Smartphones are now the norm for mobile phones. All brands sell smartphones, it’s more difficult to get a plain mobile phone then a smartphone. Nowadays if you want to buy a phone you have to consider a lot more things then seven years ago. The brand, operating system, touch screen, qwerty or both. Back then you only considered how many minutes and SMS to buy, now data is as important as the previous two.

It has become a pass time of mine, when I’m on public transportation to count how many old skool mobile phones I can spot. I remember three years ago it was cool to spot the first iPhone and now you see more iPhones then you can count. If you don’t like to be like everyone else and like to stand out, you can now buy a brand new old skool mobile phone.

Lëkki™ a French brand sells the Nokia 3210 and the Motorola StarTAC. It’s totally back to the 90′s with these two phones. Plain old mobile phone with black and gray screen, no camera, no internet only calls and SMS messages. You can choose amongst different colors, like green, yellow, and black.

Starting at 95 euros you can own a brand new Nokia 3210 that is sure to raise eyes in a iPhone and BlackBerry dominated world. It is also an ideal gift for people who shun all the latest technology.

The StarTAC I remember well, it was the first mobile phone we owned back in 1998. I used to take it with me when going out at night. I still remember how thin the pull out antenna is.

The original starTAC costs 150 euro while a brandless one costs 130 euros. What a difference compared to what they where worth back in the 90′s.

The reason for my asking this is that I was just looking at a new product from Duracell, dubbed myGrid. Not that I am complaining – I think the name’s actually cool, although it may not really tell you much about the product.

myGrid is a dock which can charge various gadgets at the same time. Think about it, if you have a mobile phone (or two), an mp3 player (or two), and other gadgets, you would probably have lots of wires lying around in a corner near the wall socket. This could get really irritating, not to mention dangerous!

With myGrid, you have just one dock and one wire – from the dock to the socket. One really cool feature of this device is that it has the capability to charge gadgets wirelessly! Of course, the gadgets have to be myGrid-enabled. Currently, myGrid-enabled gadgets are Blackberry, Motorola, and the iPhone. You just need to place these gadgets on the grid and you’re good to go. Even better, you can charge up to four gadgets at a time!

For gadgets which are not enabled, you can purchase add-ons such as the Duracell Power Clip. This will allow you to charge your devices which can connect through the USB port. You can purchase the myGrid Starter Kit from Amazon for a discounted price of $76.79. Add-ons are also available.

Boost Mobile will be able to offer the Stature i9 from the end of this month onwards, while there is no word on Sprint’s release date although you can always pre-register your handset here to be among the first few to own it when available from that carrier.

When you’re in a rushing crowd it does hurt when the earphones are quickly snapped from you! Ouch! Happened to me several times. And it’s a little uncomfortable to wear the wires under your shirts too.
