With the movie only five months away, Hunger Games fever is at an all-time high right now. Pictured: the all-important “Mockingjay” symbol from the books and the film.
The Smurfs

God help us all, The Smurfs was one of this year’s biggest box office hits — for kiddie flicks, that is. Here’s Smurfette, the one and only girl Smurf. (Seriously, how does the species procreate with only one female? Must be a “queen bee” kind of thing…) [Source]

Steve Jobs #1

I couldn’t resist including two Steve Jobs tributes after seeing how amazing both of these are. First up: a spot-on recreation of the late Apple creator, all lit up at night. [Source]

Steve Jobs #2

The second tribute I came across uses the same photo as its source, but generates a completely different result by applying the methods of a true sculptor. Here’s how it looks in the dark.
Thor

Thor pumpkin carving

Fantastic rendition of Thor’s hammer, from this summer’s blockbuster movie (and the comic book, of course). Also see this photo of it glowing. [Source]

Transformers

Transformers pumpkin carving

Not sure, but I think that’s Shockwave, who was of course one of the big baddies in this summer’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.
The Walking Dead

The infamous “Bicycle Girl” from the pilot episode of AMC’s mega-hot zombie apocalypse series, which just entered its second season.

Marvel dropped the Avengers teaser trailer on us yesterday, and it’s looking awesome. But it goes by way too fast for my taste, so I took fifty high-res screengrabs to really get the full effect. Magnanimous guy that I am, I’m sharing them with you. You’re welcome.

Hearing Joss Whedon’s witty dialogue coming out of Robert Downey Jr.’s mouth is a match made in Heaven. Writer/director Whedon does get lots of accolades for his written words, but the average viewer might not realize that he’s got an incredible eye as a director, always creating killer action scenes. Go back and watch some of the episodes of Buffy that Whedon directed, and you’ll see the most original, dynamic action scenes from the entire series. I noticed several of his visual trademarks in these quick-cut scenes: iconic/heroic poses (some of these shots look like they could be comic book covers), lens flares (hi there, Firefly fans!), and lots of moving cameras (which made it hard to get clear screengrabs).

He just gets “cool” (check out that wave of destruction rolling through an NYC street early in the trailer — that’s not CGI!), while never losing sight of the emotional heart of a story. And his instincts as a storyteller are always spot-on. So seeing him get to play in a playground this big is something his fans (yes I’m a Whedon fanboy and proud of it) have been waiting a long time to see. Based on this trailer, I’m ready to get in line now.

Enjoy the screens! Click on any image for a high-resolution (1440×790) version.

Based on this leaked in-game footage, it looks like a studio owned by THQ was hip-deep in development on a video game tie-in to next summer’s The Avengers movie. But the game has been seemingly canceled since THQ shuttered the studio last month. Sad news made all the sadder once you watch the awesomeness on display in the video.

The footage, based on a pre-Alpha build of the proposed game, shows some fairly detailed looks at the fighting styles of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk. THQ’s Brisbane, Australia studio was going to put gamers in the first-person shoes of these most powerful of superheroes, but since none of them use guns, the interface was translated with their hands and arms on-screen a la Mirror’s Edge.

It looks like it would work a lot better than I may be making it sound. Cap carries (and throws) his shield, Thor has his trusty hammer, Iron Man shoots blasts from his fists and all sorts of other gadgetry, and Hulk uses those beefy, green arms of his to smash everything in sight. The video also shows off a number of environments, including the streets of New York, the SHIELD Helicarrier, the Avengers’ “Triskelion” homebase, a Skrull mothership (longtime alien enemies of the Avengers who are rumored to be in the film), and more. Everything you can see in the vid looks pretty sweet. I guess we should make that bittersweet if the game’s been canceled, though.

Watch this video quick — it’ll be pulled from YouTube any time now. (When it does disappear, you may be able to find mirrors by searching YouTube for “THQ Avengers.”)

As early as now, Hot Toys has announced something that will delight any toy collector. Even I, who cannot be called one, am rather excited about the toys.

