6 Video Game Bosses Who Haunt Our Nightmares

Video game bosses can be some of the most memorable parts of video games. There is just something awesome about falling lumbering beasts after hours of struggling to make it to them in the first place. And often, based on size and might alone, your chances of survival always seem slim.
But there are some bosses who are so twisted and vile, you remember them long after you whoop them into submission. Here are 6 terrifying video game bosses that still visit us in our nightmares. Please note, all bosses from the Souls’ series could be here, but they deserve their own list. Careful as some of the bosses on the list are a wee bit NSFW.
Giygas from Earthbound
Earthbound was such a cute and sweet N.E.S RPG. That is, until you reached the final boss. Suddenly, the game goes from cute and safe to soul-ruining. Many say it looks like a fetus, and some see a demon face. The best of us see both and considering the game it is in, it is one of those things that just haunts you forever. No, really.
The craziest thing is, the story BEHIND Giygas is even more insane. The creator of the game mistakenly walked into a movie theater playing a snuff film as a child, and was deeply scarred by what he saw. His idea then, was to pass that curse on to everyone who played his game (and it worked).
Cleopatra from Dante’s Inferno
Okay, the truth is, Dante’s Inferno game was FILLED with insane and nasty imagery and bosses that many of us are affected by. While many reference other bosses, I will always go with Cleopatra from the third level. Why? She pukes from her nipples. Read that again if you have to process it.
On top of that, she insults your girlfriend who just killed herself, and that’s not cool.
The Great and Mighty Poo from Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Yes, a singing pile of sh*t with pieces of corn in it is funny, it could also be said a singing pile of sh*t with corn in it is not something you ever forget. Again, we can reference the whole game for unique and oft inappropriate boss fights, but let’s be real here. NO ONE expected to fight a singing pile of sh*t in a Nintendo game. That is still pretty shocking.
Okay, and honestly, still pretty funny.
Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2
Yes, get used to this. I will talk about Silent Hill 2 a lot on my lists. Why? Because it is one of the greatest narratives and greatest plot twists ever committed to a video game. First time you see this dude he is sexually assaulting mannequin legs. That really sets the tone for the rest of your encounters.
The worst part being, he keeps killing your already dead wife’s doppelganger in front of you. The best part is, he IS you. Sorry, but if you haven’t played this game yet, you must have been in a coma. That is some soul ruining stuff, especially for a video game boss fight. Yes, Pyramid Head has been brought back in other sequels, but not to the effect he had when we first met him/it/us.
Nihilanth from Half Life
Half Life was a game that left many of us shocked at just how scary it was (for the time). It was an incredibly tense game with scares galore, but there was something so Cthulhu and damning about the final boss. In many ways, it almost looked like how I imagined a 3D Giygas would look. A weird, baby looking alien that looks like it was spawned from the loins of the deepest reaches of space.
We may see and play this boss fight now and realize it lacks the impact it once had, but when you first played Half Life, it was mind blowing and quite startling.
Lisa Trevor from Resident Evil Remake
Not sure how many of you experienced this subplot in the HD remake of Resident Evil, but if you missed it, you missed out on an incredibly sad subplot. Can I even call this a boss fight? Yes and no, but it makes it here anyway for the fear and sadness you feel once the story reveals itself.
Lisa is, basically, the result of years and years of lab testing since she was a teenager. Any boss that asks you to kill her SHOULD be something that always sticks with you as far as video game boss fights. Poor Lisa. A wonderfully tragic note to end this list on.
