Created by YouTube user eryth0rbic, the stop motion video is actually a project for a photography class. There isn’t much happening except for what Pac-Man always does: run around eating those pellets all the while avoiding the deadly ghosts. Still, the video is something that can amuse you, albeit temporarily, on a lazy Friday morning (or afternoon, depending on when you get to read this).

Oh, the creator of this Pac-Man stop motion video says it took him around 2 to 3 hours to sculpt the creatures and the entire setup, then about an hour to shoot the video, and then about 3 to 4 hours to edit. There are around 100 frames for the game, while the credits is simply sped up video and not stop motion. If you ask me, that is a lot of work for less than a minute’s video! (Then again, that shows how much I know about making videos. I just enjoy watching them.)

What did I say? Temporary distraction, yes? I do have to say that the sculpted creatures made me want to dig out the clay my nephews play with. Maybe creating my own stop motion video will do me some good.

Pac-Man is one of, if not the, most well-known arcade game of all-time.  Created by Namco and distributed in the U.S. by Midway, the game was released in 1980.   31 years ago, yes 31.

When the game was released, it was turning point for arcade games, spawning not only merchandise related to the game, but also an animated TV show and spin-offs, such as Ms. Pac-Man.

Why was Pac-Man so popular, remaining so to this day (yours truly played the game at an arcade last week)? Pac-Man was unique when released, as it was one of the first games which garnered mass appeal for both males and females.

One man, Toronto’s Jonathan Guberman, has taken Pac-Man back in time, creating Pac Machina, something he describes as:

“physicalization of a classic videogame: I’m building a playable, mechanical Pac-Man cabinet, called “Pac Machina” (subscribe to my RSS feed if you want to follow my progress!). Of course, essential to a Pac-Man game is Pac-Man himself, and Pac-Man isn’t Pac-Man if he doesn’t chomp. I needed a mechanism for that and it had to be as simple as possible (i.e. no servos or stepper motors). So, after some trial, error, and trigonometry, I built a clockwork Pac-Man.”

On his site Guberman describes the process of creating Pac Machina, with step-by-step images and the video below displaying how the game works.

Unfortunately he says that he may make one, and only one, of these machines, so if you want the one he creates, or a kit for creating your own, you may want to contact him as soon as possible.

Made using a huge Tesla coil and a long photo exposure, it’s not technically the exact shape of a Christmas tree (the traditional triangular pine), but it’s still wicked cool. Even more impressive are all of the different colors that electricity addict Peter from Australia managed to create with it, which you can see more of on his website.

How can you go wrong with lingerie? Well, one look at that photo and you’ll know how. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I don’t like purple all that much? Purple and yellow – even worse.  The whole look just makes me want to put my hands over my eyes.  Or maybe it’s just me?

So what do you guys think?  Are these Pac-Man things absolutely distasteful or am I just overreacting?

Art based on video games is something that won’t get boring. No two art pieces are the same and with creativity you can go a long way. Artist Kalapusa created a real life looking Pac-Man sculpture representing his view on how Pac-Man would look like with his age taken in account.

I study a skin type that fits the subject, I figure out where the folds would be and how the wrinkles would form out with age

The art piece is made from clay, painted with acrylics and kept in a bottle filled with formaldehyde to make it look like a rare specimen.

It’s the first time that I come across an art piece that seriously tries to picture how a video game character would look like in reality. In an age where video games are completely integrated in our life I find such art pieces beautiful and valuable to our culture. Especially with a video game character like Pac-Man, the game celebrated its 30th anniversary this year which makes it a true classic. Thirty years in video games year is almost ancient.

The only thing missing is that artist would start selling their video games inspired art pieces. They have much more appeal than mass fabricated or even limited edition paraphernalia.

I have no idea why a bunch of people would spend so much time and energy creating something like this. I also know that I certainly would never have the patience to plan this sort of thing out and pull it all together.

But all that matters is that somebody — the NOTsoNOISY crew — did bring 111 individuals together at a movie theater and got them to move from seat to seat for four hours in order to grace YouTube with this utterly brilliant video.

