Awesome Halloween Get Ups

So Halloween is over and done with, and I have read/heard a handful of people breathe a sigh of relief because of this. For those of you who cannot get enough of Halloween, though, here is one last post for this year. I don’t know about you, but I get a kick out of seeing photos of awesome Halloween costumes/makeup. The creativity and patience of these people deserve to be hailed and documented, don’t you think?

Game of Thrones Costumes

With Game of Thrones being the most popular fantasy series these days, it was inevitable that people would go as one of the many characters in the story. Over at the Game of Thrones Facebook page, you can see some of the user submitted photos. I have chosen the three that I like most.

First up is Samwell Tarly. How can you not love that costume?

As I expected, the most common costume from the series was Khal Drogo. Throw in the Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen, and you have got a winner.

I like how the bloody detail was added. I think, though, that even riding solo, this guy got Drogo quite well – except that he is smiling in a way I cannot imagine Drogo would do.

Carolina Ghostbusters

I don’t know about you, but the Ghostbusters may be old, but they will always be a hit Halloween costume for me. The way this couple made their ensemble deserves kudos! More photos with details here.

Bender

As the guy who posted this on Reddit said, this is his Bender costume, and he “riveted” it! I don’t see any rivets on the costume, but you can’t deny that’s a cool costume – beer in hand included.

This baby is so adorable in its Reddit Alien Costume, complete with the upvote sign. I am pretty sure he will not resent his parents for this photo.

This one is anything but cute, though, but I think that the parents might very well be the coolest on earth!

Zombie Kid

This kid is “dressed up” very nicely and will fit in very nicely on the set of the Walking Dead! Check out the rest of the zombie kid’s photos and be amazed!

This costume I am particularly proud of because a childhood friend of mine made it for her son. So did someone order dinner for Halloween? It is served.

I would say that Heidi Klum’s costume takes the cake except that she probably has had a lot of help and resources coming up with this, so all the others in this list may have a slight disadvantage already. Still, this is jaw dropping, eye popping, breath catching – and all the -ings you can think of!

Get Your Halloween Spirit On!

Are you feeling the Halloween spirit yet? In case you have not heard, we’re running a contest where you can win a Star Wars costume – perfect for the Halloween parties already on your list!

Then again, a Halloween party may be all hyped up because of the costumes that people put on, but one cannot forget the food and drinks served. If you are hosting your own Halloween party, it is imperative that you get this aspect just right in order to make your party a success.

Of course, if you want to be a stickler for details, you need to make the theme stick. For example, if you want to go Trekkie, serving Star Trek-themed drinks is a no-brainer. You can also buy some Romulan Ale to add to the ambiance. The latter can be a drain on your pocket, though.

Here’s an easier alternative that will still rack points up for you in terms of effort, courtesy of recipe search engine Recipe Finder. Why not look at general Halloween-themed food that will elicit compliments from guests and satisfy their appetites as well?

Owl Cupcakes

Planking is old, but I am sure you still remember it. And you probably still remember owling – not to mention batmanning. Forget about all that silly stuff for Halloween. These owl cupcakes will make you cooler than any activity that shows off nothing but nonsense. I think they were meant to be for children, but we all love cupcakes, don’t we?

Well, they look like fingers that have been cut off from the hand – zombie hands, even – but they are cookies, and yes, they can be eaten. Imagine just how much fun your Halloween party will be with people walking around like zombies and munching fingers at the same time. Oh, and these severed fingers cookies do not seem too difficult to make!

If you are planning on serving more than just finger food, then you might as well go for something filling, albeit a little messier. Gory-looking Halloween rice certainly fits the bill, doesn’t it?

Personally, I suggest making it easy on yourself and serving only snacks and other easy-to-eat food. If they look as cool as these Halloween Butterfinger Eyes, your reputation will be made.

Halloween Costume Idea: QR Code Costume

Halloween is drawing rather near, and for those of you who celebrate this holiday in a big way, your costume is probably already on your mind. If you are still looking at options, here is one thing that can be a source of inspiration: a QR code costume.

Sure, QR codes are nothing new. You see them more and more every day. You even see QR code tattoos! This guy did a bit of work to get his QR code costume done, though, and it seems but right to give him a bit of attention.

As you will see when you scroll down, this QR code costume is very simple, and with simplicity comes both the good and the bad. The good is that you will not have to work that hard to get your costume done. If you set aside a day for this, you probably will have enough time left over to go for a stroll in the park. The bad is that it may be a little too simple!

Anyhow, Rob – the creator of the QR code costume – started with these.

Of course, he had to use a QR code generator, which you can find online for free. He used the QR code generator from the ZXing Project, but you can use whatever you want. He then set of with a paintbrush and some black paint to get his project going.

One cool thing about the costume is that you will not get all suffocated inside a massive complicated get up. Of course, you have to make sure you cut holes for your eyes and nose so you don’t end up banging your head against walls and not being able to breathe. Another plus is that you can actually use your costume to do a little promotion. What better way to promote your site or whatever it is you want to promote at a Halloween party?

This is your brain on ice

Brain shaped ice cube trays. Isn’t that all you need to know?

Nine bucks will net you this silicon mold that makes four ice cubes (though I guess “ice spheres” would be more apt) shaped like tiny little brains. ThinkGeek, who sells this awesome little doodad, suggests using them as novelty items at a zombie-themed Halloween party, or as an inside joke for all the nerds you work with at the science lab.

That’s not really thinking outside the box, though, now is it? Come on, let’s exercise a little creative thought. (Yes, that was a carefully-placed and intentional pun. You should know by now that I have no shame.) How about using them for jello shots at your college graduation after-party? Or put a popsicle stick in them and give kindergartners a tasty object lesson?

Hmm, somehow that sounded very sweet and innocent in my head.

Alright, okay… you should probably just stick to the zombie thing.

Awesome Halloween Pumpkin Carvings For Geeks

Who said geeks don’t celebrate Halloween? I am willing to bet a month’s salary (not much, I have to admit) that there will be countless Spocks, Darth Vaders, and other similar characters at parties this weekend. But have you ever thought of carving that pumpkin based on the current social media trends? I honestly haven’t, but the guys at Mashable did an excellent job featuring 12 of the coolest social media pumpkin carvings for Halloween.

You should check the full article out, but here’s a tiny glimpse of what’s in store for you. Needless to say, they’re the ones that made my blood flow more quickly.

Twitter’s Fail Whale – who does not recognize this creature? Twitter has received a lot of flak for its intermittent service, although we have to admit is has become much better. Still, the fail whale has earned its place in history.

Firefox and IE – I use Chrome now since Firefox started to crash on me all the time about a month ago, and I haven’t used IE since forever, but these pumpkins still look awesome, don’t they?

Reddit – I love how they used a reddish hue for the lighting inside the pumpkin. This alien is cuter than ET, in my opinion.

Apple – of course. I could have thought of this myself if I didn’t see Mashable’s write up first (yeah right). A geek pumpkin fest will not be complete without an Apple carving, don’t you think? Maybe you can use Steve Job’s face for a more unique carving?

Halloween Robot: The Rovin' Pumpkin

What more do you need for a simple, (slightly) scary robot this Halloween?

Constructed from some simple bits of LEGO, servo motor, LEDs and simple microchip, the Rovin’ Pumpkin isn’t exactly a hit on the dance floor, but with its glowing green eyes and sneaky little movements, it could scare a few trick or treaters this weekend.
