Since 2003, March 25 has been celebrated as Tolkien Reading Day. Thanks to the Tolkien Society, this geek holiday has become a regular part of fans of the iconic writer.
The goal behind the inception of Tolkien Reading Day doesn’t need much explanation – it’s a special day to commemorate and promote the works of J.R.R Tolkien.
In case you’re wondering why March 25 is the designated day, this is the day of the downfall of Sauron and Barad-dûr. If that’s not a reason to celebrate, then I don’t know what is!
So, how do you do celebrate Tolkien Reading Day?
It’s really pretty much up to you, but here are a few ways to celebrate Tolkien Reading Day (which is tomorrow).
That’s the most obvious thing, right? The Lord of the Rings is the first thing that comes to most people’s minds when J.R.R. Tolkien is mentioned, and if you’re like us, you can’t get enough of it. The best thing to do is to re-read your favorite passages. You can even hold a reading party, with people reading their own selections.
There is, however, more to Tolkien than LoTR.
If you haven’t gotten past the usual suspects, take a look at The Tolkien Library to discover his other work.
Discover events in your area.
If you want to meet like-minded people face-to-face in your area, look for Tolkien Reading Day events. Unfortunately, we can’t give you a list of all these events as they are happening all over the world, and not only on the 25th.
For example, if you’re in Israel, you can join the picnic and reading session that’s going to be held in Tel-Aviv on the 27th. Visit this Facebook page for details.
If you’re in LA, then join fellow fans at The Last Bookstore in Downtown LA on March 28 from 1:30 PM to 4:15 PM. This year’s theme is “Friendship”. Visit their Facebook page for more details.
Other events by the Tolkien Society, which go beyond this geek holiday can be found here.
Take it to Twitter.
Whether you are hosting an event, attending one, or simply enjoying a good day of reading by yourself, don’t forget to go on social media to highlight this special day.
Use the hashtag #TolkienReadingDay to share what you’re reading.
We just discovered this giveaway being run by DABCC, a website which provides IT professionals with virtualization and cloud computing resources. Now, I am not too sure where the connection is, but there are probably tons of Tolkien fans within the company, so they are running this pretty cool giveaway.
You can win one of two prizes:
- Lord of the Rings custom caricature image of yourself
- Collectors Book
Check out the giveaway here.
We’ll end today’s post here, to give you time to plan what you’re going to do in the next several days to celebrate one of our favorite authors.
Do check in tomorrow, though, as we have some more Tolkien goodness for you.
