Girl Power: Heroines that kick serious ass

There is a saying that “behind every great man is a great woman.” Personally, we’d like to throw that expression out the door as we list down several current superheroines who stand on their own two feet and are just as bad-ass as any dude.

From Lynda Carter to Gal Gadot, we will always love Princess Diana

Wonder Woman

Any conversation about superheroines won’t be complete with the first of them all. The Amazon Princess has come a long way from her pre-World War II origins and with Fast & Furious actress Gal Gadot recently being cast to wear the tiara and magic bracelets, don’t be surprised if Princess Diana of Themyscira becomes even more ubiquitous. Recently enjoying a revival under the able supervision of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Cliff Chiang, it’s finally cool again to love Wonder Woman.

It takes a rare and confident lady to rock a mohawk with confidence

She was once worshipped as a goddess. Let that last statement sink in. On top of that distinction, Ororo Munroe has proven time and again to be a capable leader of the combustible personalities that comprise the X-Men. By once being married to the Black Panther and currently being in a relationship with Wolverine, this former pickpocket with weather manipulating abilities has been more than capable in dealing with difficult and stubborn men who would try to tame the goddess.

Whatever the outfit, Catwoman proves there’s more than one way to skin a cat

Straddling the line between hero and villain for so long, nobody will deny that Selina Kyle has been a compelling personality in her many lives. Writers over the decades have made her a cat burglar, a reformed prostitute, a sex kitten, and on some occasions, even Mrs. Bruce Wayne. With or without Batman, however, Catwoman has never been shy about using what she’s been given to get what she wants. Meow.

The codenames have changed over the years but Carol Danvers has finally become one of comics’ heavy hitters

Captain Marvel

She’s been Ms. Marvel, Binary, Warbird, and finally, Captain Marvel. She’s been a US Air Force officer, had alien Kree genes merged with her own, gained and lost cosmic abilities, and survived being an alcoholic. Through all of these, Carol Danvers has emerged as a premiere hero in her own right, no longer just a female version of a male icon. It’s taken a while, but Carol is truly her own superhero now.

Natasha Romanova’s exploits made the Cold War a whole lot hotter

Black Widow

A product of the cloak and dagger espionage era of the Cold War, Natalia “Natasha” Romanova was trained and given enhanced abilities in Russia’s “Red Room.” Eventually defecting to the US, the Black Widow has worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as an Avenger, showing off her superhuman athleticism, “Widow’s Bite,” and enhanced genes. In times that the government or the Avengers meet situations that need to be resolved in the shadows or in secret, that’s when the Black Widow is at her best.

Elektra is far from your stereotypical stealthy Japanese ninja

Trained to be an assassin by the mystical ninja organization known as The Hand, Elektra Natchios has been killed and resurrected a few times, and even replaced by an alien Skrull. She’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with Daredevil while also working for Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. once to stop Wolverine from going on a killing spree. A master of martial arts and an Olympic-level athlete, she has an extremely high tolerance for pain and has time and again shown herself to be near-unkillable.

Let’s see you survive being shot by the Joker and still kick ass like Batgirl can

The nerdy daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, Barbara Gordon could have been satisfied with a career as a librarian. Instead, inspired by the Batman’s exploits, she designed her own costume and embarked on her own adventures as Batgirl. This redhead has been through a lot, including being shot and paralyzed by the Joker and subsequently being a superhero information resource known as “Oracle.” Now firmly entrenched once more in her yellow boots and cowl, Barbara is back on Gotham’s rooftops dispensing her brand of justice.

Her background as a member of the NYPD made Sara Pezzini ready to bear the honor of the Witchblade

As if being a female New York City homicide detective isn’t tough enough, try having an ancient supernatural artifact bond itself to your hand. This has been the fate of Sara Pezzini since the sentient Witchblade found her. It’s no small responsibility as the weapon has found several hosts over the centuries, thus even after Sara gave up the Witchblade to Danielle Baptiste, and even after Sara gave birth, it still found its way back to her avenging arms.
