“Real” being a relative term, this is indeed a real sonic screwdriver. It doesn’t emit any sonic waves, but in every other way, it’s the real deal, a “hero prop” exactly like the one used by Matt Smith on Doctor Who. You won’t believe how much it costs.

Crafted by hand by Doctor Who‘s own Nick Robatto — the Cardiff based prop maker who’s created all of the Doctor’s sonic screwdrivers since the show’s 2005 return — these bad boys do everything Matt Smith’s prop does on the set, with the green lights and extending bits and claws that pop open at the end. There are no mass-produced or machined parts; these sonic screwdrivers are made from 148 components, including aluminum, copper, brass, resin, and leather. And according to Quantum Mechanix, the company selling them, it takes Robatto two weeks to assemble just one.

Only 25 of these things are being made, and to own one, you’ll need to sign up for a waiting list at QMx’s website. Which doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get one. But be certain you really want one before signing up for that waiting list. If you’re lucky enough to be selected to buy one, it will cost you a cool $3,995.00 (that’s £2,599.95 in the U.K.).

A few more details to entice you:

8.5″ long closed; 9.5″ extended

Comes with a custom-built, lighted display stand with Gallifreyan writing

Each stand shows its number and has Nick Robatto’s signature on it

QMx says it will be releasing a larger replica of the 11th Doctor’s sonic screwdriver sometime in the future, but stresses that the product described above is not a replica — it’s the real deal.

On April 19th at 8:11 PM, Skynet was supposed to become aware. In the Terminator franchise that day is known as Judgment Day, when the machines turns against us. On April 19th Judgment Day didn’t come obviously. Twitter though was buzzing with the fact that they day had arrived. I’m sure the die hard fans secretly hoped it would happen, just for the fascination of time travel. Sheldon Cooper even added a Skynet clause to the roommate agreement with Leonard specifying about when one friend needs help to destroy an artificial intelligence he’s created and that’s taking over Earth.

As a fan of the Matrix franchise I also wonder sometimes if we live in a computer program, I guess that comes with being a geek.

As for Terminator fans, there is now a T-800 Brain Chip replica for sale, the chip that made it possible for Skynet to become aware.

The brain chip was salvaged from the severely damaged Terminator from the end of the original Terminator movie, and provided the basis for all of the research and development carried out by Cyberdyne Systems. This brain chip was the key to the development of Cyberdyne systems weapons and robotics developments, that ultimately lead to Judgment Day! Comes complete with a themed light-up display base with a Cyberdyne Systems plaque.

Judgment Day

The replica costs $169 dollar, there are only 400 pieces available world wide. They start shipping in August 2011. If you are a true Terminator fan you should snap up this opportunity. Judgment Day did not happen but at least you can have the replica of a piece that should have made it happen.

Well, what you don’t get is a “Windows for Dummies” book from Amazon, or a Zune, or Microsoft Office.

What you might consider is the Plush Jobs 17-inch tall replica doll of… Steve Jobs – who else?

If your chosen Apple fan isn’t visibly delighted with a mini-Steve, then he or she is either lying, or isn’t as much of an Applehead as you thought.

In that case you could mention that it’s great to “cuddle up with him and pretend he’s whispering corporate secrets in your ear”, that “Jobs enjoys hanging out with your other stuffed animals” or that “he thinks it would be very nice to live at your house”.

The cruel inferior-operating-system-loving practical jokers among you could always create a little flap in Plush Jobs’ back so that, over time, you can take bits of his stuffing out and then comment on how thin Steve’s been looking recently.

Not that I’d condone it unless you enjoy being beaten up by a rabid iPhone-wielding nutcase (that’d be me again).

Buy one here for $27.99. It’s made by Podbrix, the designers who also brought you the iPod Shuffle LEGO case.
