5 Nerdy Podcasts You Should Subscribe To
There’s nothing like a good podcast to listen to when you’re stuck in heavy traffic during your commute to work (or from work). If you take the train, a 40-minute or so podcast will also keep boredom at bay while drowning out the surrounding noise.
I have to admit, though, that podcasts are not for everyone. There are just too many different kinds of media to keep one entertained. However, if you want to expand your horizons, I suggest that you give these nerdy podcasts a try.
They’re all informative – thus feeding your appetite for knowledge – and some will tickle your funny bone.
1. This American Life
This American Life is easily one of the most popular podcasts in the United States, although you may not hear about it much when people talk about “nerdy podcasts”. There is no doubt in my mind, though, that any kind of nerd will enjoy listening to episodes of this podcast. It covers a wide array of topics, mostly based on true stories. What I like about This American Life is how they approach the particular theme for each podcast and how their narrative – combined with opinions and interviews – doesn’t bore you at any moment.

2. Book Riot – The Podcast
Book Riot is an awesome site for book nerds, and if you think that the books are always better than the movies, you’ll fit right in. Their podcast, Book Riot – The Podcast, should be a priority if you are always on the look out for new book recommendations (good ones, that is). But there’s more to the podcast than that. The hosts – Jeff O’Neal and Rebecca Schinsky – are editors of the site, and they also talk about technology related to books and reading, research on the effects of reading, and a whole lot more. Oh, and they’ve got a wicked sense of humor, too.

Radiolab is produced by New York City public radio station WNYC. The show tackles a wide range of topics, mainly falling under the categories of science and philosophy. While the topics are serious by nature, the hosts are quite good at approaching them in a rather lighthearted manner, making the show accessible to anyone who has the inclination to learn. From “social engineers” to how American football is a touchstone of American identity to pedantry – the themes of Radiolab will give you a nerdgasm.
4. Stuff You Should Know
Okay, so HowStuffWorks.com is not exactly your go-to site when your knowledge meter needs filling up. Don’t let that get in the way of giving Stuff You Should Know a try.
From innocuous things like Play-Doh to more serious matters like ebola to the metaphysical – you’ll learn quite a few things from this podcast.
5. Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!
This one’s for trivia quiz enthusiasts. If you can’t make it to your regular quiz night, then just make sure you’ve got the latest episode of Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! on your phone. The hosts are some of the brightest and hilarious minds in the entertainment and news industry, and you will find yourself laughing all throughout each episode. But yes, your knowledge will be tested as well.
