The Lord of the Rings, Starring The Beatles

What do you get when The Beatles express their desire to star in a Lord of the Rings movie? Off the top of my head – something that will push you over the edge, either because you think it’s hilarious or you are having a WTF moment. The guys at Super Punch decided to hold an art contest last month featuring Stanley Kubrick’s Lord of the Rings, Starring the Beatles. The result? A mixture of those two reactions I mentioned above.

Apparently, The Beatles once were interested to be part of an LotR production. According to John at Super Punch, this is what happened:

Once upon a time, The Beatles were interested in starring in a live-action version of The Lord of the Rings with Paul McCartney as Frodo Baggins, Ringo Starr as Sam Gamgee, George Harrison as Gandalf, and John Lennon as Gollum. They asked Stanley Kubrick to direct, but he declined (according to Wikipedia), or Tolkien killed the idea (according to Peter Jackson).

Building on the idea, John (the blogger, not the dead Beatle) decided to hold the contest, and here are some of the more eye catching entries.

The iconic album cover takes on a totally new look. I think that the bystander should have been included, though.

Now I am not sure what to think of this one. What’s your verdict?

Compared to the first two, this drawing is way simple, but it does catch your eye, doesn’t it? Moreover, you’ll find the song playing in your head over and over again.

It just gets weirder and weirder. ;)

Google Doodle Says Happy 70th Birthday to John Lennon

Who doesn’t look forward to those Google Doodles? Every time they come up with something new, we all can’t help but notice the Doodle. Today, Google pays tribute to the great John Lennon, who has influenced many a life – both while he was alive and now that he’s gone.

I’ve never been that big a John Lennon fan, but I have to say that I have spent many a working day tripping to The Beatles. Indeed, upon seeing the Google Doodle today, I have been listening non-stop to The Beatles (as opposed to my daily music list).

John Lennon’s 70^th birthday Doodle is easily one of my favorites.

That may seem simple and nothing out of the ordinary, but click on the play button, and I bet you’ll be yearning to hear more of The Beatles today. (Yup, this is another one of Google’s interactive Doodles!)

On another note, what do you say to listing down the best Beatles songs to listen to while working? For me, the most inspiring songs (read: they get the writing juices flowing) are:

Beatles Rock Band release day will also be D-Day for Beatles remastered albums

I remember being stoked about the announcement of The Beatles: Rock Band game that will be released on September 9. Being a longtime fan of the The Beatles I knew that this was a game that I will want to have. What made the game doubly interesting is that the songs in the game will be remastered versions of the originals. As Beatles fans well know, The Beatles catalogue has yet to be given a remastering treatment. The closest we got was the Love Soundtrack for the Cirque de Soleil show. It has remained unreleased up to now despite a clamor from fans.

But that wait is now over. Apple Corps has announced that the entire Beatles catalog will be remixed and rereleased on the same day as the Rock Band game. Along with this, there will be two new Beatles CD box sets to be released on that day. This is the greatest music news I’ll probably get the whole year. All 12 studio albums will be released along with Magical Mystery Tour and a combo disc that contains two Past Masters releases.

The remixes will now turn the old Beatles albums to glorious stereo. But no worries for purists — The Beatles in Mono box set will also be made available.

I’m going to start saving up today for these absolutely wonderful releases.

Rock Band: The Beatles will feature previously unreleased material

A cursory look at what I usually blog about would immediately reveal how much I love music rhythm games. I am literally obsessed with it. Being a huge Beatles fan (one of my ultimate goals as a dad is to turn my children on to The Beatles) I was really quite excited when Harmonix announced Rock Band: The Beatles. I think it was a product aimed squarely at me. I always consider this upcoming game a coup for Harmonix and MTV Games because it is so hard to get permission to use The Beatles’ work for anything. The idea alone of playing to actual recordings of The Beatles is reason enough to buy the game when it comes out.

But with a new announcement from The Beatles’ camp fans will have further reason to go grab the game when it arrives. According to Dhani Harrison, the son of George Harrison, the game will also include previously unreleased material. He was quoted as saying that the song selections will include tunes that “has never been heard, never been released.” Harrison did not reveal any other details about this but he did say that the game will be historically accurate.

Rock Band: The Beatles will arrive on September 9 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii platforms. The standalone game will be offered at $59.99, while the full band bundle will be at $249.99. The bundle will feature a new drum set, guitar and microphone that’s modeled after The Beatles’ instruments.
