Time for another giveaway!
Batman fans, DIY fans, and collectors in general, this is one giveaway that will add some more cheer to your Christmas. We’re giving away a cardboard comic book cover of Batman 9 (1942) PLUS a Cardboard Bible DIY Book, courtesy of Homemade Game Guru.
The creative brains behind Homemade Game Guru is L.A. Nuwame, who is one of us. His passion is making handmade cardboard upcycling ideas and inventions – from treadmills, swimming pools, lamps and house-sized standees, and of course, comic book covers.
Cardboard and comic book covers? Yes, please.
L.A. is a HUGE comic book fanatic and for him, comic book covers are one of the best forms of pop culture artistic expression. He started making these 3D hand-cut cardboard covers to honor some of the most famous characters and comic book covers ever produced.
The first cover he made was the first appearance of She-Hulk in She-Hulk #1 – his favorite female superhero. Since then, he has made Batman Adventures #12 (1st Harley Quinn), New Mutants #98 (1st Deadpool), and Action Comics #1 (1st Superman).
Each cover is roughly 235% larger than the original cover. The process involves making a clean and detailed poster-sized print of the cover, backing that image onto Bristol board to strengthen it, carefully cutting out each character and logo meant to stick out, tracing each cut-out onto cardboard, and gluing each cut-out onto their respective cardboard tracings. Once the glue dries and a string is attached on the backside, the works are ready for wall display. No laser cutting involved – just two hands, a knife and lots of patience.
Here’s another piece of his awesome work.
If you like what you see, L.A. takes requests to make custom covers. Inquiries can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or through his ETSY page.
Going one step further, L.A. has created a self-published DIY craft book titled The Cardboard Bible. This book showcases how to make never-before-featured inventions anyone can make out of cardboard. From a transforming sword with unlimited mix-and-match possibilities to a Foosball table, you will never see scrap cardboard the same way again!
Aside from the Etsy page, you can find L.A. and his work on Facebook and Makezine Blog. And, to make things even more interesting, check out this video.
