When people think video games, they often think about gruff space marines running around shooting generic looking aliens with cliche’ plasma rifles. And they would be right. Games have gotten cliche’ as hell. But in the same breath, some games are self aware how lame they are and have some fun with it. It’s true. In betweem games taking themselves way too seriously, there have been some incredibly funny video games over the years that people have been all but forgotten, ignored, or under-recognized. People don’t often associate humor with this medium, but they are off in that assumption (as this list will prove). Keep in mind, video games cover some very different styles of humor, from toilet to self-aware and satirical. This list will try to cover as vast a comedic game array as possible. Here are the 5 funniest fucking video games ever made, yo.
A Bard’s Tale
How about we talk about this old RPG (PS2 and PC I believe) where the narrator was aware you were in a trite RPG and reminded you of this as regularly as possible? I remember playing this game and getting the mandatory “kill tons of rats in a basement to prove your mettle” missions, and the game pointed out how lame it was and how overdone it is. From that second on, I was hooked.
Add that to the fact that Cary Elwes (Princess Bride) played the lead voice and you pretty much have a game that had me at hello.
Portal is just one of those games that manages to make you think and make you laugh and keep you entertained, all at once. I remember hearing about Portal 2 and thinking there is no way it can top the laughs of the first game (and I could not have been more wrong).
Consistently good writing, consistently good voice acting, and consistently good gameplay. The Portal series really is a fluke in all senses. To get one game that good and funny is rare, but to get 2 is a fucking gift from the heavens. And by heavens I mean the great minds at Arpeture Science.
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Could this be called the funniest game ever made, beginning to end? Yes, it might be. From having to do mini-games where you anally probe Stan’s dad to performing an abortion and then having to fight a Kardashian abortion zombie fetus, this game may not be politically correct (and yes, there is a level inside slave’s asshole), but you would have to have no soul to not spend the entirety of the playthrough in tears from the insanity you were witnessing (and taking part in).
Yes, I did just say you perform an abortion in this game, but don’t worry. It is also on Stan’s dad. Just be careful not to suck his balls off with the vacuum. That shit is nasty.
Come on. You knew at least one Rockstar game had to make it, and though Bully was close, GTA V is a laugh-riot, if that laugh-riot was written by Quentin Tarantino. Mainly, when talking about laughs and funniest moments in GTA V, you know I am talking about Trevor. Yes, he was a scary-ass sociopath. Yes, he was maniacal and sick. And yes, he was fucking awesome.
But he was also the voice of the subconscious that lives inside every one of us and just wants to call everyone out for being retarded and then stomp their skulls in and fuck their moms.
Real talk, bitches. Deal with it.
Katamari Damacy Series
Okay, note how every single entry on the list has a different style of humor in it. Bard’s Tale is self aware. Portal is British and intellectual humor. South Park was toilet humor and satire. GTA V was dark humor, toilet humor, and satire. And Katamari Damacy is just batshit insane. Straight up. All these games make you laugh for very different reasons.
But Katamari makes you laugh because it makes you feel like you just ate 20 hits of LSD and joined the fucking Village People reunion tour. Katamari Damacy is like going to bed and waking up high as fuck inside a rainbow filled with dogs that were barking your favorite song.
In other words, be on drugs when you play this game.
