These 404 Pages Will Make You Want to…

…jump? Shout? Laugh? Earlier this month, TechCrunch dubbed Blippy’s 404 page as the “best ever.” As can be seen in the image up there, the unicorn is kinda cute, but not impressive, is it? Then again, the fun doesn’t end there. The page is actually interactive, making it a “joy” to explore the 404 page. I am not going to go into the details – go visit Blippy’s 404 page. Have fun clicking! That post prompted me to sniff around for more interesting 404 pages, and guess what I found? Read more »

How important is internet speed to you?

How important is internet speed to you?

Most of us are online every waking moment one way or the other. Computers are on the whole day, our smart-phones are constantly connected and pushing data. As soon as internet is down we’ll “freak” out and our daily routine is disturbed. This past week I spend days fretting over my internet speed. Internet is not cheap here in the Netherlands, I pay an average of 60 euros a month for a broadband cable connection. The package used to be 50 Mbit down and 5 Mbit up. Since then my provider has upgraded the speed to 120 Mbit down and 10 Mbit up. There is no data limit, fair use Read more »

Online adventure games old skool

Online adventure games old skool

Since I was introduced to computers and internet, both which happened in 1997 I was hooked on two things. ICQ and point-and-click game you got on CD-ROMs. I wasn’t aware back then of what was all possible online except for Napster and ICQ, so the games I played where on CD-ROMs. I never remember the names, except it was a mystery game which a guy waking up in a bathroom with no memory of what happened. And the other one was a game set in the Amazon jungle where you travel in a canoe and collect food and items. Hey I was in highschool back then! I’m not a gamer Read more »

Right2Link: Keep web linking free

Right2Link: Keep web linking free

What’s one of the basic philosophies of the Internet? The link. By nature, websites are interlinked and content is discovered. Search engines link based on user queries, bloggers publish critique and commentary, and we can drift either aimlessly or with a purpose around cyberspace for hours and hours. Simply following links. So when the link is threatened by bureaucrats in repressed organisations that either don’t get the Internet, or want to play in it on their own terms, it’s time to sit up and take notice. I’ve seen some pretty stupid “linking policies” over time, but they’re usually published by small websites and are a good source of ridicule. When Read more »

Brits spend three days a month online. Is that all?

I do hope you’re enjoying the survey results we’ve discovered recently, because here’s another one for you concerning how much time Brits spend online. Now, either I spend way too much time online (read, just the right amount of time) or people are underestimating, because the figures from a survey by a price comparison website found that Brits spend just three days per month online. I spend three days a day online. (Yes I did mean to type that, it was supposed to be humorous.) UK peeps say they’d struggle to organise their lives without access to the Internet, and that they’d contact their friends and family far less without Read more »

Personality Disorders Brought About By The Internet – Which One Have You Got?

Personality Disorders Brought About By The Internet – Which One Have You Got?

Personality disorders seem to be a fascinating topic these days. In the old days (maybe when I was not born yet), personality disorders were not really considered to be “scientific” problems. Today, though, it seems that everyone and his mom have been diagnosed with one condition or the other. And YES, it is a legitimate condition. Anyway, a Facebook friend of mine shared a link the other day and it just cracked me up. Titled “6 New Personality Disorders Caused by the Internet,” it outlines some existing personality disorders which have been given a new twist by the Internet. Read more »

Matt Cutts switches everything around and blog still works

Matt Cutts switches everything around and blog still works

Presumably using his decent screen real estate to ensure that all the required windows were open at the same time, Google software engineer Matt Cutts decided he was going to mix things up over the weekend. I took one of my domains, dullest.com, and moved it to TigerTech from pair Networks. I installed the latest version of WordPress on dullest.com and copied the MySQL database from mattcutts.com to dullest.com. I changed my blog layout to the excellent Thesis theme by Chris Pearson. Previously I was using the Almost Spring theme. I added an .htaccess file that will do 302 redirects from www.mattcutts.com/path/file.html to www.dullest.com/path/file.html. Read more »

Internet Explorer 8 finally RELEASED!

Internet Explorer 8 finally RELEASED!

Well, the wait is finally over. Microsoft has just announced the official version of Internet Explorer 8. I really believe this is something that IE needs, and this is the most “open-sourced” version it has. It has greater security features that help the typical user protect himself from the simplest to complicated vulnerabilities. What surprises me is the “private browsing” option. With a click of a button you can tell IE not to store websites you browse from the history list. This was one of the things I loved about Apple’s Safari browser and I’m glad IE has caught on!
