child (or child-at-heart) staring at this cereal box design trying to get rid of the cobwebs of sleep. If 1.21 Jiggawatts can give me time travel powers, get me 10 of these Back to the Future cereal boxes!

Let me diverge. I also read that the supermarket chain Asda will be putting some art and literature into their own cereal boxes. No Ghostbusters or Gremlins, but something that also delights me – excerpts from the works of child lit author Roald Dahl. Think The Witches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. No designs have been released, but this is something to look out for. I wouldn’t mind seeing something along the lines of this image, together with the excerpts.

Angry Birds Augmented Reality Game – on a Cereal Box!

Since we’re on the topic of cereal boxes, here’s one more: Angry Birds, no less. The latest installation in the Angry Birds game franchise has already been made into a movie, and apparently, it also made it to cereal box history. All you need is the cereal box (with pertinent parts cut out), a web cam, a computer, and the Internet. The video below shows how the augmented reality game works.

With all this talk about cereal boxes, I can just imagine Sheldon having a blast arranging these boxes alphabetically. Or not.

Mizterzumbi recently showcased his LEGO-building skills that will make your jaw drop. He worked on the iconic Ecto-1, no less.

You can’t deny that this LEGO model is brilliant. I may be wrong, but it looks even cooler than the original in a way.

Now, don’t get me wrong, but there has got to be something about pink Cadillacs, right? Mizterzumbi thinks so, as well, and he created one in LEGO. Admittedly, he “cheated” by spray painting each of the bricks. He says “this thing is only possible in white if you want to be legal” and one can’t blame him for trying. No, I don’t have a thing for pink, but this car is still something to behold.

Remember that scene near the beginning of Ghostbusters? Peter Venkman’s eyes lit up at the moneymaking possibilities opening up to him and his friends after their first successful encounter with a ghost. It seems like an oddly prescient comment considering the video game franchise, which is taking a turn away from those original actors toward a whole new four-person crew. In the new Sanctum of Slime video game, a new, inexperienced team takes over for the team from the films.

And yet, the more things change, the more they stay the same. This “new” crew has fresh faces, but their bios sound awfully familiar. You can tell the game’s developers designed these new characters to fill the group’s pre-established roles. (And I assume we’re meant to get to know them because they’ll probably be the “stars” of future Ghostbusters games.) Atari‘s supplied concept art and details for each one, so take a look and let me know what you think.

Alan Crendall is the crew’s level-headed workhorse, steady but fast-thinking, who always has his team members’ backs. Functions as their de facto leader when a plan is needed in a hurry. I always thought of Venkman as the original team’s leader, but this Crendall guy’s description sounds more like the blue-collar Winston Zeddemore.

Samuel Hazer is the happy-go-lucky scientist of the group, aka the new Ray Stantz. Unlike other members of the team, he has some experience as a student of the paranormal — knowledge that comes in handy in the field.

Bridget Gibbons is the token “tough chick,” the wisecracking female who spends most of her time poking fun at others, but becomes all business when it’s go time. Yep, she’s a female Peter Venkman.

Gabriel Sitter is the team’s resident egghead, a technical genius who’s always looking to develop new technologies that the Ghostbusters can use in their work. Might as well be a clone of Egon Spengler.

It was inevitable that future games in the Ghostbusters franchise would have to move away from the original crew — because wrangling those four actors and their schedules for any sort of project probably requires an act of God — but I sure wish the devs had chosen to inject some creativity and new blood into the franchise.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime will hit Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PCs everywhere on March 23rd.

Now, comic veterans like us are quite used to the Transformers mingling with the G.I. Joes. Yet in a stroke of genius (and marketing of course, but I’ll ignore that for now), Dan Abnett and the folks at IDW have thrown in the original Star Trek crew, and the Ghostbusters!

Bizarre crossovers are the pinnacle of the art of crossovers. If you have never read the Superman and Bugs Bunny mini-series from 2000, then I highly recommend it. The beauty of this is that the whole story actually makes sense, in the context of both sets of characters.

And thus it appears to be the same in Infestation. The story begins in the world of the Covert Vampiric Operations, dealing with an experimental portal to the world of Zombies Vs Robots. I haven’t read C.V.O. before, but I will be sure to dig out the back issues. (So that marketing I wasn’t talking about sure worked!) In an excellent set-up that demonstrates just why and how a multitude of zombies can be acting on an agenda, the end of the issue sends the hungry mob out into the four other universes.

