Black Rock Shooter: The Game

By Nopy

The growth of Black Rock Shooter as a franchise should be an inspiration to any artist hoping to make it big. It started out as an original character design by the artist huke, and it was later used as the basis for a song by the group Supercell. That led to several music videos and Black Rock Shooter eventually ended up with its own anime, produced by the studio Ordet.

While it really is something for a single illustration to lead up to an anime, it has the problem of not having a set storyline. The anime tried to put something together, but the general consensus was that it was lacking in any depth, only appealing to fans by showing Japanese schoolgirls and some nice animation. Fans of BRS are in for a treat, however, if the opening of the BRS game is any indication.

Black Rock Shooter: The Game is set to be released on August 25, 2011 in Japan for the PSP. The game is an RPG being developed by Imageepoch and the cut-scenes are being animated by Ufotable. Thankfully, the game will not have anything to do with the anime, as the game developers have come up with their own story. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future where aliens now control the world. Judging from the opening video, it mainly takes place in the ruins of New York City and to the relief of many fans, there doesn’t appear to be any schoolgirls frolicking around, just pure shoot ‘em up action.

Included with special editions of the game will be a nendoroid and figma of Black Rock Shooter’s rival, White Rock Shooter. At this point it’s unknown whether the North American and European releases will also get these extras, but I’m sure many people would be itching to get their hands on them.