Take a look.

Hot Toys decided to make figures from three movies, with two characters from each movie. Iron Man and Tony Stark, Loki and Thor, and Red Skull and Captain America. It’s a no brainer which ones I like the most!

Even at 1/6th scale, Iron Man’s (and Tony Stark’s) appeal is not diminished one bit! If anything, these cosbabies just make the characters more adorable!

Here are Thor and Loki.

And Captain America and Red Skull.

Hot Toys – a Hong Kong-based company – has not announced the date of release and pricing yet, but monitor their Facebook page to find out when their worldwide distributors will carry the figures.

By now, countless people have seen Thor. While the official release is still May the 6th in the US, other parts of the world have already been queuing up over the weekend to see the much awaited movie. Sad to say, I was not one of them. Don’t get me wrong – I very much wanted to go to the movies yesterday but it just didn’t happen.

Anyway, if you have not heard of the duo Angie and Chad, it’s about time that you did. I actually discovered them earlier this year when I came across their video “I Am Optimus Prime“. I didn’t really like the parody overall, although the lyrics of the song cracked me up.

This time, I found myself laughing even more – and yes, I’d go as far as to say that the entire video is funny! The song is a parody of Usher’s song, which is titled More. I’ve never heard this song, but the tune is kind of catchy.

Now a word of warning – this is a parody and is meant for pure silliness. Hardcore Thor fans might turn their noses up all throughout the video, but if the comments on YouTube are any indication, male viewers will have something else to appreciate. Enjoy. ;)

If you want to see other parodies by this duo, check out their YouTube channel: ScreenTeam.

Mass Effect 3. Elder Scrolls 5. Forza 4. Uncharted 3. Prototype 2. Resistance 3. Batman: Arkham City. SSX. And a certain Guillermo del Toro game…

Spike’s Video Game Awards aired over the weekend, and while few gamers or industry insiders consider the awards themselves to be all that prestigious, the industry does always take the opportunity to unveil a slew of new games for the coming year with fancy, big-budget trailers. Which are always much bigger news than the award winners. So here are some of the biggest games you have to look forward to next year.

Start saving up now.

(Note that most of these trailers are intended for mature audiences.)

One of the biggest nobody-saw-it-coming surprises of the night was the announcement of Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Check out the trailer for an explanation of what that title means, but don’t expect to see any gameplay footage.

Batman: Arkham City isn’t news, but the VGAs got a brand-spanking-new, intensely cool trailer that reveals who the game’s main villain is. Again, no gameplay footage, but who cares when you get a mini Batman action movie of this caliber?

It’s a surprise to no one that Mass Effect 3 was officially announced, but this trailer for what is presumably the final act of Commander Shepard’s story is suitably dark and exciting.

Sega showed off its first gameplay trailer for its tie-in game to Marvel’s Thor movie. Entitled Thor: God of Thunder, it looks a lot like God of War.

Speaking of Kratos, he’s been added to the roster for the new Mortal Kombat, as revealed in this new spot:

Here’s a new trailer for Resistance 3, which according to this video, is coming September 6th 2011.

Another major announcement: Prototype 2. This time, you play as a new guy with the same powers who sets out to track down the main character from the first game.

Remember that game that Guillermo del Toro said he was working on with THQ? And THQ was like, “We don’t know what he’s been smoking,” and del Toro was like “Oh no they didn’t…” Okay, I made up that last one. But surprise surprise: THQ was full of it, ’cause the game is real. It’s called inSane, and it’s a horror game from Volition. That’s all we know about it. Watch this teaser if you don’t believe me.

Forza Motorsport 4 is officially official. Here’s the first teaser.

After a very long absence, the SSX snowboarding franchise is making a buzzed-about return. SSX: Deadly Descents is taking a turn toward survival, as it pits a team of snowboarders against some of the most dangerous real-world peaks in the world. Extreme sports + extreme environments = extreme survival.

Last but certainly not least, here’s the first full trailer for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. It’s mostly pre-rendered stuff focusing on the story (story is always king in the Uncharted universe, which is fine by me), but watch closely for a few glimpses of gameplay footage at the very end.

