L'Oreal marketing: MP3 better than Vinyl? Huh?

L’Oreal recently ran a TV ad campaign in the UK for its new hair care product “INOA”, suggesting that its funkily-named coloration product is altogether better than any existing system. Maybe it is, but to a music-appreciating tech geek, the comparisons fall a little flat. Take a look: (Hopefully that video is still there, though for some reasons advertisers don’t always like the exposure that free YouTube marketing gives them) OK, so “first there was the road map. Now there is the GPS”. Let’s skip for a moment the horrible phrase “the GPS” because that’s not the focus of this rant. Now… “First there was vinyl. Now there is the Read more »

Lightsaber MP3 player for Star Wars fans who don't need features

Lightsaber MP3 player for Star Wars fans who don't need features

If being a fan of Star Wars merchandise is more important than the actual functionality of those products, then the official lightsaber MP3 player could be just what you’re looking for. Low on features (plays music in the order it’s stored on a memory card) but high in visual appeal, it’s 8cm (about 3 inches) in length and authentically detailed. It should be, in fact, because it has been officially licensed by Taito. I’m sure you can get knockoff variants for less than the $23.90 being asked here — they might even have an LCD to view your music track details on. This one doesn’t, but then it worked for Read more »

Touch DJ: budding music mixers, grab your iPhone

Touch DJ: budding music mixers, grab your iPhone

Are you a budding DJ? I remember taking every opportunity I had, regardless of what hardware or even music I had around me, to create “proper” mix tapes and voiceovers. I’ve even DJed a few private parties, though I’m certainly no Armin Van Buuren. I just love having the ability to mix together music and play around with it, but I’ve never invested in turntables which is why I love software-based mixers or the amazing Pacemaker. Now, from the developers of noise.io, an amazing iPhone-based synth, comes Touch DJ, an amazing piece of software that lets you mix music without the need for headphones. Read more »

Getting Nostalgic Over The Walkman

Getting Nostalgic Over The Walkman

Andy just posted something about the Walkman’s 30th anniversary and guess what that got me doing? I had to dig up some old boxes in an effort to find my old Walkman! Yes, I still have it! After spending a good part of an hour trying to locate it, I was more than ready to use it again after so many years. Ironically, I was not able to satisfy my urge – for the life of me, I could not find any cassette tapes! I guess they have been left behind at my parents’ house. Anyhow, it got me reading up on more Walkman stories, and one of the most Read more »

Wear Your Own Personal Soundtrack

Wear Your Own Personal Soundtrack

I just came from the theatre; watched Watchmen. I am ashamed to say that I have never read the graphic novel but that didn’t stop me from watching the movie. After all, everyone says that they pretty much stuck to the story so it’s about the same. Aside from the awesome cinematics and effects, I have to say that the soundtrack is one of the best points of the movie. And speaking of soundtracks, have you noticed how much drama the music adds to movies? Read more »

Creative Zen X-Fi

Price: £100 ($180) Available: Widely in electronics stores Rating: 5/5 A product that recently caught my eye is the new Creative Zen X-Fi 8GB MP3 Player. I’ve been a big fan of Creative’s MP3 offerings as I have never really got on with the gear from Apple. When I got my first MP3 player in fact it was a Creative model, with only 32MB of memory. That shows how long I’ve been buying them! So, the X-Fi is the new flagship product and offers to restore the quality of your compressed music ensuring that you hear what the artist(s) and producer(s) intended from their work. All sounds so good so Read more »
