Happy Pi Day 2011! Today, pi lovers can celebrate this number for the 22nd year in a row. Founded by physicist Larry Shaw more than two decades ago, Pi Day has become known all over the world – both online and offline.

You can do whatever you want to do to make a toast to Pi – including stuffing yourself with your favorite pie. Here are some interesting things related to Pi Day. Last week, Robin shared a video showing us how Pi sounds when made into music. It is a mesmerizing piece of work, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go click that link.

If you are planning on throwing a party – whether tonight or some time later – make sure that you get your hands on these Pi Ice Cubes.

How many numbers of Pi can you recite from memory? The average person might stop at 3.14, but if you have good memory, and you want to show it off, try one million digits of Pi.

One way by which you can celebrate Pi Day is to greet your friends who may or may not know about the holiday. Why not send a few greeting cards today? Over at 123Greetings, there are some e-cards which you can send for free – of course, they’re all about Pi.

If you have a little bit of baking skill, why not make yummy Pi goodies like these?

These cupcakes were made by Corey Marie in 2008.

How about some Apple Pie/Pi? I wouldn’t say no to this! For sure, it looks better than the apple pie I had the other week. There are more pie/pi ideas at Serious Eats, if you need more inspiration.

If you can’t go into the kitchen without burning something, just get some wearable Pi – we understand. Check out shirt number two in our list of 10 Really Cool Geek T-Shirts.

If these are not enough Pi for you, visit Exploratorium’s list of activities for Pi Day. Again, Happy Pi Day everyone! And, don’t forget to throw a birthday greeting down Albert Einstein’s way as well!

I don’t usually dig math. I’m a writer; words are my thing. But never before have I seen math translated into such exquisite art.

A musician named Michael John Blake has taken the holy grail of mathematics — Pi — and transformed it into music. He stresses that his song is an artistic interpretation, not an exact, scientific rendering. Proceeding from the notion that numbers can be represented by musical notes on a piano, Blake used 31 decimal points of Pi to make a complex melody that I’d call beautiful and even joyous. I’d love to know how long it took him to create this.

In the above video, watch as Blake plays the melody of Pi on numerous musical instruments, including piano, banjo, accordion, guitar, xylophone, autoharp, and more, and mixes them together to create sweet, sweet music. Or is it math?

Now, I do not really have to explain to you the reason behind today being Pi Day, do I? In case the obvious is lost on you, check the date. Today is March 14, 2010. In figures, that 3/14/2010. Now you’re catching on…

The official web site for this holiday can be found at Pi Day. Just to refresh your memory, here is a little something from the official web site:

Pi, Greek letter ( ), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th. Pi = 3.1415926535…

With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.

Through the web site, you can actually send a greeting to your geeky friends who would love to celebrate Pi Day with you. The options via an eCard, via Twitter, or via Facebook. Whichever venue you choose, you will be sure to impress those who care.

Here’s another piece of trivia – today is Albert Einstein’s birthday as well! Now how’s that for coincidence? Check out your local geek hangouts; there’s probably free pie going around. No pun intended.
