Pocket-sized video cameras capable of shooting in full high definition video are fairly common now, with the Flip Mino HD probably one of the best known, and most celebrity endorsed, but there are other, cheaper, more versatile options on the market too.

Take the Venturer HD camcorder.

It’s still small, but it is built into a more rugged housing so it’s able to stand up to things I wouldn’t put my Flip (or any standard camcorder, come to that) through. It also has a swivel camera head for lining up shots more easily, or getting the angle just right when mounted on a helmet or clothing, and it even has both USB and HDMI output, for instant viewing on a HDTV or transferring to PC for editing and storage.

It can capture 1080p and 720p video at 30fps, or 480p (YouTube friendly) at 60fps, as well as take 5mp stills (8/12mp with interpolation).

Sure, it’s not going to do all the amazing stuff that prosumer camcorders will, but getting a tiny camcorder like this at a price that won’t break the bank can’t be a bad deal at all.

Putting high definition capability in ever smaller gadgets is all the rage. Not only can you get small HD camcorders but also PMPs that will play back 720p video.

Take this Gemei HD-660. Sadly it’s only available in China at the moment, but it features a 4.3-inch LCD with a 480×272 resolution and can handle most popular video and audio formats (AVI, FLV, MPEG, MP3, WMA, FLAC and more).

Now, obviously, playing back 720p video (or even standard DVD video) on something with this resolution is fairly pointless as you won’t see the difference but it comes with an external video cable so you can hook it up to a TV.

It even has a remote control so you could take it with you, plug it in to a home entertainment system and control it from the comfort of your chair. 32GB of memory means you should be able to fit a decent amount of high definition video onto it, or tons of music.