So this week Tom DeFalco has returned to one of his old creations with Thunderstrike, and for me this is a return to some of the older more innocent style comics. Well, as much as one can perceive from a first issue. It’s nice to see Kevin Masterson again even if he has turned into the ultimate brat, and also nice to see an Asgardian title that isn’t all ‘Woe is me, Asgard has fallen’.

I’m not saying this is the pinnacle of comic story-telling, far from it, but it is enjoyable, and a welcome return for a character missed by many.

Speaking of returns however, Dynamite have continued their tradition of relaunching characters with Vampirella. If doesn’t seem so long since Vampirella: The Second Coming slightly redefined what the nature of our favourite vampiress is, and now we have a newer version.

This issue does not redefine anything, Vampirella could be from Drakulon, a goddess manifesting through her followers blood or the daughter of Lilith, who knows. That has very little relevance to this story, which is atmospheric and implies some of the previous continuity. We are told that Vampi had a mortal lover, who died. This could be Adam, or some other story yet to be told. Yet what is important here is not even the story itself, which when analysed is little more than any other vampire story, but the mood that is established. Far grittier than the old Harris run of the Nineties, far more city based with less fantastical elements, this issue has everything that the recent Vampire PA seemed to lack. And the back-up strip re-printed from years ago, of Archie Goodwin’s relationship with Vampi is not to be missed.

One other title I want to draw your attention to, though it’s hardly a first issue, is Dynamite’s Warlord Of Mars. Maybe it’s the art, maybe it’s the fact it does not rush into the story, mixing elements of the Wild West with Barsoomian (Martian) culture, as the stories of John Carter and Tars Tarkas are told separately before their first meeting. Reading the recent second issue (so it’s not too late to jump on) reminded me of why, all those years ago reading the classics of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tars Tarkas to me defined what an honourable hero truly is. This title brings back all of those memories, in fresh, vivid colour.

Still, it was not disappointing in the slightest, I don’t want to offer any spoilers, but Thanos is up there in the uber-villain stakes again. My appetite is highly whetted for the sequel – The Thanos Imperative Devastation, as there are so many plotlines that have been left hanging during this event, and others that may well spiral out of it. How long will it be before Medusa is actually Queen of the universe, as her empire ‘assists’ the rebuilding effort? And what did happen to Vulcan and Black Bolt?

Sticking in the realm of the mega-event crossovers, Chaos War: Thor #1 was also released this week, and I have to confess I am impressed. A step aside from the gods measuring their mutual omnipotences against one another, Thor is cast from the battle and lands, well, somewhere, without his memory, where he is helped by a woman who moved to her family holiday home to mourn her deceased family. DeMatteis’ writing really manages to call into question the necessity for either gods or faith in a non-too-preachy fashion, leaving the reader with a few questions that may actually affect their real world lives.

As for where Thor is, well, isn’t everyone dreaming? What’s this woman doing here? Is this a dream? Is it the Land Of The Dead? I don’t know, but it enhances the value of the crossover above just that of a huge slug-fest. Too many super-hero titles seem to be in slug-fest season right now, so this is a nice change of pace.

The best treat I have found this week however has to be the relaunch of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents. Now I am too young to remember when the original series graced our news-stands but I was lucky enough to get hold of some issues a few years back. I rather think that Wally Wood would be proud.

This is one of those first issues that is a treat, rather than the standard fare, with multi-layered storytelling that does not thrust the characters origins down our throat. In fact, the central characters barely make an appearance until the last few pages, but we are given a full tour of the world they are emerging into. Either for lovers of the original series (and the many attempts of a relaunch since then), or for fans of series such as Checkmate or Suicide Squad, this will be a delight.

Update 2: Sigh… It would appear that the powers that be have issued their usual cease-and-desist orders. Bummer. The trailer seriously rocked. I know it was a Comic-Con exclusive, but I can’t imagine why Marvel wouldn’t want it to be seen by pretty much everybody, now that the Con is over. Shall we hope for the best and think that maybe they’re preparing to release it on the Net on their own terms? (Even though it’s more likely that Thor himself cannot withstand the mighty hammer of the lawyers?)

