If you’ve been keeping up with the anime scene in America, then you’ll know that Cencoroll will finally make its American debut on Semptember 25 at the New York Anime Festival.

Cencoroll is a science fiction film about a white monster-like thing, a boy named Testsu (who apparently looks after one of the white monster things), a girl named Yuki, and their battle against other white monster-like things and the Japanese Self Defense Forces. Unlike most anime nowadays that seem to focus on the “moe” factor, Cencoroll is in a different class which includes famous titles like Spirited Away, Hoshi no Koe, and Pale Cocoon. It’s also cool how the white monster things can transform into whatever they want.

What’s really impressive about this film was that most of it was done entirely by one man, Atsuya Uki. He was the one that wrote, directed, and did the animation for the whole film. Just about the only thing that wasn’t done by Uki were the voices and music. The film stars Kana Hanazawa, Hiro Shimono, Ryōhei Kimura, and Satomi Moriya; and the music is done by the group Supercell. The ending song “Love and Roll” is especilly catchy and is worth a listen to.

Cencoroll was previously shown in Canada on July 28, 2009 at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and made its Japanese debut a month later on August 22. If you missed seeing it in Canada and Japan, New York will be your last chance to see it before having to wait for the DVDs to come out this October.
