Got GetGlue? If not, you should. If there’s one thing we geeks love to do, it’s talk about the pop culture stuff that we love and hate. GetGlue makes this super easy, making it the perfect social network for geeks. GetGlue is like Foursquare or Gowalla for, well… stuff. Instead of checking in at locations and events, GetGlue lets you check in when you’re watching a TV show or movie, listening to music, playing a video game, reading a book, and more (without those pesky security concerns, such as when you tell the world you’re not at home, making your house an easy target for burglars). Its secondary purpose is to Read more »

This Is What Happens When Social Networks Are Made Into Movies
News about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s life being made into a movie spread earlier this year – with people having different reactions. Some are quite excited about it, others merely chuckle at the thought. What’s for sure is that it is getting a lot of attention. The movie is due to be released in October, and in July, we saw the full trailer of The Social Network. Here it is, in case you didn’t get to see it. I have to admit – in spite of the overly dramatic treatment, the trailer makes the movie seem interesting. This is not the main reason for this post, though. The release of Read more »
Some "Useful" Venn Diagrams
Who doesn’t love Venn diagrams? They’ve always had a way of making concepts easier to understand. I suppose this is true for most visual learners. It seems that countless other people have found a better use for Venn diagrams – to make your work day more bearable. Take that diagram up there (via Next Round). It’s been making the rounds for some time now and I am not certain that it’s accurate, but it sure will take your mind off whatever’s bothering you! At the very least, you’ll be assessing your social aptitude (or ineptitude), obsessive tendencies, and intelligence. And, if you take any of that stuff seriously, then you Read more »
The Facebook Effect
Some people have all the luck, don’t they? Take what’s his face – the dude who “invented” Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg’s his name, I think. Just several weeks ago, I wrote about a movie being made about him. Dubbed The Social Network, it’s not exactly flattering, from what I hear. Still, how many guys in their 20s have their lives made into movies? (Okay, so there’s more than a handful, but still!) So anyway, this time, a book has been published about Facebook – if not exactly about Mark Zuckerberg. (I just now realized how his last name can take on an entirely different meaning if the first letter was pronounced Read more »
Death and the web: inevitable tech decisions
Sadly, this week I am coming to terms with the death of a friend. They’re the first person I know to die that had a social media presence — namely a Facebook account — and at present that page seems eerily ‘in limbo’. Social networking seems to be at such a place presently that, although it is widely accepted as the norm by those who use it, for others it is still a complete mystery. Yet, particularly if someone dies quite young, it is those who are confused by Web 2.0 that may be left to decide what to do with the accounts. The Facebook account in question hasn’t been Read more »
Is social networking less safe, or are users more stupid?
The summary of a new report into online security, the full version of which will be available tomorrow, suggest that social networks are less safe than a year ago. However, I am wondering if the fact is that the collection of its users are just more careless / stupid. Security firm Sophos reckons there has been a 70% rise in attacks on social network sites, while nearly three out of four companies think workers’ behaviour online puts their business at risk. Three out of five users say they have been spammed via social networking sites, while one in three says they’ve been sent malware: both up around 70% on last Read more »
Women outnumber men on most social networks. Rejoice!
Less than a week after we discovered the amazing truth that women know about gadgets too, we’re now led to believe that there’s a helluva lot of them on social networks, too. Male geeks looking to pull by sharing their favourite links and photos need to be careful where they do it, though, for men still outnumber women on Slashdot, Reddit and Digg. Unfortunately, this is probably where most of the true geeks are hanging out a lot of the time. There’s also no age breakdown, so while you might fancy your chances are higher on the likes of Bebo and MySpace, you could find yourself in a bit of Read more »
