Final Fantasy XIV, Attempt #2

Almost two years ago, Square Enix released its MMO game Final Fantasy XIV — to the resounding applause of no one. Now, a completely overhauled, remade-from-scratch FFXIV has been announced. Will it make players forget the original version?

Officially titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the new game is an attempt by Square Enix to deliver on the promise of what the original game was supposed to be. The updated game uses an all-new graphics engine, a redesigned interface and maps, new server and data structures, and loads of entirely new content. This is no expansion of the original title. This is an all-out replacement.

Square Enix says that the new version of the game “centers on the core concept of rebirth, featuring a new world to explore and storyline to experience.” Even more musical to fans’ ears: with this new iteration, FFXIV is finally coming to PlayStation 3, in addition to the existing PC version. No release date has been announced for either version.

A new CGI trailer for the game is embedded above. Check out finalfantasyxiv.com for the latest information.
