-1 to keyloggers, +1 to pioneering TV, -1 to collegiate education, +1 to privacy and, of course, a big old +1 to robots, too. Not sure what the preceding means? Read on and learn all about it in this, our milestone twentieth edition of Wins and Fails This Week in Geek. WIN: +1 Google receives 1 skill point for reinventing the wheel as they roll out their Facebook “like”-esque feature called “+1”, which allows users to share content they enjoy with others. To use +1 you need a public Google profile; your name will be displayed along with your vote. The feature isn’t fully implemented yet but Google users are Read more »

The iPhone 4 Contenders
Apple’s fourth iPhone (iPhone 4) is just as popular as – if not more popular than – the first generation iPhone. Three years and four versions later, the iPhone has been immensely improved, but with a growing price tag. For the die hard Apple fan – and perhaps for those who simply must have the latest and the greatest – price is not an issue. They will buy as soon as the iPhone is available, and most of them will buy every new release. But not everyone is willing to spend that amount of money each year and not everyone is an Apple fan no matter what. If the price Read more »
Samsung’s Barbie Laptop
Remember the recently held contest sponsored by Mattel wherein the general public got a say as to Barbie’s modern day careers? The voting was publicized like nothing else, and the results yielded two careers: computer engineer and news anchor. Here’s something you may not know: according to statistics, young girls actually voted for the latter, while adults chose the former. I guess the idea of Barbie being a computer engineer has not caught on with the little ones. Read more »
Samsung Corby Pro is filled with win, except for one thing
I couldn’t put my finger on what I found disturbing at first: the Samsung Corby Pro is a sure winner for 2010. It has filled the niche for an el-cheapo phone that comes with QWERTY keypad layout and WiFi … all this for about USD $200.00. SO why was I so averse to it when I took the phone home? Read more »
5 Uses for Samsung's Transparent AMOLED Screen
Samsung raised the bar for innovation this CES 2010, bringing us one step closer to the floating digital interface we see in Avatar and Minority Report. So it’s baby steps with transparent screens. If you think about it though factors like sunlight glare and privacy will easily compromise usability. Here are five uses for the see-thru screen portable. 1. Team Based LAN Gaming Voice chat is a staple in today’s gaming industry. But sometimes your team wants to have a look at your screen’s killcam to know where exactly that n00b tuber is chucking out grenades. Rather than give your neck a bad strain, just look forward. 2. Call Centers Read more »
Ape updates Facebook in captivity, takes photos, has lots of fans
That’s a self portrait above from Nonja, an ape raised by a stock broker in 1976 and now resides in the Schönbrunn Zoo. Her daily routine is pretty much the same as any orangutan: eating, sleeping, gallyvanting, playing with the kids (sometimes spitting water at them from the cage), and updating her Facebook wall with photos of her latest escapades including movie night with the girls, shopping sprees, and drunken stupors. Nonja is part of Samsung’s latest viral campaign. There’s not much to it really. All they did was give her a Samsung ST1000, a point and shoot camera with WiFi connectivity. All she really does is click down on Read more »
Samsung joins the e-reader gang
A little late in the game but it’s a good thing, everyone likes options, options, options. Samsung’s upcoming reader, The Papyrus, is creating such a stir in the industry these days as most major gadget/tech blogs have written a lot about it. It has been told that the Papyrus has office applications like the calculator, scheduler, and contacts… it’s a mini-PDA isn’t it? Oh yes it is! It will launch as a touchscreen device too, now that’s awesome. The Papyrus is an A5-size e-ink device (it’s 5.8 inches by 8.3 inches while the entire Kindle 2 measures 5.3 inches by 8 inches with a 6-inch screen). It’s set to finally Read more »
Chicago residents play on world's largest working cell phone
While it’s a blatant marketing plug for Samsung and a wireless company, there’s something cool – and “Big” – about this oversized cellphone that’s been set up in Chicago. An exact working replica of the Samsung Messenger, it stands 15 feet long, 13 feet high and 3 feet deep, and is on its side to give access to the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Residents have been able to come and make free phone calls and send text messages on the device. Perhaps this is a new way of keeping fit while communicating with people. At least no-one can complain that this phone’s keyboard is too fiddly to use for their fat Read more »
Samsung YP-P3 Media Player
It might say on the box that it plays MP3s, but it sure does a lot more than that. The Samsung YP-P3 is as you can see an attractive player and is arriving in the UK later this month. There’s a wonderfully high resolution display that has haptic (touch screen) to acknowledge your finger presses. It’s worth mentioning that the 3 inch screen is WQVGA – which produces an extremely clear image. Also of benefit is the ability to use various EmoDio widgets on the YP-P3 – a throwback from the Tocco interface – and these widgets are (apart from being handy) quite interesting little things. Don’t expect google maps Read more »
Samsung Introduces “Blue Earth”
You’ve heard the line “don’t leave your electronics out in the sun, specially in your car on a bright sunny day… otherwise, it’ll just “fry” up”. With the recent announcement of Samsung‘s “Blue Earth” the line is now “make sure you leave your phone in the sun to charge up! :) It’s not a flip or fold-up phone… though it does look like it right? What’s great is that it’s a full touch phone… yup, following the bandwagon, but with the beautiful twist of “green” through and through. Read more »