It would be an understatement to say that mankind has had a fascination with gods for quite for quite some time, but it really seems to have come to the fore recently.

Now I’m not just talking about the most obvious example here, being Siege, but come on. Two special issues mourning the death of Hercules, <**SPOILER ALERT**> only to find out he is not dead after all?

Still, there’s the upcoming Hercules Prince Of Power series advertised, so I doubt there is a secret there. If you don’t remember the original two Prince Of Power mini-series, they are worth digging out. Set in an alternate future, Herc has a Skrull sidekick called Skyppi and is the last of the Olympian gods remaining in this realm, tasked with siring the next generation of gods.

There are other views of the gods however. In Avatar’s Supergod by Warren Ellis, we are treated to how man-made gods can become something far beyond our control. Not an unusual theme in comics or science-fiction, and a metaphor that is entirely transparent, but of course, this is Mr Ellis, and therefore top notch entertainment. You can feel the rage of the unleashed beasts as the world falls to pieces around them. Or rather is smashed to pieces by them, as simply an afterthought.

Not comparable to our own monsters of media, free market or finance giants at all. Any similarity is purely coincidental.

On a far more fun note, God Complex from Image is far more reminiscent of the glory days of Kirby in the Eternals or the New Gods, with a more down-to-earth twist. Michael Avon Oeming’s first issue did not receive the greatest of reviews, as he continued the transition from artist (of Powers) to writer of his own material, but now he has reached the fourth issue of the series it has a certain charm, and I think will translate very well into trade paperback format. Focusing on Apollo (a god that I have always been surprised that writers haven’t played with more), this god has left his pantheon, and his family is less than happy about it.

So the over-story is not that original, Thor did it decades ago. The strong point of the series are those little moments of humanity, which play very well, contrasting human desire with moments of perfect stillness. A ideal read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Chris Hemsworth, aka James T. Kirk’s dad in last year’s Star Trek, is starring in Marvel Studios’ big-budget adaptation of Thor, for director Kenneth Branagh. Hemsworth appears alongside a killer cast that includes Anthony Hopkins as Thor’s father Odin, Natalie Portman as his human love interest Jane, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, and Tom Hiddleston as the villainous god of mischief Loki.

The movie is filming as we speak, and is scheduled to hit theaters next summer. Hemsworth will reprise his role alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America for Joss Whedon’s 2012 team-up The Avengers.

Anyhoo, whether or not an actor is accepted in any iconic role always comes down to how he or she looks, and how their acting choices translate to interpreting the character on screen. It’ll be a while before we see Hemsworth in action, but Yahoo! Movies has today provided our first look at Hemsworth in the title role:

Looks like Thor to me! I love the lighting and composition of this shot, I dig Hemsworth’s hair and beard, and I appreciate that the costume is following the more recent comic book “armored” look rather than the older look that showed more skin. I don’t think we could hope for anything better than this in interpreting Thor live-action.

I’m having warm fuzzy feelings towards this movie now. What about you?

Choirs of fanboys singing.

This might be the greatest news to ever come out of geekdom. Joss Whedon, one of the most celebrated and respected (and geeky) wordsmiths of our time, is going to be directing Marvel Studios’ big-budget superhero mashup, The Avengers. As you probably know, The Avengers is combining the stars of Marvel’s various superhero pics — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Nick Fury — into star-studded blockbuster film. Whedon landing this gig is on the same level as JJ Abrams being handed the keys to the Enterprise, and everybody knows how amazing that turned out.

