Asus to Manufacture Widescreen MacBook

Apple is reportedly outsourcing the manufacture its first Intel-based consumer-oriented notebook line to Asus, for release this June. The upcoming MacBook is rumoured to have a 13.3-inch wide-screen display–something new to Apple notebooks–and is likely to replace the current 14-inch iBook.

The MacBook Pro, the better-endowed brother (or sister) of the upcoming MacBook, was anounced and released earlier this year, and was among the first Apple computers sold to the public that were powered by Intel processors (aside from the new iMac). Touted to be four times faster than the PowerPC-based G4 PowerBooks, the MacBook Pro was likewise lauded for its slightly smaller size (as compared to the 15″ PowerBook) and supposedly more efficient power management, among other enhancements. Apple fans weren’t too happy with the absence of some features previously standard with Apple notebooks, though, such as the FireWire 800 port.

Will the MacBook prove to be a formidable upgrade to the existing PowerPC-based iBooks?