Human Pac-Man is actually the fifth video in a series of “human video game performances” that these guys did. After the jump, I’ve embedded the other four.

As you can tell, these folks have a thing for retro games. Next up was Human Pole Position.

And last but not least (until Human Pac-Man came along), they gave us Human Tetris.

Now, every time you sit through a boring presentation with pie charts all over the place, you will be able to bear it. You just need to remember this particular pie chart of Pac-man’s and you can chuckle quietly to yourself!

As amusing as that pie chart it, I think this scale tops it.

If you’re anything like me, you absolutely detest going to the doctor’s office. It’s not that doctors are detestable in general. It’s just such a hassle to wait for hours only to be “seen” for a few minutes! Anyhow, the next time you have to see your doctor and you don’t feel like talking – just print this out and POINT.

Alternatively, this chart can be used in the workplace. Feeling ill and wanting to go home? Your boss doesn’t seem to believe you? Whip out this chart and POINT. If you can’t even talk about how bad you’re feeling, it must be bad. ;)

Pac-man junkies, do you have any other images like these?

By the way, you can also use the WASD keys to control Ms. Pac-Man. This is for the two-player version of the game, which you can engage in by “inserting two coins.” As you can see in the screen shot, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button is replaced with an “Insert Coin” button.

Anyhow, just to take you down memory lane, the first ever Pac-Man arcade game machine was released by Namco on May 22, 2010. This was done in Shibuya, Tokyo. This game has ends on the 256th screen. Google, in an effort to stay true to the original, has also programmed the Doodle to end on this screen. You can play with the Doodle for 48 hours. What are you waiting for?

Uber-popular 80s video game + thousands of LEGO blocks. What’s not to love?

This tabletop Pac-Man arcade game is built entirely out of LEGO. Well, except for the electronics hidden inside. That’s right, it actually plays.

It runs not just Pac-Man, but other 80s games like Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, and “many more,” according to the builder, Ben Fleskes. His website provides frustratingly few details — such as how long it took to make, or exactly how many bricks were used — but it does mention that the finished build is almost three feet tall, and that no LEGO bricks were cut or altered in order to complete the structure. And you gotta love this: the control panel with the joystick and buttons? It’s held in place using LEGO Technic pieces.

Fleskes should start manufacturing these things to sell. Bet the demand would outpace his supply!

Any idea what they are for? I really hope I won’t get into trouble for posting this image, but they illustrate best what pasties are used for.

So who would ever find the need for these pasties? Girls, I am sure that even though your job does not require you to bare yourself, having a couple pairs of these pasties could be quite useful every now and then. Gone are the days of having to use the same old boring pair of pasties. Now you can go stag to a party and smile secretively to yourself – as if you knew something that no one else did.

For a mere 60 euros you can have a pair of these babies. Pretty steep, I agree, but the idea has been planted. If you can’t spare that much, then I guess you can head on over to the nearest arts and crafts shop and come up with your own design! (That should work, too!)

If you’re in South Georgia, you must have seen this Pac-Man Car, not chasing the monster pellets but probably just giving its owner a ride of his life. Speaking of the owner, he could probably Pac-Man’s most ardent fan. I mean, who would paint his 1996 Chevy Caprice in yellow and red Pac-Man theme?Not only is this car’s body painted with Pac-Man images and shapes but even its leather seats are customized with Pac-Mac designs.

And wait until you see the Pac-Man car’s rims – underneath the chrome wheels is Pac-Man’s face painted in between. Can you imagine looking at this car’s wheels while on the move?  On a hot sunny day, I would advise you to avoid looking at the car’s moving wheels do, it might distract you from your own driving.

It looks cool, right? Gives me an idea to paint my car witheither  Astroboy or Super Mario.

Still, I love this concept. The Pac-Man shirt has our little yellow friend chomping up button dots, while the Tetris variant has a lot of coloured blocks at the base of the shirt and even a vertical block as the zip handle. Nice.

Even the clothing sizes reflect the design — the Pac-Man version comes in one (small), two (medium) and three (large) sizes, while the Tetris one is just available in small and large.