Whedon is best known as the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and writer of Astonishing X-Men, though he also served as a bigshot Hollywood script doctor before hitting it big with his own properties, doing uncredited rewrites on films like Speed, and helping to give voices to Woody and Buzz Lightyear in the first Toy Story. His singular talent for writing original, clever dialogue has helped give his work its distinct flair, and he’ll be doing a rewrite on the existing Avengers script. As a director, he handled many episodes of his own TV shows, as well as the big screen filmSerenity. Anyone who saw Whedon’s directorial efforts on his TV shows knows that he has a profound talent for using the camera as another communication tool, as well as a strong eye for wicked cool action sequences.

Just imagine hearing Whedon’s dialogue coming out of the mouths of Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)! Also joining the cast will be Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Edward Norton reprising his role as the Incredible Hulk. It almost seems too good to be true that Marvel would entrust its most important property and biggest stars to someone like Joss Whedon; he has infinite amounts of geek cred, but no established box office bankability.

But you can take this to the bank: Whedon doesn’t know how to tell a bad story, so assuming there’s not too much studio interference or bloated actor egos on the set, The Avengers is going to be something special when it arrives summer 2012.

The long hunt is finally over. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next person to play Captain America in Marvel’s latest project is Chris Evans. How do you know him? Well, he’s “that guy” from Not Another Teen Movie, the lead character in Push, and of course, the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four Series. From the article:

Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel’s offer, first detailed on Friday, but that the dealmaking moved so fast it’s now all about dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.

Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which reps the actor, declined comment.

Evans was offered the role in Marvel Studios’ production last week, but there was some question of whether he would accept. Factoring in to the choice was the fact that Evans played Johnny Storm, the flame-covered superhero known as the Human Torch in Fox’s “Fantastic Four” movies. Was he ready to play another superhero and take on the trappings that come with such a high-profile part?

This is a big casting, because the good ol’ Cap is going to be the lead in Captain America and the Avengers movie, so we’ll be seeing a lot of this guy. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if he made a cameo at the end of the credits for Iron Man 2.

So how do they handle the Human Torch/Cap America situation? Personally, I hate when people cross over comic books, a la Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine and the upcoming Green Lantern flick, because it takes us out of the universe. It makes it much less real, when ultimately, that’s what Marvel is trying to do – create a movie universe in parallel with the comic multiverse. On the other end, the Fantastic Four movies sucked pretty hard, and there’s little hope that they’ll be coming back to do a third flick. If they do, they’re going to have to recast Johnny Storm, but I’d be willing to bet that Jessica Alba wasn’t coming back either.

What’re your thoughts? Think this is a good casting or should they have gone with someone else like Ryan Phillippe?

Here we are, 2010, and the next few years are looking good for Marvel’s franchise. Thor is 2011, as is Captain America, and the following year, The Avengers. First though, we have Iron Man 2, which is going to lay some more of the groundwork for the Avengers movie. And of course, there’s a new trailer online. Two words: Suitcase. Armor. Download it in 1080P for full HD viewing, or just check out the smaller iPod versions. Either way, take a peek, because it’s awesome.

Being a film geek I’m not one to really get excited too much about Hollywood movies but the news that esteemed British thespian and accomplished director Kenneth Branagh will helm the new Thor movie really go me excited. This is a guy who’s not a hack and comes from the “art film” set. The thought of him doing a comicbook hero movie is just so cool in my book.

Of course, for many people who will get to play Thor is more important than who will get to direct it. There have been a lot of names thrown around lately on who will most perrfectly fill the role of the God of War — Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Karl Urban. One guy I know even wanted Triple H from the WWE. But Branagh seems to also have made that choice already. Reportedly, the director is already in talks with actor Alexander Skarsgard to play the role of Thor. Alexander Skarsgard is the son of Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia), and he is most well known for starring in both HBO series Generation Kill and True Blood.

I think Branagh is making the perfect casting choice here. Skarsgard looks the part (he just needs to hit the gym pronto) and is even from Sweden so the Scandinavian/Nordic connection is even present. I hope this pushes through.

But what about you guys? Who do you think would be perfect for Thor? And since we’re talking about casting choices, who do you think will be perfect to play the part of Loki? Recent rumors has it that Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down) is being seriously considered for the role.

