A Newsvine Review
I have been in the Newsvine beta for a few months now, and thought I would write up a quick review for those that haven’t seen/used it yet. As a news site, it is a great resource. It has become my defacto online news source, easily beating out CNN and other big news sites. It pulls news from the APWire, but also has a “vine” that users can seed their own news to and (as of a few days ago) seed that news to the region they are from. I have already seeded three articles to the Birmingham region.
In addition to news, you can also seed links to Newsvine, similar to Digg. You can comment on the link itself, and others can comment as well as vote for the link. The links with the higher votes in each section get more face-time on the main page. They also select Featured Writers, however I am not sure if this is just a totally random thing right now or if there is a science to it. You can also “watch” other people’s Newsvine pages (as well as regional pages) to see when they write up a post or seed a link.
With 30,000+ people in the beta so far, the site seems to be handling the load well. I have not experienced any slowdown, although there has been a smattering of comments from some users to that effect.
If anyone is not using Newsvine and would like to try it out, leave a comment and I will send invites to the first 5 people. You have to put a valid e-mail address in the comment form (the e-mail field) for me to be able to send you the invite.
