Less than a week after their introduction, there are already some reports cropping up that the “protective coating” on the black MacBook is easily flaking off after relatively light use.
Some users report that the matte black coating on their new MacBook is rather fragile and has begun peeling and flaking off leaving the undercoat exposed. We are not sure yet if the problem is widespread or only occurring on a limited number of black MacBooks but we are looking in to it. Some users may remember that Apple had a similar problem with the black iPod nano being scratch prone. Apple addressed that problem by adding a small lip around the edge of the nano to protect the face of the device.
Would adding a shiny protective coat, rather than the flat black that is being used, have helped this? I haven’t had much experience with the black MacBook so I can’t speak to the quality of the coating or the surface texture.
