E3 2012: The Last of Us

The game developer that brought you the Uncharted series had a great showing at E3 with its latest title: The Last of Us. This post-apocalyptic story of survival features incredible A.I. and brutal, realistic gun play and hand-to-hand smackdowns.

The Last of Us, from Naughty Dog games, is set twenty years after a pandemic has infected most of mankind, transforming them into monstrous creatures. The few remaining survivors are forced to scrounge for food, weapons, and other supplies, often putting them into one another’s crosshairs. Players are thrust into this unforgiving world as a survivor named Joel who knows how to take care of himself. But Joel’s life is complicated considerably when he’s hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie across a United States that’s been reclaimed by nature.

The real core of the game is the relationship between Ellie — who’s 100% powered by the game — and Joel, who has his own dialogue and reactions that are determined by choices the player makes. The natural quality of their back-and-forth, of how they look after one another and interact, is said to not be dependent on cut-scenes. Play through a level/scene more than once, and small choices you make along the way will result in completely different reactions, conversations, and outcomes between the two of them.

Like the Uncharted games, The Last of Us is a PS3 exclusive.
