Apple updates iBooks, new G5 model

Apple today announced updates to its iBook and G5 lines.

The new iBook setups are as follows:

* 12 inch 1.2ghz G4, 30gb hard drive, combo drive – $999.00
* 14 inch 1.33ghz G4, 60gb hard drive, combo drive – $1,299.00
* 14 inch 1.33ghz G4, 60gb hard drive, super drive – $1,499.00

They also announced a single 1.8ghz G5 PowerMac for $1,499.00. I assume because of complaints that some people didn’t have a use for dual processors and didn’t want to pay for it. I know I heard complaints of that from a few of my friends, and I’m sure others felt similarly. Inexplicably however, that machine still comes with 256mb of RAM which is just crazy. That is the bare minimum needed to run OSX, and I can’t believe they are selling computers with so little RAM. If you get a G5, upgrade it to at the very least 512mb of RAM, ideally put in at least a gigabyte. Your mac will thank you for it later.

The Apple “refurb store”:http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71902/wo/CH2bUQBEZGe82JLK8sD1ggflYdB/3.0.9.1.0.6.61.0.0.0.0.0.0.3.1.1.0?96,112 is also fully stocked, with a lot of refurbished Powerbooks and G5’s. Buy quick though, things never last long in there. I bought my Dual G5 from the refurbished store, and it has been great. It’s covered by the same warranty as a new machine, so it’s a great way to save a few hundred bucks on your machine.
