Today at WWDC, Steve Jobs unveiled the long-awaited and already-leaked iPhone 4 — which is not the “iPhone 4G,” as was anticipated. Here are the highlights:

The design of the iPhone has been completely overhauled. Gone is the soap-shaped smartphone of… well, yesterday. Instead, we have a sleek new ultra-thin device shaped not unlike a 2001 monolith, with rounded edges. In essence, it looks like a miniature iMac. It’s high-density glass on the front and back, with stainless steel around the sides. The phone’s antenna is built in to the metal siding — just one of many clever innovations that allow the new device to be so incredibly compact. It’s 34% thinner than the iPhone 3Gs, but a hair heavier.

Inside, it packs an Apple A4 processor, the same ultra-fast processor that saves on battery power, that’s inside the iPad. Even bigger news is the super high-res display, which Apple has named “Retina Display,” because it’s a higher pixel count per inch than the human eye is capable of detecting. They’re also adding a 3-axis gyroscope, which Apple speculates should lead to better games. A bigger battery and the new processor equate to a longer battery life, which Apple claims is up to 7 hours of talk, 10 hours of video or web browsing, 40 hours of music, and 300 hours of standby.

The built-in cameras — yes, two of them — are set to revolutionize the way the iPhone is used, because the main camera takes better quality pictures and video, and the front-facing camera allows for “FaceTime,” which is basically video phone capabilities. FaceTime is limited to WiFi (no 3G yet), and only works between iPhone 4′s, but it looks as slick and impressive as everything else Apple does.

Apple has decided to give the iPhone operating system its own name — something that’s more descriptive than just its use in the iPhone itself. Since the OS is being used in the iPad and iTouch, and no doubt Steve sees it as the foundational base of the future of his company, the new name is “iOS,” making this new version iOS 4.

iBooks is coming to the iPhone with iPhone 4, as is iMovie, with a surprisingly robust movie editing software suit for such a small device. iMovie for iPhone will be available as an app in the iTunes store (man, that’s a lot of “i”s in one paragraph) for $4.99. iBooks will be a free download.

For the first time, Apple is making the iPhone available in a color other than black. A white version is being made as well, and both versions will be available starting June 24th in the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, and Japan. Pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB.

Apple is hyping it as if it’s as big a revolution in smartphones as the original iPhone. But what do you think? Is it a must have?

Anyhow, I ran across instructions on how to create this interesting cheesehead carved to look like Steve Jobs. I am not too sure about the accuracy of the carving but the resemblance is there somewhere. That’s actually the least of my concerns. Is it just me or is this whole set up NOT palatable at all?

I am sorry – I know the person who created this is an Apple fanboy and a passionate foodie. I bet he was all excited about the project – and probably still is. I just can’t imagine digging into a plate of nachos with THIS head right in the middle of everything!

I have to give it to Ken – his creativity knows no bounds. I think I will pass on the cheesehead, though.

You’ll need:
2 vanilla pods
500ml double cream
70g sugar
3 egg yolks
How to make it:
1. Cut each vanilla pod down its length and extract the precious seeds. Add the pods only (not the seeds) to the cream and boil it.
2. When the mixture is boiling, add the sugar and stir.
3. Find a large bowl and whisk three egg yolks.
4. Stir the double cream mixture into the egg yolks.
5. Now take the mixture and pour it into another bowl, through a sieve.
6. Stir in the precious vanilla seeds.
7. Find a dish suitable for the freezer, and place the mixture in the freezer.
8. Wait 2-3 hours.
9. Take the ice cream out of the freezer. Take a flat knife and chisel the Apple logo into the top of the frozen ice cream. Announce it to your guests with the phrase, “One more thing…”

Up there’s the recipe from Crave, which apparently is part of Steve Jobs’ effort to get better after his much talked about illness. I wish I could be given these kinds of recipes for health reasons as well!

If your chosen Apple fan isn’t visibly delighted with a mini-Steve, then he or she is either lying, or isn’t as much of an Applehead as you thought.

In that case you could mention that it’s great to “cuddle up with him and pretend he’s whispering corporate secrets in your ear”, that “Jobs enjoys hanging out with your other stuffed animals” or that “he thinks it would be very nice to live at your house”.

The cruel inferior-operating-system-loving practical jokers among you could always create a little flap in Plush Jobs’ back so that, over time, you can take bits of his stuffing out and then comment on how thin Steve’s been looking recently.

Not that I’d condone it unless you enjoy being beaten up by a rabid iPhone-wielding nutcase (that’d be me again).

Apple’s Let’s Rock event has finished and Steve Jobs did not disappoint in announcing new revamps in its mammoth bestseller iPod line.

The announcements have been across the board with all of the iPod products. First is that the iPod Classic now has just a single model, the 120GB. The new model though is much slender from its previous incarnation.

The biggest change is in the iPod Nano line, which gets a radical new form factor. The speculations about the Nano have been largely spot-on. It’s now rectangular with a portrait screen. It can also detect when the player is titled allowing people to view movies from a widescreen viewing ratio. The Nano also incorporate the new Genius feature that was introduced in iTunes 8. This allows for making playlists on the fly. Oh, and voice recording is now a standard feature for the Nano, which makes it so useful for students who want to record their teacher’s lectures.

The iPod Touch also gets some new features like the aforementioned Genius playlist, built-in speakers, new built-in apps and Nike Plus support. I was hoping for capacity upgrades to the Touch line but, sadly, this did not happen.
