“Like” Facebook? You’ll “+1″ Google

“Like” Facebook? You’ll “+1″ Google

For ages, it’s been rumored that Google was planning a social network to rival Facebook, since Facebook has radically changed the way so many of us use the web. Google has finally unveiled its next big thing, but it’s not a social network at all. It’s more of a “social search” function built into its popular search engine results. “Google +1” is a direct competitor to Facebook’s ever-present “Like” button, and you can try it out right now. It hasn’t been implemented for all users yet, but if you opt in to Google +1, you can mark the websites you like best. When one of your Google friends or Read more »

Social Media in Church and State

Social Media in Church and State

Social networking needs no shots in the arm, yet it received two this week anyway, courtesy of major endorsements from the White House and the Pope. The White House will be utilizing the social aspects of Twitter and YouTube in particular to complement the President’s State of the Union Address. Senior administrative officials in the Obama administration will field questions from Twitter users after the speech, while later in the week Press Secretary Robert Gibbs will also do a question and answer session on the microblogging giant. Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v. 5

Wins and Fails This Week in Geek v. 5

Zombies on TV. Drunk tweeting. Parakeets eating diarrhea. Filthy rich hackers. What do these things have in common? Why, it’s another installment of wins and fails this week in geek, that’s what! WIN: Zombies Again. After the bazillionth week trending on Surchur and Google Trends, zombies are still going strong. Of course, this is largely due to the overwhelming success of The Walking Dead, which premiered on Halloween night. The comic-to-TV adaptation drew in the most viewers ever for a premier on its channel, AMC, with over a cool 5 million tuning in on the night and more than 3 million following up the day it was rerun. The Ultimate Social Network for Geeks

The Ultimate Social Network for Geeks

Got GetGlue? If not, you should. If there’s one thing we geeks love to do, it’s talk about the pop culture stuff that we love and hate. GetGlue makes this super easy, making it the perfect social network for geeks. GetGlue is like Foursquare or Gowalla for, well… stuff. Instead of checking in at locations and events, GetGlue lets you check in when you’re watching a TV show or movie, listening to music, playing a video game, reading a book, and more (without those pesky security concerns, such as when you tell the world you’re not at home, making your house an easy target for burglars). Its secondary purpose is to Read more »

Lifelogging Device For Techie Cats

Lifelogging Device For Techie Cats

I’ve never been a cat person, but I cannot deny that these critters can be so cute; and there is no doubt about it – there are a lot of techies out there who are so in love with their cat pets. If you’re one of them, you will be delighted to know that Sony has just created a gadget that will allow your cat to be part of the cyberworld – through Twitter in particular. During the even Open House 2010, which took place on the 28th of May this year, Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) Inc. showed off what they call a lifelogging device for cats. The idea Read more »

The Social Network Pokes Fun At Mark Zuckerberg

The Social Network Pokes Fun At Mark Zuckerberg

The Internet boom has made millionaires and billionaires out of the most unlikely people; and if the leaked screenplay of the movie The Social Network is to be believed, then Facebook Mark Zuckerberg was as unlikely as unlikely could be. Mark Zuckerberg rose to fame when, at the age of 23, he founded the most popular social networking site today – Facebook. Who doesn’t know about Facebook? Who is not on Facebook? Heck, even my in-laws have a Facebook account! Anyhow, with popularity comes controversy, and Zuckerberg has gotten more than his share – probably rightly so. Certain changes in the settings of Facebook has riled up many people, worst Read more »

Facebook: Relationship Buster

Facebook: Relationship Buster

Now that Valentine’s Day is over, let’s read some not-so-mushy stuff… I think that many just might agree with that title. I have heard so many horror stories about Facebook has brought about some nasty things into relationships. Perhaps those things could have been avoided sans Facebook. Perhaps not. No one can really tell, can they? However, some American lawyers were interviewed by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) in a survey aimed at looking at divorce cases. What did they find out? Jeff Bertolucci of PC World narrates: The survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) shows that 81 percent of the Academy’s members in the Read more »
