5 (+1) Game of Thrones Characters We Hate To Love
In Westeros, there are no heroes or villains. There are victors. There are victims. But across these lands, everyone is the hero of their own story. Game of Thrones fans all have their favorite characters, but what about the ones that we’re supposed to hate yet can’t help but love anyway? Whether it’s their cunning, their skill at the game, or their penchant for hacking off heads, there’s something about the following characters that draws us in.
April 6, 2014 is less than a month away. While we’re preparing for the much-awaited premiere of season 4 of Game of Thrones, it’s time to marathon every episode and take a look back at the characters we secretly love but publicly despise.
#5 Arya Stark
Little Arya is definitely straying away from the path that the Stark family would have wanted for her. Consumed with the thirst for revenge, Arya has already killed more than once and if she could have her way, she’d off every single person in her list. It’s a bit of a stretch to say that we should hate her, so that’s why we named her our #5 pick.
#4 Jamie ‘Kingslayer’ Lannister
The Kingslayer was a tricky one to place. Way back when he pushed Bran off the tower in season 1, the decision to hate him was a no-brainer. Now we’re starting to have doubts. His growth as a character is fascinating and we can’t help but root for him now. If all a man had to do was lose a hand to gain a conscience, then we’d be seeing many one-handed reformed baddies.
#3 Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane
The Hound has had quite the journey. He began as just a thug (okay, bodyguard) for the Lannisters, became a member of the Kingsguard, and is currently the babysitter of a Stark girl. Well, he was a babysitter before said Stark girl left him under a tree. He may be bloodthirsty, but he stood up to his brother, saved Sansa from being raped, and is a general badass. He’s a monster with a beating heart and we can’t help but feel sympathy for him.
#2 Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish
I’m biased, but Littlefinger has got to be my favorite character. He is just the definition of cunning and manipulative and no one plays the game better than he does, though our #1 pick comes very close. He came from nothing, had his love taken away from him (twice!), but still found a way to become Lord of the Vale. No one truly knows how many steps ahead of everyone else he is, not even us fans.
#1 Tywin Lannister
He is the king who never needed a crown. Why would he need one when he’s already the wealthiest and arguably the most powerful man in Westeros? Everyone already knows who’s the real ruler of the kingdoms. He’s ruthless and cruel, but we can’t help but admire him. House Lannister was in danger of becoming nothing but a speck in the history books but he turned it all around and made them one of the greatest families. No one looks and acts more kingly than Tywin does and he is simply a badass in every single way.
Bonus: Ramsay Bolton
Don’t you dare call him Ramsay Snow. The poster child for Stockholm Syndrome, Ramsay is a character that simply captivates. We never thought we’d get to meet someone who was technically more evil than Joffrey, but not as hated. Maybe it’s because he hasn’t had the same amount of screentime as the bastard king (I don’t think I could stomach it he had Joffrey’s screentime) but only time will tell. If someone as horrible as Roose Bolton thinks he has a problem, then maybe it’s best to take several steps back.
