Have You Committed Any of These Geek Sins?

Have You Committed Any of These Geek Sins?

We all know the 10 Commandments (or is that an incorrect assumption?), but have you heard of the 10 geek sins that just might get your geek card revoked? I was not surprised at all when I stumbled upon this article. With all the labels flying around, it but expected to have certain “standards” that will place people in categories. I, for one, am quite wary of labels; but in this world, one has to learn how to deal with them. So anyhow, someone actually came up with a list of no-nos for geeks. Let me run them by you quickly so you can check if you are still worthy Read more »

Use iTunes? Try iTunes Instant

Use iTunes? Try iTunes Instant

I despise searching in iTunes. Don’t get me wrong — I’m a major Applehead. But iTunes’ search is one area where Steve seriously dropped the ball. It’s painfully slow and ridiculously disorganized, a failure in every way. One user decided he had enough, so he created iTunes Instant, an easy, browser-based search engine for iTunes. Not sure how he managed it, especially since Apple’s not known for being fond of other people meddling in their source code. Regardless, iTunes Instant works a lot like Google’s new instant search feature, pulling up results while you’re typing. No wait, no muss, no fuss. Here’s the kicker: iTunes Instant was created by Stephen Read more »

Apple Launches Social Network, Destroys Cable TV

There were some jaws that had to be picked up off the floor this morning when Apple held its latest media event. Emceed as ever by Steve Jobs, the event was primarily about Apple updating its entire line of iPods, but it was a handful of other announcements that stole the show. Here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know. Read more »

How to extract iPod songs using iTunes

When one of my friends’ MP3 player broke, he decided to get his money back, since the same problem was also being reported on other players of the same brand, and decided to buy an iPod Nano instead. When he received, and started using it, one of the first things that upset him was when he realized he couldn’t transfer the music on his iPod to a computer. Compared to his old MP3 player, which simply allowed you to drag-and-drop files, this was quite cumbersome for him. And since the Nano’s capacity was considerably small, considering the number of musics he liked to carry, copying copies of the files to Read more »

2 Cool Things You can do with Growl on OS X

2 Cool Things You can do with Growl on OS X

For those of you who are Mac-heads like myself, I’ve found a great, lightweight, background application that increases the OS X experience. That application is called Growl. I know, I know, Growl has been around for a while but there are many people who don’t know about it. Growl works like this, once it’s installed there is a System Preference panel which allows you to change the settings. Many developers build their applications to work natively with Growl, as can be seen here in this list. Download Growl before doing any of these steps, here. Notifications like this appear in the top right of your screen using Growl 1. Find Read more »

iTunes Music Server on Linux

There is no reason to have massive music collection and not have the ability to stream it out to every computer in the house. Here is a tutorial showing you how to setup a iTunes server on Linux so that you have such capabilities. I need to do this with my Linux box since I now have a laptop to walk around the house with. Only crappy thing is that it requires the manual compilation of some packages, unless of course you have a cool distro that has an awesome package management tool (eg. Debian) then you should be home free. If I ever get around to doing this I Read more »
