Anime Expo 2017 - FLCL 2 and 3 Panel Talks New Characters, The Pillows, and Nudity?

It’s been 17 years since FLCL exploded in Japan and eventually crept its way to the US via Cartoon Network’s Toonami and Adult Swim programming, but now they’re back with 2 new seasons. They teased us last year at Anime Expo 2016 with the return of the Pillows providing the soundtrack (as if anyone else could do it), but this year, they upped the ante with a full trailer and lots of hints at things to come.

Here’s Adult Swim’s official word on the upcoming seasons:

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

The official FLCL 2 and 3 panel, hosted by Maki Terashima-Furuta of Production I.G., Maki, along with the president of production at Production I.G., Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, and Adult Swim’s Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin fought the urge to divulge too much to the room packed with hardcore FLCL fans. In the 13 minute recording linked below, they gave us insight into what we can expect from the two new seasons, from new characters to new Pillows music and maybe even some nudity. Even here in America. We’ll see.

Watch for seasons 2 and 3 of FLCL (“Fooly Cooly” if you didn’t know by now) to premiere sometime in 2018 at the latest, with 6 episodes each. If we haven’t seen them by next July, I’m sure we’ll all meet again at Anime Expo 2018 to hash things out.
