Amazing Typewriter Art

Just the other night, a friend remarked that she missed using the typewriter. While I can say that I miss the clickety-clack of the metal parts hitting the cylinder, the typewriter doesn’t really come anywhere near the modern machines we take for granted these days. But did you ever think of using the typewriter to create works of art?

I stumbled upon Keira Rathbone’s work today, and it really is amazing how she is using vintage typewriters to create moving pieces of art. ((Keira Rathbone’s web site)) Obviously, the artist is limited by the characters found in the typewriter. Using symbols, letters, and numbers, Keira can create various artwork – from portraits to landscapes. Here’s a sample of what she has created.   ((Source: Keira Rathbone’s Facebook))

I can’t make out most of the characters used but I know that I wouldn’t have been able to imagine “drawing” something like this using a typewriter.

For some reason, I feel a sense of poignancy emanating from this piece.  Who would have thought that mere typewriter characters can get emotions across?  The eyes are amazing!

The caption for this image reads “Miss Moss”.

Now I don’t need to say more about this image, do I?  I wonder, though, if letters other than “B” and “K” would have work as well for the background in the upper left part.

This is the artist at work.  Hats off, Miss Rathbone!