It seems that every year more and more comic books and graphic novels are making the passage from the page to the big screen. Hollywood has cottoned on that not only are these art forms quite often full of great stories but they come complete with an already made fan base who will flock to the silver screen to see their heroes brought to life.

It is with this passion in mind that I’ve pulled together a list of forthcoming (and in one case now out) movies that originated in a comic book or graphic novel.

Punisher: War Zone

Date: Now

The only film in this entire listing that is now available for viewing (it was only released here in the UK on Friday); it’s safe to say that unless you’re a die-hard fan then you are probably going to be okay about missing this. It isn’t to say that Ray Stevenson does a bad job at being Frank Castle or that jigsaw doesn’t look cool, but the action is fairly derivative and to be honest I preferred Thomas Jane’s outing as the man with the black t-shirt featuring the white skull motif.

Website – Trailer – Rotten Tomatoes Review

Watchmen

Arguably one of the most eagerly awaited titles for all geeks this year, Watchmen brings to the big screen a graphic novel featuring an epic story, flawed characters, moral dilemmas and superheroes without powers. The story is set in the 1980’s and the ‘Doomsday Clock’ is set to 5 minutes to midnight, so tensions are running high between the US and the USSR. Rorschach (a masked vigilante) investigates the murder of hero, only to discover the plot gets much thicker.

Alan Moore’s graphic novel of the same name should provide excellent material – but my top tip for this one is to read it in its original form before going to see the film. Whilst Moore won’t have anything to do with the movie adaptation, I’m fairly certain that everything we’ve seen so far is showing that this is going to be quite faithful in look and feel – but perhaps most importantly will offer a lot even for those who don’t know of the graphic novel.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Date: 1 May 2009

Wolverine proved very quickly to be one of the most popular characters following the screen adaptation of the X-men comic book, so it should be no surprise that his movie comes out first. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the eponymous character, meanwhile we see a host of other characters appear from the Marvel/X-Men universe including Deadpool, Sabretooth (Liev Schriber), Silver Fox, Gambit, The Blob and more. Should you be excited? Oh yes, the action looks great and I’m expecting big things after the frankly poor X-Men: The Last Stand

Thor

Date: 16 July 2010

I’m a bit baffled why Kenneth Branagh is going to be directing Thor, but there we are. The plot is apparently going to feature Dr Donald Blake – a disabled physician who has an alter ego inside of him – none other than The Mighty Thor! For me, this one could go either way. I’m hoping that it isn’t too far out there, but as it is quite a while away I didn’t find too much info out on it. More info as it comes but I’ve heard a range of names mentioned for the role of Thor, including wrestler Triple H!

Sin City 2

Date: 2010

Unfortunately still listed in preproduction (so whether it will make 2010 is debateable) but the best received graphic novel to hit the big screen barring 300 was Sin City. Should the sequel live up to the original then this should definitely be a film on your list. This title is also known as ‘A Dame To Kill For’ and covers the story of the same name along with an unshelved Nancy Story and some short stories. It will return with the same look and feel and no doubt excellent action set pieces. Definitely one to see.

The First Avenger: Captain America

Date: 2011

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America’s ideals. There’s talk of this being a period piece, which could be quite interesting. The title indicates that this may well be the first of several Avenger films – though whether you like your superheroes on their own or all together may decide on how you’ll view such a film. I’m not a big fan of Cap but I am going to withhold judgement until we’ve seen a little more.

Iron Man 2

Date: 2010

Marvel Studios completely self-financed Iron Man, and I’m fairly sure that they are quite happy that they did so, given that it was such as resounding success. In the sequel, Robert Downey Jr returns to play Tony Stark in what appears to be a role he was born to play. Still not sure on the plot of this one, but there has been talk of Whiplash/Backlash as well as Crimson Dynamo. Don Cheadle is in whilst Terrance Howard is out for the role of War Machine/Jim Rhodes.

Other Films Of Note Coming Soon:

Super Max (2010) – Green Arrow
Green Lantern (2010)
Ant-Man (2010)
Dead of Night (2009) – Dylan Dog
Spider-Man 4
