Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and that means it’s time to celebrate the love that couples share with each other. Anime is full of couples, some of them fight, others fell in love at first sight, but all of them are deeply in love. Here are 14 couples whose love is so strong that you know they will be together for all eternity. (Note: due to the nature of the topic, there are some spoilers in this article.)
1. Usagi x Mamoru (Sailor Moon)
Some of you may be more familiar with their English names, Serena and Darien, but Usagi and Mamoru from Sailor Moon is one of the biggest couples from the 90’s. Although their relationship got off to a rocky start, they were lovers in a previous life and were destined for each other. Their love for each other is so strong that even a millennium into the future, they are still together.
2. Nagisa x Tomoya (Clannad)
Meeting Nagisa was a life-changing experience for Tomoya, and likewise, it was the same for Nagisa. Neither of them really fit into the school life with Tomoya being a delinquent and Nagisa a well-natured girl that missed a year of school. They complimented each other so well, Tomoya became a family man and Nagisa gained more confidence. It’s no wonder Tomoya never forgot Nagisa even when he was left alone with Ushio in After Story.
3. Belldandy x Keiichi (Ah! My Goddess)
When the goddess Belldandy offered Keiichi one wish, he wasn’t serious when he asked her to stay with him forever, but sometimes love just happens without even thinking about it. These two are so close together that not even the heavens could tear them apart. As a further sign of their love for each other, the manga is now over 25 years old and still ongoing. Belldandy and Keiichi have out-lasted countless couples in real-world time.
4. Taiga x Ryuuji (Toradora)
Opposites attract, and that’s the perfect description of Taiga and Ryuuji from Toradora. Taiga is a very petit girl that has been nicknamed the “Palmtop Tiger” for her aggressive personality. Ryuuji, the “Dragon” is tall and has a menacing face, but is actually a nice guy that wouldn’t hurt a fly. It’s hard to believe these two actually fell in love, especially considering Taiga tried to kill Ryuuji a couple of times, but they were inseparable once they did.
5. Kagome x Inuyasha (Inuyasha)
If you thought maintaining a long-distance relationship was hard, imagine maintaining a long-era relationship. Kagome and Inuyasha live several centuries apart, but that doesn’t stop them from being together. While Inuyasha does have some lingering feelings towards Kikyo, which was who Kagome was in her previous life, those feelings disappear towards the end of the series. Kagome and Inuyasha’s love is certainly one that stretches across time.
6. Miaka x Tamahome (Fushigi Yuugi / The Mysterious Play)
Another couple whose love stretches across time and space is that of Miaka and Tamahome. Despite many characters trying to get in the way of their love and the fact that Tamahome lives inside a fictional book while Miaka lives in the real world, nothing can keep them apart. Their love for each other is so strong that it even overcomes the destruction of the world.
7. Sawako x Shouta (Kimi ni Todoke / From Me to You)
At first glance, Sawako and Shouta seem to be an unlikely couple. Sawako is an outcast with no friends despite her friendly nature, and Shouta is the talk of the school due to his popularity, good looks, and physical abilities. The two of them actually fell in love at first sight without realizing it and were able to come together even with others trying to get in the way.
8. Sana x Akito (Kodomo no Omocha / Child’s Toy)
Is there anything more pure than first loves? Sana and Akito is another couple that got off to a rocky start. Akito often made fun of Sana, much like how other boys his age make fun of girls they like, but eventually their true feelings for each other came out.
9. Chihiro x Renji (ef series)
We’ve already gone through a few couples whose love has stretched across lifetimes, but that is nothing compared to Chihiro and Renji. Chihiro suffers from anterograde amnesia; she cannot remember anything beyond 13 hours ago. Whenever she wakes up in the morning, it’s like she’s living as a new person, so imagine the difficulty she had remembering who Renji is. Despite this condition, their love still remains even after Chihiro spends more than 13 hours apart from Renji.
10. Kurisu x Rintarou (Steins;Gate)
You can imagine that people are different in parallel worlds, but the love between Kurisu and Rintarou is the same across all worlds. Rintarou loves Kurisu so much that he travels across countless world lines and spends countless years trying to save her from an untimely death. Even if it means that Kurisu won’t remember Rintarou he’ll do anything it takes to protect her, and as I said before, their love is true across all worlds.
11. Naru x Keitaro (Love Hina)
Childhood promises of marriage are a common theme in anime and Naru and Keitaro really bring that to the fore in Love Hina. As with some other couples, they got off to a rocky start with Naru launching Keitaro into space with her super punch nearly every episode. The promise that Keitaro has to the girl from his childhood is always on his mind though, and it was only a matter of time before he and Naru discover and overcome the truth of the childhood promise.
12. Asuna x Kirito (Sword Art Online)
Asuna and Kirito is probably the first big-name anime couple to meet inside a video game. But when you can die for real inside that video game everything suddenly becomes real, even love. In the face of adversity and despair, these two were able to find something beautiful and were able to overcome the laws of the virtual world.
13. Hitomi x Van (Escaflowne)
Hitomi is just a regular high school girl and Van is the young prince of Fanelia on the world of Gaea. When Van travels to Earth to defeat a dragon, Hitomi is caught up in the matter and transported to Gaea with Van. The two of them may not have seen eye to eye at first, but with their destinies intertwined and their strong connection to each other, it’s hard to keep love out of the picture. Despite being from two completely different worlds, these two will likely be together forever.
14. Sakura x Syaoran (Card Captor Sakura and Tsubasa Chronicles)
One of the most easily identifiable couples in anime is Sakura and Syaoran. They originally met as rivals in Card Captor Sakura, but they soon grew feelings towards each other, culminating in a confession from Sakura at the end of their battle with the Hope card. The strength of their love is so powerful that it stretches across time and space in Tsubasa Chronicles, going so far as to break the laws of the universe. No matter the time, place, or circumstance, Sakura and Syaoran will always love each other.
