Bob Marley fans would recognize those words in a heartbeat, and while I am not that much of a Marley fan, this song has been playing in my head for the longest time. I guess my nighttime lighting at home just fits the song perfectly – or vice versa.

For those who are into lighting as much as I am AND care about your impact on the environment as well, the Lucet should be in your Christmas wish list (for 2010 maybe).

The Lucet is a lamp designed by Rui Palma, and basically involves harnessing the sun’s power to light up your room at night. I have to admit, the concept is nothing new – that’s practically what every other solar gadget in the market does. There is one distinguishing feature of the Lucet that I think would make it appealing to a lot of aesthetically concerned people: it is designed so as to give the user freedom regarding viewing pleasure. That is, one can create different patterns with several Lucets, depending on one’s preferences.

The Lucet is quite small, with three roundish protrusions containing white LEDs each. In the middle, you have the power source – 2 AAA batteries. The whole thing can be slapped onto your windows – the ones that get the most sunlight throughout the day, of course – following any design that you want.

Unfortunately, this lamp remains a concept for now. Still, it is something to look forward to. I can already imagine my windows being a conversation topic with these lamps!

OK, so the fact that the hour is displayed above, and not next to, the minutes might catch a few people out, but it’s not rocket science.

Nice concept, but why not allow it to do more?

Could just stick a Microsoft Surface on it, or how about a variant of the Yamaha Tenori-On synth? How cool would it be to sit down and be able to play rhythms and musical patterns at your coffee table? It would definitely be a fun party object.

For the price, I’d rather take a fairly standard coffee table and build in a more interactive surface.

The shower controls and the shower head are both fitted with LEDs that are used to show how much time is remaining, and also what the temperature of the water is.

I could see this being useful at home, too, if you have someone who uses up all the hot water or takes forever in the shower each morning. Set the timer and cut the water off after a set period of time, or rig it so that it only pushes out cold water after ten minutes.

This is just a concept at present but one that shouldn’t be too hard to implement.

The Moon Jar is just that. It’s a solar-powered LED light source that glows either blue or amber. Leaving it outside during the day will charge it up, ready for it to glow the night away (five to six hours per charge, in fact).

It’s fully waterproof and is constructed from thick, frosted glass for an ambient, subtle glow.

These are glass speakers with white and blue LEDs, and they can even be supplied with some stands that also have lights built in.

Trouble is, they cost close to $1,000 and yet they only offer 10W of output per channel, which is pretty pathetic.

They might look great, but as far as I’m concerned speakers have to perform. I’d rather have boring speakers that pump than underperforming fancy ones.

Nice try Kenwood but give me something I actually want to play my music through.
