IXOS Divo 2.1: the compact high quality iPod dock

IXOS Divo 2.1: the compact high quality iPod dock

We’re great fans of decent home audio systems, so the Divo 2.1 compact iPod dock caught our eye. Yes, the speakers are visually appealing (perhaps not so much as the Harman Kardon GLA-55 speakers we showed off last month, that obviously inspired a lot of you) but there’s more to it than that. Yes, it will dock your iPod or iPhone and do all the stuff you’d expect from that. However, it will also improve the sound quality from any device you choose to plug in to it. Given the fairly poor audio output you get from the built-in speakers many items such as laptops and TVs, that has to Read more »

Harman Kardon GLA-55 speakers cut from ice (OK, glass)

Harman Kardon GLA-55 speakers cut from ice (OK, glass)

Audio speakers are either boring black cubes of plastic and wood surround, or else they’re in some kind of dock that you stick an iPod into, right? Maybe for you, but for those audiophiles who can afford high-end equipment (and are probably not listening to compressed MP3 files on their iPod) comes the likes of the Harman Kardon GLA-55 speakers. They’re not carved from ice (because they’d melt, duh) but they’re exquisitely formed from clear glass. My audiophilia isn’t advanced enough to explain the tech involved in these speakers, but I can tell it’s cutting edge. Here’s the lowdown as explained in the press release: The GLA-55 features many proprietary Read more »

Orb's spherical speakers for perfectly formed audio

Orb's spherical speakers for perfectly formed audio

I’m embarrassed as I compare the bulky, oblong speakers sitting on my desk with these lovely round and compact ones from Orb Audio. The Mod1 satellite speakers are just four inches in diameter and made from high carbon steel. There’s a lot of sound technology in there, too, including rare earth magnets, Santoprene, Nomex and CCAD voice coils. The speaker system is also easily upgradable, just by adding more speakers to form a Mod2 or Mod4 setup. There are compact subwoofers available too. Read more »

Kenwood create glass speakers: looks over performance

Kenwood create glass speakers: looks over performance

Does Kenwood make washing machines, because when I first saw these speakers that’s what I thought they were modelled on. These are glass speakers with white and blue LEDs, and they can even be supplied with some stands that also have lights built in. Trouble is, they cost close to $1,000 and yet they only offer 10W of output per channel, which is pretty pathetic. Read more »

Wear Your Own Personal Soundtrack

Wear Your Own Personal Soundtrack

I just came from the theatre; watched Watchmen. I am ashamed to say that I have never read the graphic novel but that didn’t stop me from watching the movie. After all, everyone says that they pretty much stuck to the story so it’s about the same. Aside from the awesome cinematics and effects, I have to say that the soundtrack is one of the best points of the movie. And speaking of soundtracks, have you noticed how much drama the music adds to movies? Read more »

The Phonofone

The Phonofone

I whistled the sexy tune when I first saw this, and you would too I know! :) The Phonofone II special black design is by Tristan Zimmerman for Charles & Marie. The price (?) a hefty US$600. Through passive amplification alone, these unique pieces instantly transform any personal music player + earbuds into a sculptural audio console. Without the use of external power or batteries, the Phonofone II inventively exploits the virtues of horn Read more »

Portable Tripod Speaker for your MP3

Portable Tripod Speaker for your MP3

This is a little odd, when I first saw this I thought a digital camera was supposed to be up there. But close study would show that the plug is for audio. The Portable Tripod Speaker is supposed to be “clever” until you take a step back and think is my precious MP3 gadget safe on top. Hmmm… valid question indeed. If you’ve got a steady table to put this on top of, AND if you’ve got careful kids at home, then maybe your MP3 player IS safe. With the specifications below the jump, it does offer decent sound for a US$20 speaker set. Read more »
