E3: Ubisoft Brings Assassin's Creed & Ghost Recon

Oh, Ubisoft. You make such fantastic games. Why must you always have the cheesiest E3 media event? At least the last few years with Joel McHale hosting had some genuinely funny moments. But this year’s event, hosted by Aaron Priceman, aka Ubisoft’s “Caffiene Man,” was just painful to watch. It should be used in classrooms as a textbook example of “how to get an audience to turn on you.”

At least they showed some great games.

Ubisoft made its audience sit through their entire show just to see the main event: Assassin’s Creed Revelations. But I’m not going to make you wait that long, because this demo (embedded above) was precisely the kind of jaw-dropping moment you go to E3 for. I can’t bring myself to spoil it for you — it’s way too awesome. Just watch it (and I apologize in advance for Mr. Priceman’s inanity at the beginning). Then watch the killer new CGI trailer below.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations brings us to the conclusion of Ezzio’s story — the tale that began in Assassin’s Creed II, and continued in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. In the new game, Ezzio tracks the history of his ancestor Altaïr, allowing players to take on the roles of both characters, as well as the ongoing story of Desmond Miles in the present day. (Side note: why do most of these fully-CGI game trailers — the kind shown in support of the triple-A games at E3 — look so much better and more realistic than those big-budget Hollywood all-CGI films like Polar Express and Beowulf?) Seriously, this trailer just knocks it out of the park.

The long-delayed Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is looking better by the minute. Just watching a few seconds of the game shows that it’s gone through a major overhaul since it was first announced — much like its cousin Splinter Cell: Conviction did. And similarly, this game is a whole new beast. The trailer is one big “wow” moment in and of itself, but the Kinect operability shown at the Xbox event added another layer of shock and awe. This one really stunned me with just how good it looks.

Far Cry 3 was announced with this 7-minute trailer (which is very NSFW), where a new protagonist is lost on a mysterious island, searching for his girlfriend, and trying to merely survive the dangers of both this harsh environment and the other people he encounters there. (The way the story was initially described reminded me a bit of the new Tomb Raider.) The developer told the audience that Far Cry 3 was “the surprise of the show.” Isn’t that like calling it a “well-reviewed game” before a single reviewer has gotten their hands on it?

A new entry in the Brothers in Arms series was announced, but this one is unlike anything the franchise has done before. It’s called Furious 4, and it stars a crew of misfits who specialize in bringing the hurt down on Nazis — Inglorious Basterds style.

I have no idea what From Dust is, but it looks fairly epic, no?

Here are a few other highlights from the show. Enjoy.
