DC Superheroes Go All Mortal Kombat
The creators of Mortal Kombat have set their sights on the DC Comics universe, and they’re taking no prisoners. The result is Injustice: Gods Among Us, a brand new PvP fighting game that stars all of DC’s most popular characters.
There are three things you’ll want to notice when you watch the trailer above. First, NetherRealm Studios, which is crafting the game for Warner Bros. Interactive, appears to be working hard to incorporate an original story into their new game. Second, the heroes aren’t just fighting villains — they’re fighting other heroes, too. And third, gamers hoping for classic DC outfits are gonna be disappointed; these heroes (and villains) are sporting their overhauled looks from DC’s “New 52.”
The idea of the Mortal Kombat creators being given license to play in a universe as big and diverse as DC is a compelling one all by itself. So I’m not sure why they felt the need to make sense of all the fighting by couching it inside a story. Most fighting games don’t bother with storylines, because linear progression isn’t required in match-up fights. But even more to the point… Doesn’t every comic book conversation between two superheroes end with the two of them coming to blows? I mean, seriously. Heroes fight one another these days more than they fight the bad guys. The developers don’t need some big story reason to get away with Superman fighting the Flash. Isn’t this how superheroes decide where to go for lunch?
Anyway, reeling it back in…
Injustice: Gods Among Us is in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U for a 2013 release. Characters confirmed to be playable in the game include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn, and Solomon Grundy. But you can bet that that’s just the first batch of characters with plenty more to come. I expect we’ll find out a lot more about the game at E3 next week.
