Star Wars is coming back to theaters next year — and this time it’s in 3D. But Lucasfilm is using the questionable strategy of starting with The Phantom Menace, easily the most reviled chapter in the saga. Here’s a new trailer for the 3D version of Episode I.
Conspicuously absent from this trailer for the re-release of The Phantom Menace in 3D is Jar-Jar Binks, the most hated character in the Star Wars saga. Does George think that if he doesn’t mention the offensive Gungan that we’ll forget about him? He’s not that naïve, he can’t be.
But the choice to focus on the more grown-up aspects of the story (Jake Lloyd’s terrible acting notwithstanding) is hard to miss. Darth Maul features prominently, and there’s a big emphasis on the Jedi battles and flights through space. Of course, seeing a 2D trailer for something that’s in 3D kind of makes the whole thing moot. But it’s an interesting reminder of what else is in the movie besides Jar-Jar, for those who haven’t watched the movie in a while.
Can 3D make The Phantom Menace a more enjoyable movie to watch? I mean, if there’s one thing this movie has going for it, it’s all the eye candy. Every frame of the film is filled to the brim with tons of visual details, so seeing how Lucasfilm separates those elements to give them depth holds a certain technical appeal. The story itself isn’t really that bad, but it’s told in such a clunky way that it’s just hard to watch sometimes.
So what do you think? Will you hit the 3D theater when Star Wars returns? Come talk about it with us.