So, it appears we are not going to see Spock baffled by the antics of Slimer, or Optimus Prime dealing with Venkman, Stantz or Spengler, but this makes for a coherent tale. Of course, we have yet to see what the final bookend issue will offer, but I wait with baited breath.

In order not to turn this column into the Dan Abnett fan club, I will state that this motivating force that makes sense is very reminescent of the Hunger Plague of the Marvel Zombies, Then again, hey! If it works…..

Sanctum of Slime is a follow-up to the original Ghostbusters video game, which was a 3D shooter. An expensive game to produce, it featured a story by the films’ writers, the likenesses and voices of the original cast, and top-notch production values. Sanctum of Slime was far less costly to produce, with an entirely new perspective and a new team of ‘Busters who take over for the original crew. Just like the original, you’ll play as a rookie alongside your AI teammates (or with three buddies in the co-op mode).

The story finds New York City beset by “a disaster of ghoulish proportions,” with dozens of indoor and outdoor environments where you’ll take on waves of ghostly enemies. Check out the new trailer below that shows off some of these new environments. Weapons players will use this time include the standard Proton Pack as well as the Plasma Inductor and the Fermion Shock. You’ll also get to pilot a new version of the Ghostbuster’s signature ride, which this time is said to be an all-terrain vehicle.

Atari says it is committed to continuing the Ghostbusters franchise with more games to come, but whether they’ll be this sort of top-down game or an entirely different kind of experience. Sanctum of Slime has been created by developer Behavior Studios.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is the name of the next entry in the Ghostbusters video game franchise. Ghostbusters: The Video Game (man, I still need to play that one sometime…) was enough of a hit that Atari and Sony are planning a pseudo-sequel.

It’s not a traditional sequel, because where the first game was an off-the-shelf third-person adventure, Sanctum of Slime takes a top-down view (similar to Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light), and it’s not selling in stores. Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Atari.com will be selling the game for consoles and PC.

As developed by creative studio Behavior Studios, this new game finds you taking on the role once again of the “rookie” Ghostbuster that debuted in the first game, and fighting a major new paranormal threat to New York City. The downside: the original four Ghostbusters will not be part of this (or presumably, any future) game. Instead, Sanctum of Slime offers players the chance to team up with local or online co-op for up to four players. Atari also promises big boss battles and even a new Ghostbusters SUV/jeep for players to drive.

Man, ThinkGeek has everything. Well, almost everything; I keep waiting for them to offer an Inception spinning top.

Starting today, they’re offering the ultimate in Ghostbusters merchandise: Stay Puft Marshmallows! According to the website, these are “gourmet marshmallows” that are “delicate and delicious” (which is how they justify the $20 price tag, I suppose). As an added bonus, in lieu of absolutely nothing, they’re also caffeinated. That’s right — in addition to satisfying your sugar fix and celebrating your mondo geekery, you can also get enough energy to go rampaging all over town, just like this sugary treat’s namesake.

And that’s not hyperbole. One tiny little Stay Puft Marshmallow contains more than 100mg of caffeine. (An 8.4oz can of Red Bull has only 80mg of caffeine.) Did I mention there are 16 marshmallows to a box?

Being a child from the 80′s I associate these movies with my childhood. As kid I loved watching Ghostbuster and Goonies on TV and being happy when I was finally allowed to watch the Gremlins. Not only do I remember all these movies, I watched them dubbed in Spanish, it doesn’t get more cult than that.

The first three pieces would make some awesome posters. The last piece on Ghostbusters has a total Merry Melodies vibe to it, love it!

I’m really surprised I haven’t seen this idea put into play before, 80s Tees is featuring a Ghostbusters Proton Pack Backback that offers the design of the real proton pack with detachable storage features.

The backpack is fully licensed which means the Proton Pack looks exactly like the one we’ve seen in countless cartoon and movie releases.

You’ll also notice that the proton gun features a string, which allows the gun to be detached, while still holding smaller items such as pens, pencils and ghosts…okay not ghosts.

Here are several pictures featuring different angles of the backpack and detached gun.

The item is currently listed as “New Item…Coming Soon” and with a relatively cheap cost of just $40 you might want to grab one while there still available.

The idea of doing fan art parodying some of my favorite characters and stars in such a fun and simple style got me hooked immediately. Some of these guys and gals have appeared on the Simpsons and I could just work from that, but most I had to do from scratch.

The results often are amazing and last week’s Ghostbusters week was very cool.
